Hey everyone..Had my IMT GD-PI today..My first ever B-School GD-PI..

GD/PI center: IMT Ghaziabad
GD/PI (date & time): 14 Feb., 08:30 am

GD/PI experience:

Registration happened first, verification of the marksheets.

About 90 people, divided into 6 groups of 15 members each.

GD:

We were seated around a table with numbers from 1 to 15 written in front.
Panel moves in..

Person from the industry - P1
Experienced, old, IMT faculty- P2
Lady, IMT faculty - P3

P2 introduces the panel, briefs about the GD process.

One envelope to be chosen from two. We choose one, open it, candidate 1 reads out the topic.

Topic : The one lakh car should be banned in India.

P2 : Are you all comfortable with the topic?
All : Yes.

P2 : You all have 5 minutes to think and 10 minutes to discuss. After that each candidate will be given 1 minute to express his/her views.

Provided rough sheets, bell rings..
At the end of 5 minutes, another bell rings, GD starts..

GD:

Average group performance, not a fish market but due to the time constraint everyone just wanted to speak and not listen to anyone else's points. One guy spoke for about the complete 10 minutes , not caring that no one was actually listening to him.
Content wise it was good, various points came up for and against the ban.

bell rings. Told that we have 1 minute to give our points, starting with speaker no. 1.
After that we are given a sheet on which we had to write the summary of the discussion in 150 words.Time given for this was 5 minutes.
Sheets collected, the rough sheets given for the GD were also taken back.
We were told to wait outside in a hall.

In the hall:

Seniors invited us to ask questions about IMT. Few people asked questions. Discussion lasted 15 minutes. PIs start.

PI:

My number was 4. Short interviews. 10-12 minutes on average.
My turn came in 35-40 minutes.
Same panel as GD.

Enter, Good morning n all..

P2: so its_just_begun, can you tell us something about yourself..
Me: blah blah.. mentioned about being in the final year, P2 asks when are my final exams..
P2: so why IMT?
Me: something about IMT, mentioned faculty..
P2: do you know any famous faculty at IMT..
Me: :(
P2: Ok tell me two nobel prize winners from India
Me: told
P2: what is green house?
Me: told
P2: is it good or bad?
Me: told(bad..)
P2: then why is it called 'green'?
Me: :(
P2: can you tell me the constituents of green-house gases?
Me: :(
P2 asks P1 to ask something.

P1: tell me about your hobbies
Me: told
P1: ok

P3: (smiles) what is CMRR?
Me: some crap wrong answer.:icon_frown:
P3: (smiles) What modulation is used in TV?
Me: :(
P3: (He is hopeless look :( but still smiling) What motivates you..
Me: Told about my goal basically..

P2: You watch movies? Which is the last one you watched?
Me: Sir, Luck by chance..
P2: which?
P1: (smiles) luck by chance, its a latest movie

P2: okay, thank you..
Me: thank 'em all

Thats it, I guess it was even lesser than 10 minutes.
In totality, avg GD (6/10) and avg PI (5/10)

time 8 min followed by one minute monologue

when the bell rang no wanted to volunteer but some boy after few seconds started.
it was average gd me pitched in few times rating 6/10.

now comes the most philosophical interview.
p1=faculty male
p2=fculty female
p3= outsider

m=me

p3= asked me how will i approach a voyage fom india to north america
m=answered.
p3= drft calculation in various water and how it is affected
m=beat ard bush
tis whole continued for 15 minutes.

p2=define ignorance is bliss:confused:
m= gve some reply the more u r knoeledgeble the more cheating method u will devise the less u wont do it gave satyam exam.

p3= tonnes of loyalty is better than tonnes of cleverness
m=phew explained with some xample.

First batch, arrived at 8:15, smartly dressed in a business suit looking kickass . I had a look around the campus, seemed nice. Went into the hall, second floor, some people were already present, had a seat. Looked around the hall, shook my head with pity on the candidates present.:tongue: Bechare faltu me hi aa gaye hain yaha pe, lena to mujhe hi hai IMT walo ne. :cool2:

Finally, the lists were put on, I was in the 4th Group (Panel #4). My lucky number 4!

15 of us were marched into the hall, with a U-shaped table and were seated according to our serial numbers. I was seated at the corner of the U, a BIG disadvantage as I found out later. We then waited for like 20 minutes waiting for the panel. We started talking, making jokes, light hearted comments & promises (false, frigging false promises) that nobody would shout and we would not create a fish market (we did'nt, we went to make something even bigger :new_Llol

The panel finally came (3 Sirs, two faculty & one industry).

We were given 2 topics to choose from -

a) 1 Lakh car should be banned
b) India is less vulnerable to economic recession.

First signs of a fish market started showing. All those light & polite voices got loud and aggressive. I suggested to the group that we do a vote. 13 hands went up for the support of the first one. I supported the second topic to be discussed, but found support with only one other guy. We went with the first. :(

We were given around 2 minutes to gather our thoughts & then the bell rang signalling the start of the GD.

Mayhem, chaos, apocalypse!! 5-6 people simultaneously started the GD at the top of their voices, but the nature took it's course and only 1 continued (with the loudest voice ). I watched in frustration as my brain tried to understand what the **** was going on! At any moment, there were 3-4 people shouting at the top of their voices. I even took out time to curse the Lord for not giving me a super loud throat. I cleared my throat, shouted as hard as I could and made 3-4 points, which I doubt were heard by anyone but me.

I could gather nothing from the GD apart from knowing who had the loudest voice. :new_Llol: Only got hold of a few big points because everything else was consumed by the noise. The bell rang again & the GD ended. We were then given 1 minute each to summarize, which we did. Did'nt add any new points because the panel had clearly mentioned 'summarize'.

We were then given a sheet to write the GD summary. I thought this would be the saviour! As I started searching for the biggest & most hard to spell words I could find in my vocabulary to impress the panel, the time finished & the sheet was taken away.

The GD was over, I looked at my 'groupmates', everyone content with the chaos they created. :angry:

It was time for PI and I had to wait for half an hour before my turn came. I thought I'd work my charm in the PI.

There were 3 guys, I'd call them B (Bearded fella), P (Pissed off fella, most probably industry guy) and S (The I-dont-give-a-shit fella), and Me- yours truly.

Me (walked in) : Good morning, sirs. (with a big smile)
P - Abbissek..hmm..
B - Introduce yourself..
Me- Blah blah blah...I never prepared an answer for that, jo aaya mu me woh bol diya..and I ended up making a bollywood type statement at the end..

P - What is your favourite subject? Electronics or Communication?
Me - (Sirjee Btech me percentage to dekh lo! Favourite subject kaha se hoga mera!! ) Communication, Mobile communication..Yehi aata hai thoda bahut..

(Now here comes the pain)
P - Have you heard about TCP/IP?
Me - Yes..blah blah..(full form ) Bas aur mat poochna!!

P - What are the seven different layers?
Me - could recollect only 4..

P - Put them in order & explain their functions..
Me - BLANK! :confused: Calmly...I don't remember, Sir. Maarlo jitni maarni hai..ab to aadat ho gayi hai..

P - This will be your only technical question if you answer it.
Me - Nai aata to kaha se baku..Blank..I'm sorry, I don't remember..with a embarassing smile

B - Have you heard of Switch circuits?
Me - :confused: Yeh kaha se aa gaya beech me?

B - How would you minimize a Switch cirtuit without using K maps & logical gates?
Me - Some ulta shulta gyan about Mesh, Star topology and Kirchoff's laws..

B - not impressed..No No, I'm talking about a switch circuit..How do you minimize it?
Me - :confused: (Is this an M.Tech interview??)


B - What are the 14 rules of Boolean algebra?
Me - kaunse rules?? Muttered something...

B - ..Some gyan about Boolean algebra...

S - What is Moore's Law?
Me - :confused: Ho gaya balatkaar..Disaster..I don't know, Sir.

B - You can leave please..
Me - Even bigger smile, thank you sirs. I hope you had fun.

Strange interview..They did'nt ask me so many technical questions even in Accenture's technical round!! Main Mtech karne thode na aaya tha!! No regular questions about my goal, my hobbies, why i wanted to join IMT, why i wanted to do MBA...but none of that..Ab 61% wale se acads poochoge to kya jawab milega?

I think they are'nt looking for street smart guys, they're looking for university toppers..An 8 pointer in my class might have answered all their queries but then he got a CAT percentile of 80%, may be he'd have a better chance at IMT..:new_Llol:

All in all, disastrous GD/PI for me, totally unexpected..Ripped me apart completely.. I don't think I am not good enough for IMT, I certainly am, but may be I should have prepared better..

TIPS -

1) Don't expect that your GD will not turn into a fish market, believe me, you're in for a surprise.
2) If you don't know an answer in PI, say I don't know, don't beat around the bush & give them more stuff to grill you on.

A few of the candidates added their own points & even added a conclusion which was not to be done since the panel had clearly said that you had to summarize the GD, and it was not a monologue.

I have same profile so i was bit concerned cos i m not preparing computer networks for interview.
