the problem with current lot of guys n gals aspiring for cat is the bandwagon effect.just becz someone has a good academic background one wants to do mba.which makes absolutely no sense.just becz one has the gift to perform well in aptitude test, does't make him a suitable candidate for mba.managerial abilities should be given equal weightage. the panaces lies in a more elaborate personality assessment tests...like the one we have in defence!!!

Thanks for the threads , Madmax. I made my observations after going through those and some others.

And your post, psychodementia, I had already read that and I even mentioned it in my post. An excellent one. What you have mentioned is the reason why most people go for MBA. But in light of your post, I wonder if it is so obvious why is this question often asked in MBA interviews. And do most people give the real reason why they want to do MBA as the reason during the interviews ? Atleast from what I say coaching institutes do not seem to encourage that.

i think only those guys should go for cat who hav real reason to do mba.then this coaching inst made up my reply scene goes out of picture.if u hav the mind that can pick up business...if business jargon fascinates you..if you hav spent evenings thinking abt dhirubhai...if u like reading gurcharandas & biography of tycoons...only then & then only aspire to be a manager

Ok.. no one's been here for about 5 months but this is what I was looking for...

I just wanted to ask people why is it that they feel Business Administration is the career they want.

For the sake of a focused discussion I'll list the obvious reasons so redundancy is reduced...
1. Money. Yes, we all love that stuff...
2. Prestige. Depends on your immediate environment... but no one really looks down upon a manager... unless you are a philosopher, in which case it hardly matters!

ok... I was under the impression that there are more obvious reasons... but none come to mind now...

Remember, the issue is Why Business Administration not Why an MBA (sorry for bad communication zango, thats what I meant in the mail... both discussions go hand in hand actually so no harm done...)

Vaibhav.

Hi

I feel Miss Deepti has reasons to be confused. I mean you cant just forget a hard earned job and think abt. MBA.

MBA more or less has become a fad among ppl right now. Not to mention the crap quality of new B schools opening up, the students even are mor crappier.I feel v shd. have at leat 2 yrs. work ex. requirement for MBA programme.

What do u say?

When you have nothin better to do,prepare for MBA.

Lets assume you are a chemical engineer. Two years into college you realize engineering is not for you, and its finance (or marketing or whatever) that excites you more. But all you get out of college is a B.Tech degree which will, in most cases, not fetch you the kind of job in finance you want to pursue, such as I-banking for example. An MBA in Finance could help.

This is just one of the many reasons. Which is basically a rephrasal of "I want a job in Finance so that I can earn Rs. 2,000,000 p.a" or "I want to enhance my skill-set so that I can advance in my career and earn thrice as I currently do". What was that cliche...Its all about money, honey

Remember an MBA is just two (sometimes one) years of your life and hence it can never be an end in itself but a means to an end. Whatever the reason you go in for an MBA, as long as you dont regret your decision later on, you should be fine. Be open to the fact that you might end up never making any use of your MBA education.

Ok... so someone can be interested in Finance, for which an MBA is one of the few PG courses available...
But my question was why do you like Finance (or Marketing, or any other streams in an MBA)...

I only decided on an MBA after I started working... business management has the same appeal to me as some people have for writing or theatre... it requires rational and yet innovative thinking...

I wanted to know if others feel this way or what other attributes of an MBA (in the sense of a career in management) people like. I don't think most people view management as an end in itself... worthy by its nature.

Kyon takleef kar rahe ho yaar sab log. The person who wants to do the MBA is herself not sure why she wants to do it. She does not know what good can come out of it and what shud b done to get on the bandwagon..!!

Waise deepti zee, One major thing u shud consider that, WHAT DO U WANT TO END UP LIVING LIKE...??

U wanna be another person who has a nice paying job, leaves home at 8:00am and reaches back at 10:00in the night after travelling in the local trains, or say even an esteem for an instance..? or u wanna be a person who goes at 8:00am and works through the day, managing things around, and living life on the edge, in the fast lane and then come back home in a Mercedes or at least a Skoda Octavia, all contented with life..??

i know u r still contended but say u r working in XYZ company for 4 years and out of the blues, u find someone a year younger to you, as ur boss, who not only gives u orders but also is from a premier B school, howw would u like it..?? i m not saying that this is going to happen but this might just happen..!!

And that time u will start thinking, what went wrong..!! So my advice, go ahead and crack the CAT. U can have ample time to decide whether u want to go or not. But yes before u start be completely sure, y u r doing an MBA. Just bcozothers r doing it or u wanna be a manager someday too..??

Every morning i go thru Forbes list of 40 richest Indians. If my name is not in there, i go to work..!!!
