1.> CAT as such has always been an exam to test your abilities wrt mathematics and awareness of english language, so not much change in terms of difficulty level will be seen considering IIMS will not compromise with the talent.
2.> My feelings are that this E-CAT will be more on the terms of GMAT with well specified sections and limited time to finish it. It is also possible to have a Computer Adaptive Test where the level of questions are decided based on your previous answers as correct or wrong.
3.> Putting it in terms like "different papers on 10 different days" will be incoherent with the idea instead you will have a set of questions with various difficulty levels and based on your performance the computer will adapt itself to throw at you the questions, e.g. if u provide correct answer to an average question computer will place a slightly tough question, if u do it right than it will ask another toughie....but if u get it wrong it will ask u a moderate question again,,,so it tries to put you in a band of ability where you are performing great.
4.> Definitely this will give IIMS an edge with GMAC's GMAT exam.
5.> I would suggest all to kindly make themselves aware with pattern of GMAT ..it would surely help.
6.> Last but not the least lets wait till July when IIms will provide us all the details of exam and till then let us just work hard and improve our fundamentals and their applications....

I agree with you thevoid,
this year cat has outsource to prometrics pvt ltd which is handeling GRE/GMAT all over world and i have seen that body who has associated with this has left some impression on the papar.. i mean there will be full chance that the exams will give GRE/GMAT shades... I have seen that IRMA and NMAT handle by some Banking co-opreration so u will find that the quality of questions are of equally difficult and more on calculation based.. so with this logic there are chances that IIM could adopt computwer adaptive pattern so it will be difficult for 85% of the indian students (including me as VA is not my best subject) ...

re: Prepare for Online CAT 2009 with Tanveer -

Except from some reservations I sincerely think that an online CAT is in the best interests of the students. It will be more accessible to people in villages cause they can now choose a day of their choice in a nearby city and avoid sitting on small benches in rural schools or colleges with wood splinters piercing their buttocks while they try writing the exam that could change their destiny.
Moreover as someone has already mentioned before CBT or computer based test means that no more humongous RCs and very lengthy papers. It will be more than obvious to people at IIM that a lot of students even engineers are not able to read from computer screens for a long time.
Also I think that IIMs wont go for an C.A.T computer adaptive test because everyone who gives CAT or is preparing to to give CAT knows about the pressure testing thingy or whatever you people call it. It is something like this - CAT exam has questions that range from easy to difficult to bust-a-nut difficult. So, under time, pressure and other variables you have to select the sitters and solve them to get a call. But if the CAT turns adaptive like GMAT this whole theory of time, pressure and aerodynamics sorry... decision making will be thrown off the cliff because in GMAT the paper shows you one question at a time and you have to choose an answer to go to the next one. Also there is no negative marking.
Finally, if CAT goes adaptive like GMAT it will not remain the CAT (as we know it now); it will become indianized version of GMAT. This is another example of american culture degrading and destablizing our heritage. Just kidding.

@all:
1)I think if IIM doesn want to deviate too much from the way it has been been conducting the exams before..
a)There'd be ten different sets of question papers for the ten days
b)the percentiles wil be calculated seperately for each of the ten days..
c)the top percentilers from each will then called for the gd-pi..
2)IF its going to be adaptive then we better not leave out any topic.Cos each question counts!!so start preparing with full earnest.
For people who ve already written cat before, there is time to touch down on all topics which you are not comfortable in..
3)if its going to be adaptive don you puys think only the best of the best can get through???so isnt that good in a way??

Spot on!!!
Well, I gave the IIT exam twice and always found it too difficult for ppl like me,on the other hand CAT was 1 exam where u dont have to be a genius to get thru, and I was getting to terms with it, adaptive again means the best of the best wuud get thru, the brainy, creamy layer wud make it thru, welll......that doesn't make smart managers...does it???? CAT, was all about selectivity, being smart, knowing what to leave when, exactly what's reqd in real life for a manager......now attempting everythin, would again make it a battle of the best brains, not the smartest, and guyz like me, wud be left out!!!!! So, in my opinion, it shud not be an adaptive exam!!! Again, i'll mention the same thing, we'll get to know about all this in July, which is hardly 3-4 months from the D-Day....I feel they are leaving it too late....newaz....sorry for the repetition.....just that I've just cme out of the second round of the '08 season,so subjectivity is all I can think of!!! All the best, puys, lets crack it this time no matter what!

Well....now that its going online we might as well live with it...
and build our own strategies....as above
:seating problems will be solved majorly..
:we gave the BITS engineering entrance last year...and it save time as we did not have to worry about shading the darn bubbles..
:If you are used to reading stuff continually on a screen good for you...for people unable to sit in fornt onf the screen for too long(eye strain n all) JTB.
:All in all lets just accept this as another format shift for which the IIMs are famous and live with it...
and come with our own individual strategies.
:Yes,the number of attempts MUST be reduced. Its so damn hard on the first timers!
*No Sacrifice....No Victory..
*Only God Will Judge Me..

CAT selection criteria depends on 1.CAT score, GD, PI, Work Ex and Acads..as you see the acads is only one of the shortlist criteria. more over
to cherish your iim dream you need about + 99.8%ile to be on the safer side. not that people with 97.5 did not made it, but a high score in CAT will overcome certain short comings in other factors./
same is the case with X.L.R.I. how evfer as far as i know the %ile should be at 98+.
remeber one more thing, you also need 95 %ile4 in each section to get shoert listed to GDPI process as per this year...
So first try to get a mamoth score in CAT...
I wish you all the best..........
