Asia Bschool Rankings - 13-09-2002, 06:28 PM

Hello All Take a look at the Asian Bschool Rankings.

Interesting point to note is that there are 4 IIM's in the top 20

ASSESSING THE BEST
The Asia Inc 2002 Business School Survey is based upon questionnaires sent to the most prominent business schools in the Asia-Pacific
region. This year a record 62 schools responded.
The survey is based on three criteria: faculty resources, student quality and academic reputation.
FACULTY RESOURCES
The depth of faculty resources was gauged by assessing:
• The student-teacher ratio
• The number of full-time equivalent staff
• The proportion of staff who are full-time, as evidence of long-term commitment of staff to MBA teaching
• The proportion of staff holding Phds
• The number of years experience of staff in either teaching MBAs or in senior management positions
• The proportion of staff who have qualified at leading international universities
• The collaboration of the school with leading international business schools

I would not rate a top institute on the basis of its ROI. It would form a part of the consideration, but not something that I would explicitly base my decision on.

Look at the average salaries at the IIMs. Frankly the average salaries are not stunning at all. At IIM A it was close to 5.2/pa. Although it was an average and not the mean, we can still safely say that half of them were above 5 & half below 5. Not really inspiring after having slogged at the best school for close to 2 years.

In India, the IIMs have very good brand value. Abroad, only IIM A, B & C exist. However on an Asia Pacific rating scheme, the other schools are way more international that IIM B & C.

ROI wise , IIMs rule.
But not on all the other counts.

Regards,

hummmm doesnt that sound a bit too existentialist... dont tell me that u wanna go to a top B school just coz u wanna experience that or u have always felt a Tom Peters inside u.....
i think they are like an assembly line finishing products ready for global market (although some may still not sell . )

see i think main crieterion for comparison shud be..

1) placements (of course..... ROI factor ultimately)
2) kinda exposure it affords u (again depends on alumni/industry interface/location etc)
3) networking u can do there....

and except factor 2 above... i guess iims figure above all those listed in that list..... anf add to that the kinda hell u have to go thru if u have to study in a class of iim kinds...i think thats wat tilts the scale in their favor..
though i shud accept my limited knowledge abt other schools listed in that list on those parameters.....

wat say ya ?

About my decision on choosing a bschool based on the ROI, that was my statement.

LOL. Didn't Tom Peters call MBA's IDIOTS

I don't want to join a Bschool so that it shows me some direction in my career. The direction already exists for me. For me, it should be able to leverage my current situation and then enable me to take a larger leap. Else its not worth much to me.

A Bschool is an experience. But my choice would be different after a few years time. In terms of the IIM's contributing to my career, if I join after a few years, its not going to be worth what the global top bschools can offer.

We have freshers in the IIM's with barely zero or 2 years work ex and 90% of them are softies. That is not the variety I would appreciate being with if I am 25-28 years old.

This one is based on your current experience I'd presume. IIM's prefer quant jocks most of the time and this is not an unknown fact. Do the admission committee consider you as a complete candidate ? The answer is NO. Having talked to many IIM alumni, you can be almost assured that 80% of the weightage goes to your CAT scores. So score stunningly well in the CAT and your can enter the IIM's without any much of a hassle.

The only variant of this case happened this year at IIM-B. Almost all of them had substantial work experience and the weightage for the CAT scores were <guessed> to be around 40%. Balance going to the depth of your work experience and your projection as a person fit for a top bschool.

SPOT on pal.
Why do IIM - A grads go to Wharton after having completed their PG at IIM - A ? Trust me, they are not the Tom Peters type. The ROI you point out , varies. At different stages in your career, the ROI factor will change and accordingly you'd choose a Bschool.

At this point in my career, I would not be able to leverage nor handle a global business degree from a TOP Bschool. But, that might not be the case after a few years. At that time, I'd agree that the IIM's provide excellent value for money. But will it take me places ? That is suspect.
