Dear Lakshya
I am sure u have got tvaried experiences in other industries as well to give this is as ur point of view. How do you come to the conclusion that people in non IT industries do not make as good managers as IT ones? As soon as u step out of the It domain , I can assure u , u will have a different feeling. Have u heard of something called unions? Well yes, IT pros...its unheard of...but trust me ...managing them is one hell of a job in the non IT sector. It takes a lot of guts as well as managerial skills. All FMCGs have them.
and yes, they do make great managers. The world is not only about KTs, and delivery schedules and PMs and PLs ...its much more than that.
So kindly do not generalise.

Regards

Omerta

But all said and done, I must say that software people make batter managers than others. This is solely my point of view and cannot be taken as a baseline..!! The reason being that we have seen so much of Sh** happening in all the projects that we know what can terrible go wrong(i mean c'mon, after a year I still have to see a project which has correct estimates and gets delivered without any hassles..!!), and I guess, most people will agree to this as well..!!

Hey dude, I have nothing against the other industries. i have seen unions and have dealt with them. It's tough I know..!! But then again, In the post i have already mentioned that it's my point of view and it shud not be treated as a base line. All said and done, i would say that whether it's the unions, the Pms or the Pls, mismanagement is their arena and people like us have to step in the chaos, to create order in dosorder..!!

coming to the point.....first of all "why shouldnt software guys move to MBA" ....Bschools all over the world proudly claim that they have a varied class composition... then why not software guys....

then i would say, for more money, better job profile....what more justification do someone need....definitely iam going to give the same answer to the interview panel...(ofcourse if i reach to that stage)
Did i hear someone say MBA for money?

Lets start with some numbers.

on an average a s/w pro with 2-3 years exp gets around 3-3.5 lacks per annum.
now 2 years down the line he will be promoted as a module leader and would be earning something like 5-6 lakhs. add to this some 15-20lakhs earned during the onsite stint.

then, for gods sake, y does some one need to drop his chance of going onsite and prepare his @$$ out to crack CAT and start it all over again(me being 1 such guy)

Its definitely not abt money.

Finally:
CAT 07: QA 99.92, VA 89.80, DI 95.64, OA 99.65

Converts: IIMI, MDI PGPM

WaitListed: IIM L - 56

Been there done that - 30-06-2005, 12:32 PM

Hi All,
Me too a s/w engineer. I have worked for both service industry and product industry(now working). Le'mme give u ppl my bit of gyaan...
Service industry has its own advantage. u get an oppurtunity to understand customers practices and processes...which is very crucial after an MBA...however the interaction level will be low...i agree
on the other hand in a product based cmpny..u hav all the oppurtunity to understand market...market share...competition. You need to talk to sales engineers...who in turn interact with customers. You can pin point exactly as to how the feature i am working on will push my product up in the market competiton.
I get to interact with associates spread across the globe....
So, as we move on....a sales engineer with an MBA is always welcome....

Just spilled over this anonymous thread and could not resist posting. Asking why should s/w or in general IT professional go for an MBA. In my case it is all abt ur passion of what u want to achive in ur life. Me worked in the service industry for almost 3 years and would be going for MBA this year. during these yrs worked under some very impressive and some terribly wicked bosses. Believe me the good and bad ones both motivated me. Always dreamt tht i would make myself better thn this good manager and never be like the bad suppresive one. A one who may be praised at his back, afterall how many of these r thr . easier said than done, but for me money is definiteley not the reason for doing MBA, it's the zeal of acheiving wht i dream of. MBA will certanly provide people like me a much needed thrust in our endeavors of making it big.
