My Experiences at SPJ Interview:
Venue: Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, B'lore
Time: A dull 2:00 PM.
Preliminary:
Grp Interview with 7 guys. A pretty organised preliminary round. Everyone getting a fair chance. The more intersting your answers more time and attention you get. It was mostly personal questions put to everyone and then the huge panel of 10 questioning you on your answers. Went on for close to 1 hour. 2 of the 7 made it to the next stage.
There was another panel which was doing the Preliminary round. I was told each in the grp was given a copy of a news article and were asked to discuss the article for 15 min.s after which the stuff mentioned above continued.
This stage may be tough if u are unlucky to fall in to a difficult grp.
Final:
The final stage had three gentlemen in their early 70s as the panel. That again was a grp interview. This was basically a confirmation of a few findings the panel of the first round has noted down and then a few questions on your essays. There will be a guy trying to disturb u'r concentration by staring at you incessantly and will be writing down something on your form whenever you look towards him.
Search u'r forms for any wrong detail. One of the guys in the final stage was asked
how his family income was just 2 lacs p.a when his father was working in Saudi? The guy turned pale and cud not give any answer.
This was followed by a 50q test which was a Psycho-analysis stuff. Look for traps here. There will be same questions rephrased coming at regular intervals. Make sure your answers to these don't contradict one another.
SPJ thus is a line by line analysis of what u have said in your essays. Shud be a cake walk if u r well prepared with all q's possible on u'r application.
DOs:
Just know line by line and column by column what is there in the form you sent to SPJ.
Be careful when answering the psycho-analysis test. Don't fall in to the trap.
Try to project u'rself as a xtra-curri buff in the preliminary stage for evoking gr8er interest in the panel on questioning you.
DONT's:
U 'll have to wait for hours together before u get a chance for the final interview after the preliminary is over. Don't get impatient. I suspect there were a few guys watching what was going on in the lounge every now and then.
All the Best.....
I reiterate...."Your Application Form and Essays are u'r text books to prepare for the SPJ interview."
Now for Ravi's question. I did not join because
1) I could afford a 2nd attempt.
2) SPJ was ready to offer only Info Mngmt.
3) IIM is IIM and SPJ is SPJ though the placement one may get in SPJ is as good as one will get in the IIMs.
Now the secret

I am a bit fanatic abt being at the IIMs though I am not very sure if I have it in me to be there...)
