hey,
lot many factors are involved but if you want to keep it simple :
if you love technical work then pursue the same line till the time you feel bored or ready to grow...
if you are ready to explore other career options find out about job profiles of someof your mba friends..sounded OKish to me but the money was great !
if you have enuf work experience the spjain, ximb would be decent enuf to get you a job of your nature...
if not, then Tier-1 is your best bet!

i guess ... look for 20 years ahead .. maybe at that time if u want to change ur career path .. you would be restricted .. an ECONOMIC times article recently mentioned about it .. WHY IT-PROFESSIONALS REQUIRE AN MBA ...
not a necessity .. but definitely a safe option .. though costly Change is Permanent ... Growth is Optional !!!

Yep ..here is the economic times article http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/...25,curpg-1.cms
My take is that being a techie is great when u work for core techie firms like MS, Adobe,Intel etc..... but for generic services/product companies like Infy , TCS , IBM etc... being a techie can get u stuck after a certain level...

Wud agree to wht most of posts have mentioned plus evn the ET.
In IT u do tend to face a quarter life crisis or middle level in career.. when u start feelin that da challenge is not enuf..! Dont compare monetarily .. its only that some of IT ppl feel stuck up in an ocean with not much to differentiate u with others... They then start runnin for options like mba n all.. ( not all mind u...)
So if u are heading for an IT career.. better hav n mba as a add on... rather than being jus a pure techie..!
Ofcourse.. opinions do vary..!
manishp..

another important thing to consider is ur educational background. since the IT firms are paying good money, they'll also want people with sufficient knowledge from decent institutes.
this is all the more relevent when we consider the 'core techie' firms. for them, knowledge is a very important factor. they might prefer an Mtech to a Btech or a Phd to an Mtech as they are ready to pay.
so if u r looking for building a career with good money in tech. ur education will count for a lot.

If earnings are ur primary concern then u should go for an MBA. Tech. jobs in the long run will turn out to be less paying than an MBA, unless u have a really good educational background in tech.
also u may have to give more time (and effort??) to get the requisite education in tech than doing an MBA.

well, when u ppl are sayin that MBA is more important in the long run, dyu mean JUST an MBA degree, or an MBA from the XLRI's and FMS's...
i mean, what if u had the choice between an IT career and MBA(PGDM) from say, TAPMI,NIRMA,FORE or AMITY, what'll u choose... that's also very important...
so let's put it this way...
non-iim could mean so many colleges... let's put various colleges under various brackets... the choice of some colleges over IT may be pretty clear, like, FMS,XLRI,IITB,NITIE,BAJAJ,MDI,SP JAIN...
what about the other colleges, like, say TAPMI,FORE,AMITY,NIRMA,WELINGKAR etc...which of these colleges should be/can be given a miss in favour of a good IT job.....

A very pertinent issue....
I have been facing the same dilemma since some time. But I feel that it also depends on how satisfied you are with your job. After all satisfaction is what matters.
There are a couple of pros for Technical job - Better onsite opportunity , which means more money if you can grab a long one.I really don't think that a MBA from a non IIM institute has such kind of onsite opportunities. And if you are really a technical guy it is difficult to leave your first love.
A MBA degrees gives you the flexibility to move across industries and hence probably avoiding that Mid / Quarter life crisis. A life with the sword hanging on your neck but probably that is the thrill.
Totally a personal choice.... Have not been able to make one yet but believe to do my best in whatever field I am. Success requires no explanation and failure permits none. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
