Any tips/pointers for the most unprepared cat taker at the 11th hour - 14-09-2004, 03:06 PM

Hi all,
I am working in IT for the past 10 months, took CAT 2003 [both times] without intending to prepare for it. I really got to start prep for 2004 cat only now. i know there is hardly 69 days to go.
so any of you Pundits have any advice for me on at least giving it a good shot?
I work 5 days a week till 8 at night. I got 89 percentile in Verbal and Reasoning both in the previous CAT, but I am terrible at quants especially in number systems and fractions, I lose a lot there. I have IMS study material and some time tests.
If there are any others sailing in the same leaky boat, please come forward and we may be able to help each other. those who are prepared and confidant, please take time off to help the under-privileged, namely me and others if they join me.
This does wonders to my sense of self-loathing.but i will go ahead and say 'SOS'

Pls go easy on the font & color - Simba

After straining my eyes a lot for reading ur post. Herez my take.

69 days are not less to crack CAT. At a level its just a test of ur aptitude.People have cracked CAT with just 2 months of prep.

In general, time only comes into consideration after u r able to determine where u stand as of now....wot is ur current aptitude in terms of Quant and Verbal.....
If u r one of those who's good in basic mathematics and English grammar then it may not b late......
If a sound and strong foundation is there then surely a fort can b built....but If u r looking to build a foundation now then it may b too late.....

From wot u have written abt urself....One advantage that u have is that u have already been there and done that ( twice that too)....
So I guess it isnt late for u...just concentrate on ur strengths get the basics right.....and leave the rest in the hands of the almighty. All the best ....Just Go for it

The best reply to ur query comes from the most right, experienced person to answer you... a student from IIM Calcatta in his thread "Myths and facts...telling from personal experience...Hope it helps...."

You can check the whole thread at the link http://www.pagalguy.com/cat/viewtopic.php?t=5090

For ur ref his qoute on ur query is as follows:-

Quote:
Hi All!

I have received quite a few mails asking doubts and queries regd. CAT and I am addressing here those issues which are a concern for majority of the people.......One such query is regarding whether 2 months are good enough for CAT preparation...........and how to go abt preparing for CAT in the next 2 months....

Here are the answers:
For working people, 2 months are good enough for preparing for CAT.....but u
need to take at least 2-3 hrs daily out of ur work for studies and probably
put in more in the weekends........as much as possible...Also, try taking leave from work before CAT say a couple of weeks/month.....on any fictitious grounds........I don't need to elaborate..... For those still in graduation or droppers, the more hours u put in , the better...........

If possible, join some coaching classes..and take the material of IMS/Career Launcher and finish the Basic Reference material in the next 15-20 days...Join a fast track 2 months coaching course if time permits........That way u get to interact with other aspirants and this will help u understand where u stand as of now in comparison to others....So, u can work ur way up from there....

also join a test series and try and analyse where are u going wrong and why...test analysis is very imp. ...scores will improve over time......try out different strategies in the next one month ..experiment while u still can.....and see what works best for u ....

Don't get disappointed by ur score in one Mock CAT.... u need to develop a strategy of attempting the paper and adhering to sectional time limits...and u need to take at least 5-7 more tests before u can compare urself to the other aspirants...Believe me, it is not that difficult......A month before CAT , freeze ur strategies...and focus on improving accuracy and speed..........From Oct onwards, try to get in the top 100-200 amongst test takers all over India....

But get serious! Competition is tough...Anything below 99%ile is just not good
enough...Start now......or it might be too late......U need to have that killer instinct....Everything else can wait.....

I can assure u that it is very much possible but u have to make these 2 months
count.........

So, what are u waiting for?Get started!

The woods are lovely, dark and deep....
But I have promises to keep....
And miles to go before I sleep.........

All the best!

Regds,
Ambuj Garg
