Learning techniques for Vocabulary - 03-07-2009, 11:19 PM

Learning techniques for Vocabulary

Vocabulary plays guiding role for CAT entrance because it helps through out verbal section and also in GD/PI rounds. But grasping new vocabulary and retaining it are not such easy tasks. It’s all about the right technique. There should be the modus operandi to learn such words as we cannot mug them up.

1. Being a voluntary Reader
If you are a voluntary reader, mastering new vocabulary won’t be a problem for you. As the same words are likely to figure again and again in your reading, you will get well acquainted with them.
2. Source Citing
Another possible and interesting way out can be the method of source citing. Go to sites like dictionary.com. It is an online dictionary, frequently updated. Here you can easily find out the source from which the word has originated.
3. Learning prefixes, suffixes, roots

This method is also very effective. If we know some roots, prefixes and suffixes, we can easily anticipate the meanings of words having same roots, prefixes or suffixes. Take for example, ‘-pathy’ which means feeling. So, it becomes easy to comprehend meaning of a new word with this suffix. Like, ‘sympathy’- ‘similar feeling’, ‘apathy’- ‘no feelings’, Antipathy’- ‘negative feelings’ and so on. It’s quite simple, isn’t it?
4. Associating
If you associate or relate a certain word with something or someone, like any of your companions, chums or relatives, the process becomes simple. For instance, the word ‘irascible’ is used for a person who is very ‘irritable’ and ‘impatient’. Now, one of your acquaintances can be of this nature. Associate this word with this person. Whenever s/he comes before your eyes, this word will come to your mind and vice-versa.
5. Swapping
This is a technique to diversify your learning. You can learn in both ways, paradigmatic as well as syntagmatic. Swap the word you have done, with the ones having the same meaning. Like, we can swap the word ‘irascible’ with words like cranky, grouchy, grumpy, petulant, peevish etc.
7. Creating Stories
Another entertaining method of learning new words is by creating stories while learning. It’s an easy method. Take a word, ‘assiduous’. It means ‘to work diligently’. Now create a story. ‘Ass’ is donkey. Take it as ‘dhobi ka gadha’ which works day in and day out. So, a person who works diligently is ‘assiduous’.
8. Effective speech
Everyone wants to be a good orator. To become one, learning words is not enough. You have to use these words in your speech to make it rhetorical and impressive. So, keep learning, keep swapping, keep creating and keep using. The world will surely listen to you.

Re: Prepare for Online CAT 2009 with Tanveer - 04-07-2009, 06:51 PM

Pls ..

Here's my story. I had enrolled with TIME for the long term classes last year though not very serious. In the 4 aimcats i took last year, got 88.2% and 10.1% in two and no result in the other two (time website stated i might not have marked the ovals properly). didn't appear for any other tests. took CAT 08 and got 91.1%.

right now, i'm waiting for last semester b.tech results with a job offer from a popular IT company. anyway, i wish to get into a good b.school this year.
as part of that, appeared for aimcat 0919. the scores are pathetic..

No. ________%ile_________ AIR __________Cutoffs not cleared
1019________52.31__________16255___________QA, VA, DI.

i believe i did lot better than these marks show. had not marked the answers on the question paper planning to take the test again on reaching home. i've history of darkening incorrect ovals on the OMR sheet a number of times during campus placement tests. so bit worried if thats the reason..

could u account for this lack of consistency?

Re: Prepare for Online CAT 2009 with Tanveer - 05-07-2009, 01:11 PM

Hey,

When I joined TIME AIMCAT-BASIC series then i was told (even it is given in the TIMe site) that i would get 5 PP, 7 OL-INV and 5 OL-T4E exams and 10 OL-Mocks. Now looking into the AIMCAT schedule till Ocotober first week it is quite clear that I am getting only 3 PP, 3 OL-INV and 1 OL-T4E. So where are the remaining ones?
I understand by next one and half months(October to Nov mid) they would cover some of the exams. But still the doubt is how many they can?
If any of you can clarify that will be great.

PS: PP = Paper-Pencil, OL-INV = Online invigilated and OL-T4E = Online exam taken through TIME website.

ne idea abt erudite or ims???

highlighted initially.

status “Available for Review”.
9. Click on the status. The instructions for the test will be displayed. At the end of the
instructions (see the screen shot below), you have to enter the access code (will be provided at
the examination centre). Then press start. The test will start in a new window.

invigilator.
How to take the test?
1. The test page consists of the following:
a. “Section” bar: The Shaded bar at the top shows the number of sections in the test. The section
that is being answered currently is highlighted. When the test loads initially, Section I is
highlighted.
4
b. “Question List” Panel: The panel on the left shows the number of questions in the section. All

This will help you identify the questions you want to review.
i. Clicking on the button again will remove the bookmark. You can use this when you no longer
want to review the question.
7
g. “Submit test” button: When you have finished and want to submit the test, click on this
button.
Note: Do not close the browser window during the test.
2. How to take the test:
a. Selecting a question: Choose the section you want to answer from the “Section Bar”. Choose
the question from the “Question list” panel. The question will be displayed in the “Main”
panel.

clicking on the appropriate radio button (a small circle located on the left of the answer
choice). When you click on the radio button, a blue dot will appear inside the radio button and
a dotted square appears around the radio button.
8

your new answer. The blue dot and the dotted square shift from the old radio button (next to
your old answer) to the new radio button.
