Hi Deepti,

I feel what Susie says is right; get the form now. Trust me, losing a 1000 bucks is nowhere close to losing one year that one may have to regret.

Later on, what you really need to do is sit alone somewhere and think really, really, hard about your situation. All said and done, it is perhaps going to be the momentous decision in your life. Perhaps you are just confused at the moment, or perhaps you have not taken all the facts into consideration - and hence, whatever suggestions we might give may not actually be good for you.

Do a SWOT analysis - strength, weakness, opportunities and threats - at the end of it all, whatever the decision you take, there is a great likelihood that you won't regret that decision. This decision will also give you focus that will help you prepare for the CAT in case you decide to bell the CAT or help you make the right moves and advance through your budding career should you decide otherwise.

regards,
-pooran

Dear Dipti,
Let me tell you something first.
There are no UNIVERSAL answers to PERSONAL questions.Because what may be very GOOD for me may just be HELL for you and vice versa.
So what u have to decide is what YOU have to decide and no one else can do that FOR YOU.What we can do is share some of our thoughts with you and try to enlighten the path when u think that there is DARKNESS.
So let us know what do u know abt MBA and the kind of CAREER PATH that follows after that. What is important in long terms is:-

[glow=gold:d633ec64ae][highlight=darkred:d633ec64ae]"Where DO you want to END up in your life?"[/highlight:d633ec64ae][/glow:d633ec64ae]

Just ask yourself a question before taking any such an IMPORTANT decision in ur life that WHAT is it that will make u look forward to ur job? What will you feel abt 'going to OFFICE' every morning when u get up from ur bed. Will that be "Oh no not again. Every day I do this. I need a break"?? If it is going to be this, then do not go for it.
You should feel enthusiastic towards what you will be doing rest of your life.

Do not go by MONEY,FAME,CRAZE,WHAT IS HOT or anything like that.Because whatever u decide now is going to take u upside down. You are going to invest a lot of money and time in ur MBA.So it should be WORTH it.You will not get ur DECENT salary also in these 2 yrs. After the MBA (even if u get salary in lacs) u should not feel that isse to mera pehla job hi achha tha.Nobody going to make u a programmer again(if that was what u were earlier)after an MBA from IIMA.

Enough GYAN. Life is not so SERIOUS.
But it is not to be taken CASUALLY too. All the best.
Yours,
Nilesh.

Heh! Thanks for all the responses. The point is not "ego" - it is "not-being-sure". Yeah sure - I understand its my decision. I am looking for reasons why people do an MBA and reasons why "I" should not do an MBA.

Doing an MBA sure brings in some amount of instability in career - it sure is a major distraction. Since it not seem appropriate that I bring in this instability after 3-4 years for by then I would have greater responsibilities @ work n home, I was wondering if I should do it now. But then, I dont have reasons to do it. At the same time, It might happen that I would not feel the need to do an MBA and happily program away to glory. This is the confusion.

It is on these lines - I mite want to eat a choclate in a few years but I might not get to go to a shop then. So, I buy it now and keep it. But then, I might never feel like eating it. Moreover, Right now I'm happy with what I've already bought.

Hi Deepti,
Let me introduce myself as Rajat currently working with HP.
you have not mentioned your qualification as well as nature of work.
Anyway here is simple calculation whether you should write CAT or not.
Suppose right now u r earning Rs 300000 per annum.
Now if you are going 4 top ten institutes then sum total amount that you would be spending will come around Rs 500000
Now total amount that you would spent is Rs 8ooooo + 2 years of your youthful life.
So it's you who have to decide .
i'm also facing the same dilemma.
My current salary is more than 4 lakhs. work is aslo pretty cool.
so i'm basically looking for top ten institutes only. beyond that i'm not thinking filling forms at all.
I hope this calculation will give you rough idea whether you should write CAT or not.

Thanks & Regards,

Rajat

Spot on. Older people shouldn't think about CAT

I started a thread on the topic why MBA and found it immedeately locked. After a bit of searching I found that this was the only active thread on this topic that was not yet locked.

My observations about these why MBA threads
1. Usually one person with this genuine query start this thread.
2. Lot of people rubbish the question as an often asked question and not to start new threads.
3. Some people try to joke about the question.
4. Some people try to give answers helpful to specific problem of person starting the thread.
5. Some people just say 'Introspect"
6. Some give general answers such as money, career advancement etc.
7, Some feel it is too obvious and give replies like "If you don't know this CAT is not for you"
8. Some people give very good detailed answers (Psychodementia's answer was one of the very few posts of this kind )

Regarding the question.

1.I am intrested in knowing how many people have clearly thought
out this question
2. I am sure there are many diffrenent intresting reason why people do
MBA (other than money and social status). Wanted to find what they
may be.
3. I find lot of people who have done MBA s from institutes such as IIMs
and people who are holding responsible positions in companies do not
seem to know why they did MBA or why they took up their prsent job
(except of course money, social status)
4. I think it is a very important question and all clearly thought out anwers
should be collected and maintained and would serve as a valuable
guide for people pondering over the question.
5. Clear answers on why some one decided on not going for a MBA would
also be helpful. For instance I am aware that Pagalguy decided that
MBA would not be useful to him. Still I do not know what his career
goals were and why he decided that MBA would not be useful to him.
Such information would provide much food for thought.

Suggestions to the forum:-

1. A sticky thread on this topic. Though I had seen this question discussed here and there randomly when I was a regular visitor 6 months back , I found it difficult to find the threads on this topic. I think lot of people are intrested in this topic and tend to start new threads when they can not easily find an existing one.

2. An archive containing all the good answers to these questions in the portal. Even if one finds the thread one has to go through a lot of irrealevent material before finding any good replies. There should be some easy way of easily accessing all good replies to this question.

A final word:-
I am aware that the administrator and mods in this forum are very good and need no one to tell them what needs to be done. I am defenitely not venturing to do anything of that sort. Just wanted to share my thoughts on this issue.
