Hi All,
Its really nice that so many people are coming forward with encouragement and tips.
I thank nilmitr and everyone for their input. I post a sort of solution today, as opposed to the questions that i usually post, about DI.
the important points are:
1] brush up your percentages and fractions. increase your mental calculation speed.
2] check out the questions for the figure, each graph will have atleast 1 among say 5 others which can be answered by just looking at the graph and not having to do any calculations. Dont dismiss any graphs just because they 'look' complex.
3] dig up your 8th-10th std math books and work out each and very graph related problem there in steps. that way the approach will be ingrained in your head.
lastly, this tip is to be used only on D-Day, that too only if you are still not happy with your DI:
do the reasoning and logical questions first [ if that is something you are better at]
once you are less tense and can see and approximate the values represented by bars and sectors clearly [ that knack can come only from practice] then start following tip 2.

These tips are the ones I got, which I am sharing, for I have the same problem. DI+Quants =
lets hope it becomes better soon
best of luck everyone
Ramya/Niobe

About DI most important thing is The Ability to analyse and calculate FAST.

So start with practicing tables.Make ur percentage calculations PERFECT. Use some fundas like 14.28% of something is nothing but that something divided by 7.

It's all about only one thing friends:

Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice and Practice!!!

And keep the spirits UP champs!!!

hi sutopa,
hi sutopa spend two complete days on tables(till 30*30), sqaures till 30 and calculation of percentages...i am sure this would help your DI a great deal...and solve as many previous cat papers as possible...

dear querier,

* * * * * * * * * First of all let me tell you that I am not an expert at CATology but what I have experienced in the last CAT has taught me some things.I don't agree with the person who said that you should try to take a leave from work and start preparing for CAT. Aree yar CAT itself is a test of Time Management and skill and a lot of such intricate combinations. Please don't mind the inappropriate jargons. I am a desperate CAT aspirant who also is not getting time to study because of my Software job. Still I think that you should not try taking leaves. Because if you are not able to manage *to study for this aptitude exam how can one expect you to study all the tedious and hard materials that you will have to consume while in the IIMs. So the strategy that I am going to adopt is to do my CAT study 1hr everyday from today with a predefined schedule and go without budging that schedule no matter what that might cost me. So see you buddies and do give a reply to this post no matter how bad it may be.

edit: go easy on font size.....emphasis should be made thro' post quality

I disagree to an extent.
The CAT is not a (complete) test of your management ability. It is a aptitude test which requires strong grasp of fundamentals - and ability to spot familiar problems. Now - this you will only get if you put in regular hours of practice. Remember - there are people out there - who are spending day after day - night after night - preparing for the test - you are up against them. If you are not going to be as good as the ones who are skilled in the art of picking and choosing - you are not going to stand much of a chance to get in. For this - if your fundas are not strong already - you NEED practice.

Wrong - by the same logic i've applied above. That was a very strong statement you make - "Because if you are not able to manage to study for this aptitude exam how can one expect you to study all the tedious and hard materials that you will have to consume while in the IIMs. " and the prime reason why i am replying to you.
The CAT is extremely competitive... if you want to be competetive - you may have to go to extremes - please note - i use "may" - and not "will" - meaning - if you have your fundas in place - a few days of practice and a few mocks may do bring you in - but, if otherwise - you NEED practice - and time.
Remember - you dont want to wait another year before you can get into a managment institute - just because you didn't put in enough time to practice.

Ofcourse - there may be other compulsions which you should keep in mind - sometimes it may just be impractical to take leave - but - if you can - i will suggest - you better take leave now - when you have time - work on it for a couple of weeks - and then give a few mocks to figure out your progress.
That's my doh aanaas - hope it makes sense

PS: I'm in the same boat All the best to all of us.

Hello,
I am back with a specific gripe now. how do u differentiate between a word problem to be solved by permutation and that to be solved by combination?
