I totally agree with Catullus and Ashish... I have been particularly working on it, of late. I used to attempt 15-16 questions in QA only to realize later that a lot of EASY questions didn't catch my attention...I have alloted some 10 minutes ( out of 40 minutes ) for finding these easy questions..This Mock gifted me with 22 easy questions..Hope to take it to 30 by 21st ! :P

Hey guys,
I totally agree with the theory that selection matters the most.....But do u think its a good idea to sit in an exam with such a mind frame....I mean the papers are totally unpredictable so there is no gurantee that u will get sitters in it for sure...
I totally agree that being selective is the best way to crack CAT but sitting in an exam thinking that I will b selective....is that a good thing to do?

well,

we need to be quite subjective when we define " sitters " . A Questions is a sitter for me if , the moment i read the question, i can see the entire solution in my mind. It's just a matter of putting pen to paper and getting the answer.

And if you are well prepared ( even if you are not, you have time to do so ), you will surely find 20-25 questions from the topics you are comfortable with.

Worst Case, there are no sitters ! In that case, All the Best.. !

Actually by sitters I mean the ones which u can answer just by looking and making a few mental calculations newguy......my point is that isnt it a risk to have such a mindset when u sit for the exam....cos maybe u will lose time looking for such questions when u cud use the same time to solve a few which were a lil on the tough side..

Re: Selection matters most - 14-09-2004, 04:57 PM

Hi,

I have been experimenting with selection in the last 3 AIMCATs. I feel selection is really crucial in RC, DI and LR, because here you can end up losing not only marks but precious minutes which is irretrievable, that is in case you don't select the right ones. Initially, it was kind of difficult, but with trial and error, I have zeroed in on my strengths and am able to attempt consistent number of questions. For these two sections, I take roughly about 2 minutes per section to identify good sets/passages. In my opinion, better spend a minute or two in selecting the right RC/DI set; else one might end up spending even more time on individual questions in a wrong RC/DI.

For quants, I do not keep separate time frame for selection, but rather go through one liners first and take instantaneous decisions whether or not to attempt them; I am yet to cross the cutoffs in quant. Needless to say, I am still working on quant strategy.

I don't mean to allott separate 10 mins for selecting.. I mean to say that you are actually spending 10 minutes hunting and 30 minutes devouring. Believe me, provided you fundae are OKish, you will find lots of questions which are dirt cheap! I am yet to come across a QA paper which has less than 20 " sitters" !

i think best strategy is to first attempt question of those topic in which u have good command and question which u can visualize easily [short question] it is use less to read 5-6 line question. its better to do those question if u get time at last.
cheers
