Official analysis of Mock Cat 1001:
MC101001 Analysis
--------------------
A long journey of tests and analysis begins with the AIMTEST (MC101001)!! We are sure you will find this journey exciting and an enriching experience in your quest for that prized Management seat at the institute of your dreams. The test series (the AIMCATs in popular lingo) involves the thrill of writing tests, the attendant debates and discussions and the endless fights over the best approach for a particular question. However the most important ingredient here that would make your quest successful is an open mind – An open mind will help you understand your mistakes, imbibe new concepts and discover a thousand ways (pardon the exaggeration!) of saving time in the exam and thereby improving your score. The AIMTEST was intended to be a reminder call that CAT2009 is just some months away and that one needs to pull up their socks and get fighting fit to be able to tackle it. The AIMTEST was based on CAT2008 and was the ideal paper to test one’s state of preparation and identify areas of weakness.
Let us now take a brief look at each section:
Section I – Quantitative:
The Quant section of was of an average level of difficulty and most students would have taken it as a warm up test for the upcoming AIMCAT series. When compared to the quant section of CAT2008, which was more difficult than average, the AIMTEST was a decent beginning. One point that needs to be mentioned even at this early stage of preparation is that every mock test should be considered as a tool for both evaluation and improvement/learning. In fact, the learning aspect of each test cannot be over emphasized and this is a more important aspect than mere evaluation. Many students would have found this section very difficult to navigate since the easy or doable questions were distributed rather sparsely among the seemingly difficult/unfamiliar questions. The key to a great performance in a section, especially in the quant section, is to go through the entire section at least two times, within the time allotted, i.e., about 45 min. In the first round only the familiar/easy questions should be attempted and any lengthy/unfamiliar/difficult questions should be marked as such. The first round should be completed with about 15 min to spare. In the second round, one could look at the lengthy/unfamiliar questions but still leaving out the ones clearly marked as difficult/undoable. Some of the doable questions in the quant section of the AIMTEST were Q. Nos. 1, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 23.
On the whole, an average student in quantitative ability could have managed a score of 18+ marks in this section. Any score from 25 to 40 would be good, 41 to 55 very good and 55+, excellent.
The cut-off score in this section is expected to be around 24-28 marks.
Section II - Logic and Data Interpretation:
The L&DI section of the AIMTEST was modeled on the lines of the CAT2008 paper and would have troubled most students. A good approach in this section is to spend around 40-45 minutes and selecting the Qs where one understood the basic data. The sets on Logic puzzles viz. the one on ‘Seven friends playing games’ and the one on blood relations should have been attempted as students would have been able to comprehend the data. The set on ‘NPA’s of banks’ looked difficult to read/decipher but was among the easy sets in this section and should have been attempted. The Caselet on the ‘Property dealer’ was difficult as it involved quite a few permutations and calculations. The set on ‘Home and away wins of Hockey teams’ was difficult to read on account of the unusual notation but a closer reading would reveal that this was amongst the more doable Qs in this section. The set on ‘Cans containing Kerosene and Petrol’ was difficult and should have been avoided. All in all this was a difficult section and high scores would be a rarity here.
On the whole, an average student in L&DI could have managed a score of around 12+ marks and any score from 24-34 marks can be considered to be good. Any score from 35 to 46 would be very good and 46+, excellent.
The cut-off score in this section is expected to be around 24-28 marks.
Section III – Verbal
The Verbal section of MC101001 was based on the CAT2008 paper and had a good mix of easy, medium and difficult questions. This section however would have proved to be a tough nut to crack with the very difficult verbal questions and the not very easy RC passages. The questions on Grammar tested one’s ability with the written language to the hilt and would have made would scoring very difficult. The questions on Vocabulary looked easy but then each one of them had atleast one set of words which were difficult and couldn’t be resolved easily. The questions on word usage and the fill in the blanks were easier and could have been solved by anyone with a decent reading habit. The Qs on the ‘appropriate’ way to end a paragraph are always difficult to answer and the ones in this test were no exception to this rule. The passages on the ‘East India company’ and the ‘Patanal’ were easy to read and answer. However the passages on ‘Embryo rights’ and the one on ‘IAEA’ were difficult and should have been attempted only as a last resort. An average student in Verbal could have managed a score of around 18+ marks and any score from 34 to 42 marks can be considered to be good. Any score from 43 to 55 would be very good and 55+, excellent.
The cut-off score in this section is expected to be around 34-38 marks.
The overall cut-off score in this paper for at least one IIM call should be around 106-110 marks and any score above 125 marks should fetch at least 3 to 4 IIM calls.

@chocolateguy
Yes, it was. I came to know that the AIMTEST which was conducted in february 2009 had in fact the paper code MC1001, same as this mock cat! But many guys who had started their preparations after feb or many who dint take the test at that time will surely find it useful to take it now!
Please do post your scores and the thread is also open to discussions on the test...
Cheers!
