Re: [2009-2011] TAPMI GD/PI Experiences - 19-03-2009, 12:21 AM

Just reached Delhi from Mangalore ,I had my GD/PI on 17th(yesterday)

I reached rather early at TAPMI campus, 7 AM ; only to find myself the first one there . The ride up the hill in the morning , with the college campus looming in the horizon is really something.Auto charges from the hotel in Udupi (Sriram Residency " Rs. 506/- per day) to TAPMI = Rs. 130/-.

The process starts at 8:45 am with a PowerPoint presentation on TAPMI. As soon as you reach the campus, there are three computers where one needs to enter the TAPMI registration number (it is there on your call letter, at the bottom); which gives you the rooms where you have to appear for the GD /PI.

Each panel (there about 6-7 panels) consists of about 19-20 candidates. Each panel itself gets divided into sub-groups. The first round may either may be the "Written ability" round where an abstract topic is given , and you have to write for 15 minutes; or it may be the GD (depending on which sub-group you are of that panel). Our essay topic was "tears dry quicker than anything"

10 minutes for preparation of GD topic, and 20 minutes of GD. Our topic was "Can Obama revive the US economy". The other GD topic of the day was :"Coaliation politics is the way ahead for India" (or words to the effect, I don't recall the exact wording)

Now, if you are in first sub-group of the panel; your PI starts immediately after the GD ; so you can expect for it to be finished by 2 PM( there is Rs.10/ coupon which you can buy from the admissions office on ground floor to get a ride on the college bus upto Manipal town after your process gets over).

For the second sub-group, the interview starts at 2:30 PM ; and so the last of the members in the group can expect it to go till about 4:30 PM or so. So , one will not reach Manipal before 5 PM in that case.

For the PI, whatever you spoke in the GD is quizzed upon :I was quizzed upon all the economic jargon which I had used in the GD : discretionary spending, origins of recession , how Finland got affected and not India, what role has RBI been doing, what are the macroeconomic indicators , how is inflation calculated, name Indian companies having six sigma ; what is the mathematical foundation for a sigma ( had to explain using the bell curve), difference between analytics and statistics , does India have a true laissez faire economy, what is SaaS(software as a service) and its use; I was asked about a web project I did in sixth semester of engineering (after the interview panel went through my semester marksheets)[and this is going back in time , as I have 3 years of work-ex ] about how a search engine can be implemented in TAPMI and what keywords and hardware will be used.

Last question was asked was whether I can wake up again after all these years woeking at 6 am to study.

My process got over by 3:45 pm ; and I was in Manipal by about 4:30 PM.

Now for folks who need to go to Mangalore from Manipal: choose the "Express" buses which really run fast ; and you reach Mangalore inner city by about 6 pm.

Now Mangalore inner city is far away from the airport, but if you need a lodge to stay overnight, the final stop of those buses at Mangalore bus stand has plenty of lodges (my room rate was 200/- per night; TV and attached bath; one can catch bus # 47 to Mangalore airport from there if one is going by flight:the time taken from Mangalore inner city bus stand to airport is about 1 hr and 20 minutes)

Best of luck to the ones who venture out for the GD/PI in the coming days.

Don't even bother about GD/PI if you write your essay with even a single word with the spellings above.

anyways, your interview will completely depend on the panel and their mood. If you are a mechanical engineer, and you end up with our Ops professors, then make sure you know everything from carnot cycle to latest engine designs. TAPMI is known to ask a lot of academic related questions, nevertheless Work ex and Stress interviews are also becoming more common these days. If your subject knowledge is good, then eventually the interview will become a good experience. Cheer

Hey ! Not penning down an experience but some 'friendly advice'. Payments for the same can be made to us on arrival. The source and trigger points are the interview process that have happened over 3 days

1. (Gentle ??)Men - It makes a lot of sense to wear a "formal" shirt and tie while appearing for an interview, Dont land up wearing whatever you wore while traveling to Manipal.

2. Men - When asked why you arent wearing a tie, it is not a good answer to say "If current students can attend class in casual Shirts, Why cant I". Leave the wise cracks for later !

3. All interviews need not be stress ! But if it does happen so be it ! Dont get hyper (and end up stressing your self more)

4. For the question on What they look for in a stress interview, Am sorry I wish I knew !

5. Use the TAPMI bus to Manipal, Autos are not required !

6. I look forward to the treats of the tasty Bun/Maggi/Pineapple Juice. PS TAPMI Outsources its canteen needs, Praising it will do little for your interview chances !! Thanks all the same !

Re: [2009-2011] TAPMI GD/PI Experiences - 19-03-2009, 04:45 PM

My GD/PI experience..

came to manipal on 17th march.. the place is simply BEAUTIFUL.. spent a relaxed day n half and then got geared up for the D-day..

TAPMI NEW CAMPUS rocks.. forgot to get my cam..

The Process : Ppt for 15 min about the adm process and some questions were asked by students regarding weightage of different components..

Essay - my sub-panel had 8 ppl.. topic was "Even a distance of thousand miles begins with a single step"... my essay didnt have many words.. about 220.. but content was good.. or so i think.. i would give myself 7.5/10

GD - this was my fav part.. the GD process was simply WONDERFUL.. all of us got a chance to voice our views.. it was pretty smooth.. wee bit of digressions tha.. but on the whole.. 10/10

PI - i have a thin frame so first question was.. did u eat anything? u look like u have been hungry for 4 days..

now comes the frying.. no questions on why mba, why switch from mechanical engg to IT or anything like that... it was very abstract.. asked about ops research mostly.. and tht was the only subj i didnt know well.. kept saying "err.. i dont remem" or " i think this is the solution" .. dont know whether to call it a stress interview.. the panel were relaxed and friendly.. smiling and even asked whether they were making me tensed.. asked me about my dad's field of work.. would your fiance let u stay away for two years? do u like manipal?

many guys were quizzed on acads.. they are dwelling deep into some subjects.. CDMA, GSM stuff.. some were asked about their work experience, economic crisis.. all i can say that no two interviews were the same.. no standard stuff reg mba..

last but not the least... the pineapple juice is AWESOME.. canteen is nice and spacious.. maggi was what i had for lunch..

sriram, balesh and maneesh... what say guys? i am a little worried about the interview.. i didnt know many questions and honestly i hadnt heard of them in my course (ops research).. is that going to be detrimental?

Atb to all the others who are not yet done with their interviews..

The Stress Interviews aren't really pot-shots in the dark...

Seeing doubts expressed over the stress intvws at TAPMI, I think that the interview panels are doing it with a purpose. With me as well as few others on the 18th, I found that they knew how to hit a raw nerve with each applicant no matter how confident each of us were. Whether I am competent or no is another matter, but the Professor sure knew how to hit a nerve or two. Humbled I am, even though I tried to convince him about my competence.
Cheers!

Don't worry, chill and keep your fingers crossed. Last year I spoke just 2 lines in my GD and extempore was just ok. Interview was also not too good but eventually i got in. The panel will check your cat score, acads, essay, gd and interview. so don't worry too much. who knows they might have liked something about your approach

And regarding canteen and juice, I really hope you get through .

Keep your fingers crossed man. You never know with these interviews. Depends entirely on how the panel perceived you. But looking at the way you've given yourself scores in the essay and GD, looks like you'll pass through.

ATB man!
