I also had a balaced CAT score and have 21 months of work experience.
Please help me figure out if I still have chances to get through MDI.
Any help would be highly appreciated.

pranjal,

i dun think any1 ll b able to tell u da 'exact' break up with 'surity' as they nvr disclose it...its true that they give high weightages to cat scores but i knw many ppl in mdi who made it to gd/pi with 97.9x %iles and still managed to get a seat..moreover, most of em wr freshers..u have decent wrk ex as well..

and gd/pi being good/decent/poor doesnt gurantee u a result in same direction..yes, it gives u a rough idea bt dun forget that its all relative..if u think that ur gd/pi was good, the other candidate might have given a btr shot...and wen i say 'better', i mean from panelists' pt of view..cuz thats wot matters in da end..

newz, i read it smwere..'hope fr da best, prepare fr da worst'..thats wot i personally feel strongly about as well..

atb!!!!!

Re: [2009] MDI Gurgaon GD/PI Experiences (PGPM,IM,HR) - 09-04-2009, 03:20 AM

Acads:
X : 89.6%
XII : 89.4%
Undergrad Major - 7.45/10

Work-Ex: 0 Months

CAT %ile: 99.19
DI : 91.86
Quant : around 95
Verbal : around 99

VENUE: Indismart Hotel, Kolkata, April 8th, 2 PM. Panel 3.

GD topic: Effect of Global turndown on India.
Number of Ppl present : 9/12
Time: 10-20 min. We were told that we can go on with discussion for any time till we are getting newer points to discuss. We were finally stopped at around 15 mins of discussion.

Brief Snapshot of Discussion:
Energetic discussion. Points never stopped. Everyone but one spoke. I put 4-5 valid points over the time.
No Summary.

PI Slot: 6th of 9
Panel Number: 3
Panel Members : 2 , One male professor(G) and a lady faculty(L)

Questions:

me: good evening sir(Lady faculty went out for some thing while I entered.)
G: Good evening, sit down please.

G: What other calls you have?
me: FMS calls for both programs. W/L 35 in MBA(MS).
G: Which programs are there in FMS?
me: blah blah...
G: So what are the chances?
me: Last year W/L 61 was cleared so I am hopeful of a conversion.
G: Chances are good! Ok, tell me what happened in last one year in economy and how does it affect the chances of conversion?
me: Global gyan. Less job, etc etc etc...
G: So, MDI or MS?
me: Sir, me not really sure at this stage which one to choose. While I am inclined to MDI for its residential and infrastructure facilities and the peer intraction I'll be getting thru various projects and presentations etc.
G: What the doubt then. tumne dono points jo bataye, woh to MDI ko support karte hain!
me: sir, FMS has also a good brand value. Aur sir, it has better RETURN ON INVESTMENT. (I may for the rest of life regret why I used the term instead of simple, elegant "low fees")

By this time, L has returned.

G: Achha chalo, ROI batao. Main tumhe is par judge karoonga, to soch samajh kar kaam karna. tum mujhe fms aur MDI ka ROI calculate kar ke dikhao.
Me: (phans gaya beta tu )
Meanwhile, G to L: Aajkal k bache na dhang k engineer hote hain na managers. baat hi shuru karte hain ROI aur Fiscal deficit se. Hamare jamaane me engineers aise nahi hote the. pata nahi kya baat hai?
L to G: May be it's the system that has changed. Made them more open to various fields and...

While listeneing to these things, I did something something... Took assumed package to be 20 L on-campus, and calculated "something" that came 175% for MDI and 10000% for FMS! Showed them the calculations.

L: Hmmm... so which job are you doing?
G to L: He is a fresher. Abhi final year me hai.
L: Ohhk.. so u in Idian School of Mines, what is the probability of getting a job from there?
Me: 0.99
L: What is average package?
Me: 4 L, maam.
L: So, basically when u r going for MBA, ain't you foregoing 8L ruppes more and shall that not be taken into account.
(Ab samajh me aaya matlab baat ko gol gol ghumaane ka )
Me: Yes maam. Sorry Maam. These are the things I expect to learn from MBA.
L: We don't teach you to think... (G gave a huge smile-> at me! )
L: You heard of opportunity cost?
Me: Yes maam, read it in managerial economics. Defined it. She seemed satisfied with my explanantion.

G: theek hai so u have call for MS program of FMS, which is at South Delhi. (he contimued with some data, which I, the miserable one sitting before them, neither could argue nor support it... The data contained some materials which could back fire me on both sircmstances, whether I supported or rejected. Regarding placements, brand value etc yaar ye nanha sa bachha(me) ye sab kya karega jaan kar?)

Me: hmmm... yes sir u r right. haan,, yes...

G: tumne to phir sirf saal ka ROI calculate kiya. baad ka kya? Degree ki value...
(ab kya boloon? )

G to L: Isko kuchh nahi aata hai... Bhejo isko baahar.
L to G: wait, thoda aur dekh lete hain.

L: You like science?
Me: (why??) yes maam.
L: which, P C or M?
Me: physics maam.
L: can u tell me how a mirage is formed? Show it.
Me: (aah... chalo thoda aasan sa sawaal hai) did first half okay, started fine but total internal reflection waali baat bhool gaya and it is a big blunder...
G to L: isko to ye bhi nahi aata...
G: chalo chhodo ye, tere se nahi hoga. projectile motion bata sakte ho?
(I smiled thinking ki isme bhi ghapla jaroor hoga.)
L to G: change the question. muskura raha hai yaani ki ye aata hai isko.
G to L: aata to pehle mirage formation bhi tha. bataane do isko.
Me: did a decent job here. L seemed satisfied and happy with my explanations.

Puys, those who are thinking that G is being rude or anything, plz do not. Infact, the way he said all the mocking remarks have strange sense of affection and humor in it, rather than sarcasm. Infact, I was enjoying the interview by now...

G: (ye bhi thode happy ho gaye mere projectile k explanation par.) escape velocity bata do.
G to L: aaj hamlog bhi thoda seekh lein ki escape velocity kya hoti hai, bada suna hai iske baare me.
Me: (mujhse hi kyun sun na chahte ho sir??? ) I goofed it up again. I wrote expression correctly but couldn't recall the "centripetal force" thing, mv2/r. So I goofed it up completely.

G: tumhe maine mirage me bhi hint diya, TIR ka. yahan bhi maine hint diya par...
G to L: ise kuchh bhi nahi aata hai. next candidate ko bulao. (for the 2nd time in interview he said it)

L to G: nahi thoda aur pooch lete hain. Politics?
G to L: koi jawab nahi milne wala, bekar hai.
L to G: par abhi to aaya hai.
G to L: nahi nahi. he has been with us for a longg time now(actually my interview was actually was longest in the six interviews so far, 25 minutes around.)
L to G: ohkkk

G: koi gila shikwa interview se?
Me: no sir, It was all my fault I goofed it up.

L: No no no. do not think it that way. We asked you some questions u couldn't answer. May be we asked you 20 questions and u couldn't answer only one questions. We are not looking you for answers. And I tell you, i really liked you smiling and being comfortable in interview.
(God knows what that means!)

All in all, I wouldn't have selected myself from this interview. But I enjoyed it thoroughly. Just hope ki FMs convert ho jaaye yahaan to nayiaa(boat) doob gayi(sank).

Note: All the hindi words writeen above were ACTUALLY in hindi.

Re: [2009] MDI Gurgaon GD/PI Experiences (PGPM,IM,HR) - 10-04-2009, 08:14 AM

Hello Puys,

In order to know the how many candidates have been selected in other institutes, I have created a spreadsheet for MDI candidates selected for GD/PI. I request all of you to update the same with your respective data. Hope to see you all participate heavily and help us to ascertain to a certain level the trend of waitlist movement this year. Once again, ALL THE BEST!!!

Please click and edit the file. You won't need to save it.

http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?k...gd3pq4VGDpo8Tw

Please create a poll also where puys can vote whether they have already been selected in other institue and will be joining MDI or not.

Work-Ex: 22 months in an IT major.

DI -- 81.xx
Quant -- 97.xx

Any other special thing abt u: Organized techfest and many cultural events in college, Karate Yellow Belt

VENUE: IIM B, 23rd March 2009. 3PM. PGPM course.

GD:
Topic: Should Narendra Modi be made the PM of India.
Number of ppl present: 12(called) minus 3(didnt turn up) = 8
Brief Snapshot of Discussion:
4 or 5 minutes to jot down points on a piece of paper. And we began. It was a moderate fish-market... 3 guys did most of the talking with loud voices.. cutting each other and scrambling for the spotlight. It was quite difficult for the rest 5(including me) to actually get our points out. We had one BLACKI among us who struggled till the end to get his turn to speak. Poor guy. After 5 silent minutes... everyone realized that that we had to become a bit aggressive... (my loud voice helped here ) But I cut in as politely as it is possible in a moderate fishmarket GD... Overall I made 3 entries... with 2 unique points... and I listened quite seriously while the others talked... I mean not just for the sake of the GD... I actually found the discussion interesting...

Meanwhile.. I noticed that the 2 panelists were laughing hysterically while we were having our GD.

PI:
The panel was same as in the GD. HinglishGuy(HIG) and DistinguishedIntellectualLookingGuy(DIG). Moi enters. HIG standing behind a chair, leaning forward on it. DIG is sitting in his chair and studying my profile sheet.
DIG(looking at profile sheet): So Rahul.. Yellow Belt... did you continue Karate?
Moi: No sir... I started a lot of things that I didn't finish. (it was a stupid self-negating statement said in the hope they would ask about the 'other' things as well... maybe not the right answer. )
DIG: How old were you when you learnt karate?
Moi: umm... I guess 19 years old.
HIG: achha? Good.. tab tak toh bones and cartilage must have hardened hai na Sir... (and to me) Can you do the split?
Moi: Umm... (brain recalls a stupid Roadies audition that I'd seen..) Sir... actually we were taught Katas.... that's a sequence of steps with hand and leg movements and...
HIG(shakes head and cuts me off sharply): What is your name?
Moi(3 sec pause): Rahul.
HIG: Good. (pause) Got it? (smiles..)
Moi: Got it sir...(they wanted me to be to the point ). No I cannot do the split.
(Long pause... with both panelists smiling.. dont know what they were thinking though...)
DIG: Tell us something about yourself Rahul apart from what's written in this profile sheet.
Moi: blah blah...
DIG: So... what was your plan for the GD?
Moi talked slowly and to the point... measuring each word like a politician... In between, HIG and DIG screw me a bit and after a while I became defensive... HIG sensed it....
HIG(smiles): Defensive mat ho jao yaar... abhi tak achha baat kar rahe the...
Moi: ok sir... (continued a little more openly... compared the loud mouth and the silent BLACKI..) Finally I clarified that I meant playing a lead role in the GD would have been a satisfactory performance according to me.
HIG: accha... tell me what are the types of leadership...
Moi: According to me... leadership means blah blah blah....
While talking, I realized that HIG wanted the active and passive leadership types as the answer to his question.(coz he wanted to tell me I should've done passive leadership during the GD) Anyway... he didn't drill me about it....
HIG: toh GD mein kya karna chahiye tha...
DIG: You should have made sure that those who didn't get a chance got to speak and those who were loud didn't go out of control. Isn't it?
Moi: Yes Sir.
We discussed a bit more about the GD... and then... a long pause from both panelists.... I look outside the window at the lawn and the red brick buildings of IIM-B...
DIG(talking to HIG): Indian School of Mines... hmm... it's a premier college hain na sir?
HIG looked at me for an answer...
Moi: umm.. yes sir... The admission is through IIT-JEE.
DIG: What was your rank?
Moi: (told)
DIG: What is your branch?
Moi: (told)
DIG: Ok Rahul... standard question... why did you join blah blah company..?
Moi: blah blah...
I digressed a bit... and then I stopped myself and said.. my own name!! I said it out loud... indicating that I recalled that I shud speak to the point like they asked me at the beginning... It was rather funny... and was greeted by broad smiles by both panelists). more blah blah...
DIG(long pause): That's why you joined?
Moi: Yes Sir. (hmm.. why did he ask me the question again? )
DIG asked me a bit about my poor acads and I answered... but I didn't get a chance to justify.
HIG: Ok Rahul... you said you are very logical right? I'll ask you a simple question... koi trick or puzzle nhi hai... very simple. Suppose a family travels in a car. Husband, Wife, child, Grandma and Granpa. 5 people... each sit one beside the other... now.. ek person dusre person ke upar chad jaata hai... now tell me... how many people are there on whom no one is sitting?
Moi(slight pause): 3.. no sir... 4....!!
(HIG laughed slightly and shaked head dismissively )
DIG(looks at HIG): Ok Rahul... It was really nice talking to you.
Moi: Same here Sir.
DIG asked me the CAT percentile... and wrote it down.
DIG: Any questions?
I badly wanted to ask them why they laughed during the GD... but I let it go... and said nothing.. and left..

VERDICT: Waitlisted 256

GD:
Topic: Educational Qualifications are losing their values.

Number of Ppl present: 10 ppl present , 1 Absent

Time the GD lasted - 10-12 Minutes

Brief Snapshot of Discussion:
Moi started the GD by saying that - Friends the very fact that we all are sitting here represents that our undergraduate degree has been devalued(Writing this coz later on i was mauled abt this in the PI ).
Came in the GD for 3-4 times.
All in all a cordial discussion which could have been a fish market

PI:
Slot:2-5:30 PM
Panel Number:3
Panel Members Intro: A male prof (M) , A female prof (P) , Myself (SX)

The Mauling starts

Lady member comes out of the board room and invites me to the board room.

Greetings

M- Arey Baba! Why r u standing? Sit down.
(I take a seat )
M- Why r u here?
SX- To get into MDI.
M- So, Wht other calls do u have?
SX- Sir , MDI is my sole call.
M- Wht? Where did u mess up?
SX- Sir , Bad VA %ile
M- How much?
SX- 91
M- So , your english is bad?
SX- Not that bad , Actually i considered it to be my strength during my preps
M- CAT is an UNFAIR exam
SX- (Smiles)
M- Bekaar hain yaar CAT
SX- (Smiles)
M- CAT is vry unfair.OK! Tell me how should CAT be standardised?
SX- Sir, CAT is on its way to standardise itself
M- How?
SX- Equal weightage to English and QA/DI put together (BLAH BLAH)
M- So u mean CAT has not been standardised for the past 50 yrs ?
(The lady prof comes in as well)
L- And u also mean that QA and DI require same set of skills. If they require same set of skills then are they fools to give you two different sections?
SX (Smiling shamelessly) - While preparation i had this perception that they require same set of skills , but i need to rethink my perceptions
(BOTH "SEEMED" SATISFIED)
L- What perception?
SX- The perception that CAT is gng the GMAT way
L- What's the GMAT way?
SX- Equal weightage to maths and english.
L-Ok! Forget it. Let's get baack to the GD
SX- With a big Smile...... SURE MAM
L- You said educational qualifications are getting devalued
SX- Yes Mam
L-What is the chief value of educational qualification
SX- Talked abt various things ... knowledge .... et al (Pretty Arbit i would like to believe)
L- What are the parameters on which you would define values? I want you to quantify them?
SX- Quantify them as in parameters
L- Yes
SX-Mam i need 1 minute to think
L- Sure! Take your time
SX takes a pen and a paper and starts writing down parameters.... In the meanwhile L and M start their conversation in bengali
SX- Comes up with parameters like- Patents , Quality of Faculty , Paper Presentations, Projects , Awards/Prizes et. al.......
L-(sees tha list) and says Acc to all the parameters that u have written the quality of educational qualifications has been increasing.
(M comes in)
M-Ok! tell me how would you integrate them?
SX- Binomial distribution?
M- Arey No Binomial yaar
L-You would calculate an index
SX- Yes , Mam we'll take a weighted mean (explained evrything)
L- So , tell me are the educational qualifications still losing its values?
SX- Mam , we would need lots of data , parameters ,also said in between about education being VALUELESS and also translated it into AMULYA in hindi
L corrected me and said
L-It is "invaluable" Anant.....
(NOW JUST LISTEN TO WHAT "M" SAYS)
M- Aaj kal ke bachche , Swayam Saraswati Maa hoti to tumhare bhaasha ka prayog sun ke ro padti
SX,L and M - All three start laughing like anything (ofcozz in a vry formal way)
L- So wht do u feel abt the topic
SX- It is very Generic
L- It is not generic. It is a very important topic.
SX- It is genrically a vry important topic
(Smiles all round)
L- OK! Tell me what is your gut feeling abt the issue?
SX- Talked abt knowledge.........and how educational qualifications in abundance would devalue itself .... the way money devalues itself ...... talked abt knowledge ..... liquidity et al
M- What is knowledge?
SX- Knowledge is the most liquid asset
M- I thought it to be the most solid asset
SX- Sir acc to me it is the most liquid asset
M-It is solid
SX- Sir i think it is liquid
M- I think it is Solid because ... once u have it u store it in ur mind and it is rite up there
SX- I think it is Liquid because ..... once u have it u can transact it anywhere anytime.
(Smiles all round )
L- What is liquidity?
SX- (explained)
(By then they were getting into serious talk as well....... the way we get into the discussion)
L- So your hobby is Writing Diary?
SX-Yes Mam
M-It is a vry good thing to do
L- It is a vry injurious thing to do
SX- (Smiles)
M-How has it helped you?
SX- Blah Blah BLah.....gives an honest assesment of self.......Helped me in catapulting frm 82%ile last year to a very good %ile this yr.
M- (Laughing) - Go back....write your diary ..... get a 100%ile... Come back again
SX- (Smiles....actually laughing)
L- But it is a vry injurious thing to do.......Suppose your Girl Friend ditches you....and u have a new gf .... she'll get to knw abt ur past affairs et al.......
SX- (with smile) Mam, If that is the case.... I have been extremely lucky in tht case

(M and L virtually blushing at Moi reply)

L-Ok you read a lot? (had written another hobby as reading)
SX- mam evrything frm psychology to fiction to sociology
L- What in Sociology?
SX- Abt socialism , capitalism , communism
M- YAAAAAAAAR pehle kyun nahi bataya ye sub
L- We have wasted a lot of tymm discussing irrelevant things
SX- Mam , Education and Values are important topic to discuss as well
M- Yaar , vo to tumhare liye..... Hamare liye to ye sub zyada important hain
SX- (Smiles)
L-So , what r u a SOCIALIST / COMMUNIST / CAPITALIST ?

SX- Mam Since I am KRISHNA BHAKT i am a SOCIALIST.
(L and M are amazed as if i have blurted out something insane)
L- How?

SX- When Krishna says - YADA YADA HI DHARMASYA.........
What he actually means is.......Whenever their wud be evil in the society he will come and destroy them..... Similar is the case with Socialism......For eg. SUB PRIME CRISIS .... their are toxic assets in the market and the government is trying to get rid of them
AND when,
Krishna Says - KARMANYE VAADIKARASTE ........

What he actually means is..... Do ur work.... dont worry abt gains..... Same is the case with SOCIALISM..... where u do ur work and dont worry abt capital gains.......
and these are two cornerstones of socialist philosphies.....

(Smiles All round)

M-Hmm... Creative thinking , Lateral Thinking

(A sort of discussion on Socialism and Krishna ensues...with lot of smiles)

L- So if you are a Socialist? Why would u do MBA?
M-We'll be wasting a Seat if we take you......Infact go and inform others abt Not doing MBA...... it is of no use.....
SX- Mam MBA is not only about money i believe it is more about-
1.Asking Questions
2.Seeking Solutions
3.Making Strategic Choices

L(within a second of my completed answer)- bangs the table with her File/Folder and says - BULL SHIT!!!!!!! MBA is all about money.
(Smiles all round)

M to L - Ab jaane do isey , bahut tym ho gaya hain ..........
L and M - All the best
SX- Thank you
I stand up was making my way out.......and then M called me
SX- yes sir?
M- Keep Writing your diary , it'll help u next year
SX- (With a CLOSE UP SMILE) - definitely sir......
SX- Thank u mam , thank u sir.

The only +ve thing frm my side was tht i was SMILING and LAUGHING all throughout the interview

VERDICT : CONVERT

Re: [2009] MDI Gurgaon GD/PI Experiences (PGPM,IM,HR) - 24-04-2009, 09:38 AM

Hey guys srry for posting late..was tensed waiting for the results and heard a crazy rumor that profs were reading the pg posts..anyways here goes..at least it will be useful for the next years' people

CAT %ile: DI-90.xx;Quant-87.xx;Verbal-98.xx;Aggregate-98.54

Any other special thing abt u:

VENUE: IndiSmart Hotel , Kolkata ,08/04/2009

SPECIALIZATION:PGPHR

Simulaton Exercise-As has been explained nicely by other people before..remember one important rule-u have to use at least 3 raw materials to make a finished product.

Now comes the PI

Participants-M-Ma'am,S-Sir,B-Me the bakra

SUMMARY-They began by telling me i was too laid-back (unsatisfactory personality),told me in the middle I was a hopeless case and ended by clapping sarcastically

DETAILS-
Customary greetings and sit down

M-Ok so (looking at my form) I.T. student?

B-Yes Ma'am.final yr

M-H/w or s/w?

B-s/w

M-ok tell me wat is E.R.P.?

B-faltered in giving the definition

M(frowning)-Tell me 2 company implementations of E.R.P.

B(misunderstood the question as 2 companies implementing E.R.P.'s)-Answered wrongly

S-Listen to the question before answering..we asked u 2 E.R.P. implementations.

B-Sorry sir I don't know..haven't learnt

S-Oh I see haven't learnt.not haven't been taught

B ( smiling)-Sir I meant that only

S-So introduce yourself briefly

B-spoke for abt 30 secs before S interrupts again

(by now he has got the look on his face )

S-Why are u always so (pausing) laid-back?

B-Sir I am a very calm guy..but I am also a very enthusiastic person..i prefer to show my enthu in my work.

S- really I didn't see it at all during the simulation.wonder why..

M-U were really horrible you know..no initiative, no team-work, no creativity (and on and on)..

B-Ma'am I think I did quite well..I helped in making the wall hanging, the bandana..then I made the box thinking of it as a jewelry-box..ultimately the grp decided to market it as an ash-tray..and I went along with the decision..(teamwork 4 u)

M-That was an absolutely stupid decision../S-U should have known we would reject it/M-U were lucky we gave u another chance to remarket it/S-u have no individuality../M-Yes u always surrender your opinion to others/S- So why should we take u?

I WAS LIKE ..

(Believe me u would have to be there to see the perfect co-ordination in the slaughter.it was like they could read each others' minds.)

B-Sir that's teamwork..the focus I believe is on working as a grp..u accept the team's decision even though u may not personally agree...it was a grp task after all.

M & S-After 5 mins of telling me no dat's not the case..like u need to stamp ur individuality strongly..and finally convncing me altogether that i completely flunked the simulation..move on)

S-(like a satisfied cat after drawing first blood )-So tell me do u have any special interests (on which i can maul u )

B-current affairs sir..i try to follow the developments in different parts of the world....read the newspapers of several countries.try to research a little on the trends..(WHY DID I SAY RESEARCH?)

S-reallyy..ok so let's talk abt wat research have u done recently..abt any incident that happened recently.

B-well if we discuss the shoe-throwing incident at Home Minister Chidambaran yesterday...i think it's regrettable that a man of public office was humiliated in this fashion..only goes to show abt our rising intolerance..

S-wat intolerance r u talking abt huh?we have always been like this...and we r talikng abt current affairs not chronicling past trends..

B-yes sir and only goes to prove how influential developments in other countries can have an impact on us n today's globalised world...this is a pattern continuing which first began with.

S(interrupting)-EVERYBODYY knows dat..tell something new..

B-Yes sir.but if u look at the developments u will see we indians did have a respect for public servants..i mean the man is a minister..and the issues raised cud have been communicated a little differently.

S-Nonsense we have always felt like dat abt politicians.(huh? )

B-But Sir he is not really a typical politician.he has a clean image.from all accounts he is trying hard to improve the nation's security as well.and the CBI is an autonomous agency.not under his control..

S-he was sidestepping the issue..it was perfectly justified.

B- but that's wat i am saying the man is a journalist..he is supposed to remain neutral..he shud simply give the facts and let the public decide...

S-nonsense (a wide-ranging rebuttal of all my points which included all sorts of politically-incorrect comments ranging from temper of sikhs,we r ruled by an italian, etc ..it's better not to give them all here in case somebody takes offence..the tactic i think was to make me make a mistake and say something stupid)

M-Which newspaper did the journalist belong to?

B-The Dainik Jagran, Ma'am

S-So anyway u absolutely haven't told us anything new.no research at all.nothing.

M-I will give u 30 secs to talk abt the situation in pakistan.

S-and tell some actual research here

B-I explain the situation carefully.and end wih saying the way things are unravelling there it could fall to the Taliban in 6 months..

S-how do u know?/M-Don't u think they are stronger than this?/S-Itna easy hai kya ek desh ko tor dena ke bat kar rahe ho..(sarcastic )

B-Ma'am,Sir maybe not..but wat do u do when they themselves live in denial and don't recognize the threat.

S-How do u know that they live in denial?/M-yes all u are telling is wat the indian media has told u/S-and that is simply recycled material from the western media/S-and it's a western conspiracy theory/M-do not believe everything they tell u..

B-Ma'am i also look at the pak newspapers like the Frontier Post, the Dawn, etc.u will be surprised to know the level of paranoia they have abt india..no really grt concern abt taliban..but a tendency to blame india abt everythin.even with the case of Sri Lankan cricketers.

M-they shud know best abt their own country..

S-u actually do no research..and u haven't said anything new at all....just the extremist panicky theory that is a product of western +indian media garbage.

M-i will give u 30 secs to talk abt some real research/S-and make it original dis tym.

B-(arre i am a hi-fi research think-tank kya )-mam abt pak?

M-abt anything u like

B (boldly)-ok we can talk abt the N-deal.how the Left-concerns have been justified and and we have really signed away our right to N-testing..or maybe the finacial crisis.

S(interested)-tell abt the financial crisis

B-ok.u see this new optimism here that indian economy will recover very quickly and so will the world in 1-2 years.i think it's misplaced (not really ).it is bcoz of the dynamics of the us-china relations.china has invested it's trade surpluses in us securities.and now in order to raise money for it's stimulus program us is printing new money.so effectively the dollar's value will reduce and china's trillion-dollar assets will be wiped out.and this will lead to tensions betweeen nations and the conditions are like exactly the aftermath of the great depression 1929..which led to WW2.

Pause for a few secs(possibly stunned by my outrageous comments)

M-ok/S-hmm i see (phew!no questions?)/S-but that was also recycled from the newspapers..not really original..

M-ok well now let's now talk abt HR/S-yes why HR?/M-the way i see it u wud be a gud analyst/S-yes u wud be better suited being a journalist/M-u r not suited for HR/S-yes why did u choose this line? (SOMEBODY )

B-beginning with something abt how i see it as a field with untapped potential..how it has the promise of a goldmine.how it integrates several challenging functions and is a multi-disciplinary science..

M(interrupting)-o plz not any coaching institute lines.

B-start to deny

S-come on tell us why hr?why not say, marketing?

B (by now resigned to my fate)-marketing involves products..the selling, promoting, advertising of products..and it's gud if u have conviction in them..but in the course of ur job u will have to deal with many bad products.in which u yourself don't believe.how can u convince customers then?.speaking for myself i feel conviction in wat u do is very important.some people have a natural charisma bcoz of which they can cloak their feelings and bluff..i can't be like them..

S-(triumphantly)-Ah but hr also involves good peole and bad people.just like products.how will u find conviction in them?

B-No sir that's the difference..i don't think there is any 'bad' people..for me the conviction abt people's abilities come naturally..there are people who utilise their abilities and some who under-utilise it..but each and every one of them has potential.u just have to find some way to understand their needs and motivate them.to unlock their potential...

S-but human needs are similar..

B-no actuallly i believe that there are 5 categories of human needs according to maslow..

S-Don't go there.(=>if u do we will kill u )

B(chastened)-ok sir..

S-ok so tell me wat difference is there in the skills reqd for marketing and hr.

B-Well actually i believe there r certain similarities between the skills reqd for marketing and hr..both involve having excellent communication skills.marketing requires u to have an outgoing personality..an inner charisma..hr i believe requires a patient, sympathetic, tactful, unassuming personality..good listening skills..

(S after incredulously looking at me for a few seconds turns to M and exchange grins)

S(in bengali)-all right..i think he is useless..nothing can be made out of him really.just have some adda(bhasad) with him and let him go..
M(smiling in bengali)-yes after all a bengali boy is gud for some adda only right?..

(I go red-faced but continue smiling and look down)

M-btw dat wasn't a racist comment or anything..since we ourselves r both bengalis.

B(hastily)-of course ma'am i understood that.

M-so tell me wat changes have u made to yourself in recent years?

B (wat really?)-well i have grown more observant, a little more cynical and wiser to..

S(interrupting)-all right tell me how many chairs did u observe in the room behind u?

B(after thinking carefully)-Sir 6

S(grinning)-it's 19..look behind u

(indeed it was..there were 12 chairs against the 2 walls on either side..but placed so close to each other and covered with velvet that i had thought them to be 2 long sofas instead of chairs)

B-I apologize sir.

S-koi baat nahi (phew! really?)

M- so tell me 3 functions of hr

B-Ma'am recrutiment (She starts writing down on a piece of copy),performance appraisal and

M(interrupting)-conducting the pa is an hr's job?

B-yes ma'am.

M-isn't that a very inefficient system?conducting appraisal of every employee?

B(hesitating)-well i believe there's a concept of line hr ma'am.where every department has it's own hr function

S-line hr is there only in some companies..but r u sure hr conducts p.a.?or he designs the pa system?

B-yes he does that also..but that's a cyclical task..like once in a few years...that's actually a more challenging task..since.
S-AH HA!...now don't change the subject! ...so hr doesn't conduct the PA?.right?

B-well yes i believe he does..actually i believe that has some advantages...if u do the PA by a 3rd person.he is neutral.free from prejudices.

M-but then wat does the project manager does?

B-ma'am he makes sure that employees work according to eadlines.stay within targets, etc.

M-but then he must keep a report of the employees' performance.

B-yes he should.

M-so where does HR come then?.

B-well i believe that report is considered during p.a..but along with that it's necessary to consider other prarameters.

M-such as?

B-well i believe that one of them can be talikng to the empoyee's co-workers,subordinates,etc. to know the attitude of-

S-(angrily)-Ah yes..listening to gossip sounds like such a gud idea.

B(grinning )-Sir like i said that can only be one of the parameters for evaluation.

S-let me tell you your every assumption is incorrect, and based on this u r coming for hr?so u shudn't come right?u shud re-evaluate your decision..

B-Sir even if i am wrong in some respects i believe that my basics r correct.and that i would really be able to use my skill-sets to do justice to the job.

S-no i don't think so..u r not 100% sure.go home & re-evaluate..

B-Sir sometimes you just have to follow your instincts.it's difficult to be 100% sure.however i believe that with the best of inputs available to you all you can do is consider all aspects thoroughly and take a matured decision.as i have.and for evaluation purposes you are there.as the faculty of one of the best b-schools of the country u can judge me & decide whether i will make a good fit or not..and i will respect your decision.

M-tell me do u believe that fear/punishment is a motivator in performance?

B-No ma'am i believe that it causes too many negative effects like stress to act as true motivator.

S()-See u can believe in a lot of things..doesn't mean that u r right.for example i also believe that i am the most handsome person in the room but.(what?..)

B-U r not wrong sir..

S-No no don't..(without completing the sentence he guffaws..ma'am laughs,i grin -happy to break the tension for once)

S-so one last question to u finally..relate your graduation to hr.

B-blah blah blah.some long-winded explanation abt how my training as an i.t. engineer will mean that if i go back to the i.t. industry as hr personnel i will be able to understand employees' technical problems.etc.

S(interrupting)-dats a really lame answer/M-don't give a coaching insti line/S-i will give u one more chance..think for 30 seconds and then reply.

B(desperately thinking)-Well Sir i have done my graduation in Information Technology and

Both Interrupt..S again starts to say something disgustedly ..I desperately speak over them (thak gaye the yaar )

Sir I ultimately believe Graduation is unrelated to HR..
(and now the sudden transformation...both of them laugh and gleefully clap )
S-that was exactly wat we wanted you to say.(I was like what the ..!..)
B(protesting)-But..

S-ok we r done thank u..

B-Thank u ma'am,thank u sir..it's been an honour..

M(laughing)-All the best..

(total time acc to frnd waiting outside-20 mins)

VERDICT-CONVERTED
(gyaan-just be yourself!....and have fun)
