Seniors,
till now with all the experiences on PG and from my personal contacts,
it seems IIM S is infact having very gruelling PI's.
Gruelling in the sense that anything under the sun is being asked.
Please guide us a bit more on what you people faced last year and how to handle ques you have no idea about?

last year it was similar in nature. whole point here is the interview is exhaustive I would say rather than gruelling. If a person dont know something, it starts becoming grueling for him/her(in their perception). Whatever experiences I have gone through and read mostly people are saying why the hell they r asking me this.

Tell me why they should not ask that.. Mostly the ques r being asked from ur domain area only. May b the way people are presenting here its sounding that its so bad. but on hindsight if u see most of the things make sense.

I agree that some questions may b out of the picture but those "some" ques points out whether u just answer for the heck of it.

Honesty is the keyword. stick to what u knw and what u dont and if u dont know politely say that.. dont just beat around the bush.

Life in any IIM is very very rigorous that I have come to know after experiencing it and even when u move to Job. The respect and reliability factor with an IIM grad is too high.. which u will later discover .call it underlying 'X' factor or whatever.. this has to be tested which was done last year too.

As a guideline just be careful what u say. and if u had any subject related to mgmt do go through the basics. and if u dont know something just admit it and dont feel bad about that or get nervous. they also know u r just at entrant level. stability if very much reqd and if u maintain ur coolness, I dont see any factor coming between u n ur admit

Last year even those who had hobby of dancing ,singing..etc were infact made to do so in interview hall..

also if u see many of Ques are repeated in other interviews. SO u have multiple calls it wld help if they come prepared with previous interview Qs and Ans... many Qs will come which tests the attitude of the person..so best way is keep that smile of urs shining. Just take it as an intelligent conversation. trust me all that pressure build up happens thinking alot about interview moreover thinking m going to face IIM profs

All the best

I actually not in favour of spamming the GD/PI experience thread, but out of curiosity I am doing so. If I am not wrong, then there have been many GD/PI experiences till now. Then why is that so less experiences there in the thread, that too 2 posted by our own diablorulez........I met almost 6 guys who were PG members during my GD/PI. Please post ur experiences, be it good or bad. The way u were benefitted by last yrs experiences, our next batch will be helped by ours. ELse the whole purpose of having this thread is not served.

Cheerz!

Topic: Same as the one asked in some another location
Mr Chandu was a cleaner in a company and had a driving experience of 15 years He has been loyal to the company and because of his courteous nature popular among people Recently he got a driving license .The officials seeing his diligence in his work decided to promote him as company MD’s chauffeur.

He used to do his work meticulously but he has to sometime stretch his work as he was often called even in the wee hours to drop MD or late nights to pick him up. This actually put him under stress. One day similar such incident happened and instead of returning back to office , he returned to home. This was against company’s rule as once the vehicle is taken out of the premise of the company has to be returned or informed to concerned authorities. He, due to stress thought shall return back the vehicle the very next day as he knew that other drivers used to do the same and flouted company’s rules.
But meanwhile he hit a girl child and a case was filed against him by the victim’s parents .The company’s official also came to know about this and started digging out the matter. Though the court exempted him from punishment but the officials took it seriously. Enquiry was ordered and the official suggested termination from employment.

Being the MD what would be your decision?

I want to ask what certis the profs are looking forward to see? Are they checking whatever we write in the interview form? In my case, I've got school 2nd in 10th, but we werent given any certi, we just compared it within ourselves and it was a fact known to the school, but no certi to support now. So, if i mention that in my interview form, will i be asked to produce the supporting doc?

Re: [2009-2011]IIM Shillong GD/PI Experiences - 04-04-2009, 07:40 AM

Bangalore 2.00pm 3rd April 2009
My profile
CAT: 99.95%ile
X-std:96.96%
XII-std-92.83%
Grad:9.38CGPA
Calls: BLACKIS
Work-ex: Almost 2 years

GD: They give a case and we get 5 mins to think about the case. 15 minutes for discussion and the next 5 mins for writing the summary

Case details: There is a farming community called beris. They have been cultivating groundnuts in some region for a long time. 30 years ago a herder community came into the area and they were grazing animals on some unused land. There was some water hole also. Some people of the herder community settled there and started growing vegetables. Things were fine b/w herders and the farmers. Now government is planning an irrigation project which will provide irrigation to the unused land. So both the communities want to claim the unused/unregistered land. The beris(farmers) think that they can grow cash crops. The herders also want the land since they have been using it for more than 30 years.
To settle land disputes like this/to give unregistered land away to villagers govt has established rural councils. Rural coucils have a reputation of being unfair and favouring vested interests. What should the herders do?

Basically we(the group) did not have too much knowledge about such rural issues. There was no fight and we easily came to simple consensues.

Interview: My interview was a long one for about 35 minutes.
Many things were asked. I would only like to describe some of the questions.

Electronics: (Turned out to be like an IISc interview rather than an IIM interview)
  1. Draw clipper, clamper circuits
  2. What are the characteristics of an Operational Amplifer
  3. Nyquist sampling theorem
  4. Why is silicon used over germanium
  5. What are the different semiconductor substrates (Silicon, Germanium, Gallium Arsenide etc)
  6. What are the band gap voltages of silicon and germanium
  7. What is an analog computer. Draw the circuit for that.
Economy:
  1. How does economic crisis in US affect India
  2. Tell 2 main problems facing India
  3. What is the cause of financial crisis
  4. Asked about G-20 meet
General:
  1. Questions about my address. (I live in Basavanagudi in Bangalore). tell me about the area in which you live. What is the history of the area?
  2. Rank the IIMs in order of your preference
History(I had told in the form that I read history):
  1. Describe the civil war in Rome.
  2. Tell about Nero the roman emperor.
  3. How does the term "cross the rubicon" come from?
  4. Who is atilla the hun?
Career Goals:
What do you want to do after MBA? I told consulting? Which area in consulting etc etc

It was the most exhaustive interview I have been through. I was fully tired.
The interview season has ended finally. Looking forward to the results

My advice: Interviewers have a lot of time in IIM-Shillong interview since many of them do not turn up. Interviews are going to be long. Those who serious aspirants must prepare throughly. In academics or work exp or anything for that matter.

I would also like to thank the seniors for their efforts in guiding the call getters.I feel that IIM shillong seniors were the most proactive of all the IIM mentors. For many days every morning I check my mail and I find the daily news digest or other important information from the mentors. To be honest I did not interact with any of the IIM shillong seniors but I am sure they would have gone out of their way to help.

As written in the call letter, attested photocopies of the marksheets are needed. Dont take any such chances and get it attested.. it can be done by gazetted officers, doctors, or principal of ur college. U can definitely get the former two professionals easily. As already we are seeing tough interviews, we should not compound our problems and get things done as much as we can. Hope it helps.

From the people who have already attended interviews of IIM-S, please let us know how many in your group have turned up from the alloted total no of students.
