a query on workex - 24-07-2004, 08:14 AM

hi,
I am a cat2004 aspirant
could u please tell me whether there is a big difference between a 4 month workex guy & a 6 month workex guy. Also, if work in one company for 2 months , resign & then join another co.(I have appointment letters from both the co.), will that in some way affect my prospects of getting into a good B-school?
pls help.

i doubt it. besides, i harldy think that 4 or 6 months is going to count. considering that most perople finish college around now, many are forced to work till cat, which is six months away!

hi rami,
generally a work ex of 5-12 months does not value that much
what i mean to say is that u one is considered as a fresher only if one has less than a year of ex....

ye it may count if one has some 18-24 months of ex.....

but i really doubt that less than 12 months of ex would be considered....

regarding the switching of the job.....ye there is a possibility that the panel may ask u to give the reason for changing the job
as long as u are able to justify urself....i think there would not be any problem...

take care
ATB

hey! i really dont think it will matter whether its 4 months or 6 months. but yes, some panels might be interested in knowing why u left a job in the first to months itself...

i wudnt have shown the first co's exp had i been in ur place....

there r a lot of threads on work ex, suggest u go thro them. here's one:

As far as we have seen across this forum, a GREAT CAT score cannot keep u out of IIMs.. irrespective of having 0-1-2 yrs work ex. Hope this helps.. Just give CAT ur best!!

As far as I know having work exp is considered as a positive point but not having it is NEVER a negative point.

This is because every institute in India wants to have a fair mix of work-ex n freshers or boys n gals or different academic backgrounds to have a diverse and learning culture in the organization. This helps in peer to peer learning across collegues.

So do not worry. Unless u r applying for ISB, Hyderabad, not having work-ex is not going to be against u.

Just do ur best. And have convincing justifications for all ur career moves like moving between jobs or leaving job.

That's it.

What is more imp than brooding over work-ex issue is working towards preparing ur best for the Test.

I know a guy fresh BE, went to IIM L interview while having 7 ATKTs and having abt 48% aggregate percentage in first 3 yrs of engineering.

But ppl HE IS IN!!!

He got selected there in IIM L. All thanks to his dynamic, well read n very confident personality. And very important his percentile in CAT 99.90%.

HATS OFF to HIM!!!

All the best to all freshies!!! Do not worry do ur best.

it all depends that how u look from different angles ... though working would help someone to make choicer in the long runs.... i agree with the people that the INDIAN schools are not work orinteted but let me tell u .... freshers most of the time are lost beacuse they dont have mcuh clarity on what they want .. like in my case i thought investment banking woulde be the thing for me now having worked here for 17 months i know that .... its not my line and i am not going to work in a bank ... money and name comes much later .. u have to follow what u would really like .. also the inputs form the freshers in the class would be very different from people who have worked .. sufficient time ....
