Reduce the stress and crack CAT'09 -
30-08-2009, 10:05 PM
Hi all,
I was looking for the thread specifically dedicated for dealing with the issues regarding mental stress which the aspirants face during the journey of preparation.... but could not locate one ...and hence, i came up with the thread for the purpose.
Generally , during our preparation, we suffer from various issues which tend to demotivate us. These may be low scores , inconsistent performance in mocks, work pressure etc etc... and because of all this, we find preparing freely for the big day, a bit tough.
And it is rightly said that big games are won in mind and not in fields...and also many experts believe that " CAT is more about attitude rather than just aptitude".....so, lets help each other to reduce this stress so that all of us can come up with flying colors on 22 january,2010.
I request all the mods , senior puys to please provide us with GYAAN on the same and provide solutions to our problems regarding demotivating factors we face..... and help us in getting psychological edge over others to win this attitude game !!
So, start posting your queries puys and get the solution to align your attitude (by reducing mental stress) with the one required to bell the CAT with mouse!!!
PS: Dont post questions on QA/DI/VA here...already many threads are running for this purpose. This thread is meant for supporting us in builiding up the attitude especially when D-Day is not too far.

I had started the mock series on a high note(hope to end on a high note too) but my last two mock scores have gone down considerably...Though i have alwayz maintained consistency in QA, My DI n VA seem to be the pain in the neck. till now my VA was goin on ok. managing to get to the cutoff line atleast, but in the last two mocks my VA scores are below 0:( and my DI as alwayz is in single digit...
pls help me on wat i shud do and also guide me on how to coup wit the exam pressure, i dunno how to keep my cool when i am not able to do a particular question. I knw CAT is all abt TIME management and all these things but i realise tht only at the end of the exam...pls help me on this....

The key to crack DI is practice.
There is no good material available for DI. When I started my DI preparations, I used to get scores in single digit and didnt have a clue as what to do because there weren't many books that I could refer. On asking a few veterans, I came to know that practice is the only key in DI. Keep doing the same questions until you are able to do it comfortably. Other thing is to try to do as much variety as possible, once you are familiar with majority of the caselets ,you would be able to relate the new questions to some of the earlier sets that you had done. SO dont be afraid if you get a new set at your hands, take it as a learning experience and try to attempt it whole heartedly. And if you are not able to crack it, keep practicing with it until you are familiar with the approach and comfortable with it. I would again say..only practice is the key in DI.

But the point is how will someone reach this stage where he thrashes every single MOCKCAT.It is right that Getting a 99+ ptile gives you massive confidence. This confidence boosts your moral. But major hindrance is in your mind. The tension which we want to kill is itself present in our minds before we reach the stage where our solution kills it.Catch-22 .
Hence strong will is the key.Strong emotional quotient is essential.Optimism is required.Hope is the key word.Hardwork is the weapon. To reach that stage where your mind is really free from tension requires strong emotional quotient.I think this will sail us through.
Just my opinion and I am also sailing with you guys in the same boat.

I agree with you dude..... without strong will , hardwork, optimism... big goals can never be achieved.... but, i feel once we start getting good scores in initial stages, we cross the thin line between confidence and over confidence and reaching the latter side, deters our performance ....
But again, EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT is the major key.... we need to have a strong quotient to prevent ourselves from crossing the line and doing well throughout!!!
Once again, thanks buddy!!!

Re: Reduce the stress and crack CAT'09 -

One thing i feel that creates pressure on CAt takers is that they feel CAt is the only way of life... mind it...we all have dreams and we all want to get into IIMs...but that should not be our only option.... while taking CAT..we should take it as coolly and casually as playing a game. If we get stuck in one question..some tend to panic ki "mera chance gaya and lose cool and falters in other questions too." ...strictly this should not be the attitude...we should try to do one....if v cant..then leave and get along with other..
the main logic is that.....while u r in preparation stage u should think .....this is ur only goal and give it ur 100% ...but when u enter the hall to take the test u should think..u hv 100 other options..n this is just a game... and play casually....that way u r relieved from unnecessary pressure

i agree with you dude..... and in addition to what you said..
we should all think that CAT is just the beginning of exams and not the end..... after this, we have a series of exams...and all of them have some of the reputed b-schools of the country...
though our primary aim is getting into IIMs... but we should not panic to the extent that our dream goes far from us....
Just keep in mind Cat Day is the beginning...not the end!!!

Hi Puys,
Everything goes fine for me except for QA... Though I am an engineer, and quite good at Maths, somehow I am not able to solve the questions when it comes in the mocks... It simply doesn't click. I do not know where I am lagging. I consider myself to be an exceptional case where VA n DI is good but QA is pathetic. :(
Any ideas how to overcome this?
Thanks,
Mohit.
