behind the screen, it is similar in the sense that there are particles
in a fluid or gas which create the image when excited.
Why is it called plasma?
I think it should be from some greek word sir. Most blood components
are named from greek words.

What do you have in your teeth?
Braces. Long explanation.
So if you put them for 10 years your teeth will go totally inside?
No they adjust the tension. In fact in my case wires are not to push the teeth back.
Is it very tight?
No sir they adjust it as required, else I will have a lot of pain eating.
So there is lot of engineering in this?
Yes sir there is as they have to adjust everything rightly.
Dentistry is engineering?
Sir Orthodontics involves engineering…but other branches such as

Mentioned about NGOs with whom i worked and leadership skills which led to discussion on leadership in PI

CAT score : 98.37 (Reason for single call !)

GD : 10 people participating. All were active except couple of them who spoke very less.No fish market not much cross cutting.
Topic : A management institute is celebrating its annual fest. They have three bands whom they can invite. But all the students are split over which one to call and each band has 1/3rd votes by students. How should they decide which one to invite.

5 mins to think, 15 to discuss.

Scope was very wide could have included lot of points. I didn’t start intentionally. I usually prefer the 2nd slot to speak, so grabbed it here. Gave a lot of points initially. Also people were allowing me to speak at will  After around 10 mins it seemed everyone is out of points and no one was venturing to speak anything. So yours truly took the challenge and gave not so intelligent point of considering the base city of bands and how much will it cost to transport and keep at campus Amazingly all found it so interesting that it could lead to a discussion for 5 more mins presenting an impression that people are full of ideas here.

Overall I would rate myself somewhere around 8/10 in GD. Would have given 7 myself after GD but you will find reason in PI experience for additional mark.

PI: I was 9th to be grilled. For previous 8 it was ranging from 15 mins to 40 mins. Most were grilled on maths …. Mainly stats and probability even though all of them were workex guys.

M: sir I participated in lots of debates n all. Its natural for me to talk
P1: So that’s like one step further from there. All smiles
P1:Tell me one point which didn’t make sense. Anything that is not possible that you said.
M: Sir I made all valid points. I organised fest in college so I know wat it takes for such things.
P2: No no there has to be something which is non feasible.
Me: I don’t think so sir. All were feasible solutions.
P1 has my data form and joins in P2. Asks me something must be there.
Me: (Can’t drag it any further with no no kind ans) Sir I said lets go and talk to other colleges in city which band are they calling for thr fest. So if all of us choose diff. bands then the fest crowd which is same in most cases will get to listen all bands.
P2 n P1: No you said lets have poll at all colleges …. Both have smirks like they caught me redhanded.
M: Corrected I was targeting fest co-ordinators n not the junta poll.
Both seemed okay with my ans and moved on.

P2 has my certis n P1 has data form.

P1: You seem to be inborn teacher. Why do you want to waste time in management? Go for MS n Phd. (I had mentioned my parens being teachers n my alternative career option in Edu n Research)
M: (Had prepared this ans well before) talked about importance of both n which they are most effective. Gave reasons collating it with top down and bottom up approaches of progress. Talked about my leadership skills n how important they are for me …..

P1 : So do gud leaders have to be gud managers ?
M: gave fundas about both have importance in different scenarios. How it is imp for a leader to be gud manager n vice versa.
P1: He gave some funda about leaders delegating work to managers and asked so you mean Gandhi was a gud leader and he managed lot of ppl during dandi march without any manager.
M: (inner me: Yaar yeh kya ho raha hai !! ) Sir his ideals were so strong that he never needed any manager to manage ppl. They were controlled with his ideals only.
P1: Pushed further on same issue. Put it in different words and asked same thing.
M: Gave example of narayan murthy. Said he is like Gandhi to infy . I never believed in ideals can be really implemented but he proved me to be wrong. His ideas can be seem everywhr in company which is driving it. (Now I knew wat will be his next que. So already started thinking abt it )
P1: So infy shudnt need any managers to run it. (Yeah I knew u r gonna ask it )
M: Managers have definite role in different ways. For ex. M D Pai is the reason Infy is so respected today. Had he not been there it would never have been wat it is today. So ideals alone are not all there are others things to it as well.
P1: Wat did he do ?
M: He opened up infy account books and made it all transparent.

P1 seemed totally satisfied with this duel of around 5-7 mins. But my big mouth had other plans and somewhere blurted out word ‘balance sheet’.

P1: You read infy balance sheet ?
M: (Had crammed all infy numbers ) Yes sir, but not very recently.

Then for next 1 min he gave me a lecture to make me believe that employees are not reported in balance sheet because they can’t be counted in money nos. like other ‘intangibles’ without saying the word
Like an accha baccha agreed to wat he said feeling like he is giving me gyaan.
P1: Ok when you go back read the infy balance sheet once :O:O:O

P2 was busy with my certis and didn’t pitch in much apart from couple of minor interjections.

P1: So wats your fav subject.
M: Data mining. Told about basic ideas and why do we have it n various parts in it. Was goin fine.
But he had other plans in mind. Asked me something like that is not like quantitative n all. How would you know any algo is working fine for different datas n all.
I gave some fundas and then he talked about something which I didn’t get much and ended up saying to measure you can always compare the real case algo output with ideal case and gave an example from my line of work.

By now P2 was ready to push me further.
P2: How do your frens see you as a person.
M: gave funda about ppl writing to me in yearbook that I shud go to IIM Said can mail you those comments as well. He was fine without them Also pushed in concept of being true to my name (Su+meet = gud fren). So I have lots of frens.
P2: Okay how do they see you as in advisor, motivator, supporter, …… (couple more).
M: Sir I have this bad habit of talking a lot and telling everyone wat to do so I mostly fit in role of avisor n motivator easily. (All grinning like stupids )
P1: (pitches in again) You know you can be a gud teacher. Teachers also talk a lot (oh no not again !! )
M: sir, prolly this skill of talking I got from my parens
P2: So if you talk a lot you can be prob to profs.
M: Sir IIMs believe in class discussions. Prof is actually a facilitator to coordinate discussion. So I will be gud value add to that

P2: Anything you want to ask us ?
M: No sir, I am fine thank you

No ques on hobbies though I had mentioned movies bigtime and P1 was supposedly big movie guru as he asked some deep fundas abt movies frm someone else.
P1 was mostly busy with certis though he didn’t see much of them even then. He picked up one I got in infy and spent most of time deciphering it

Well GD was more dry with a lot fo people pitching in a lil of irrelevant points at times due to dryness of the subject.

Well everyone said MBA was required and also few were talking abt teh contribution made by Manager n Entreprenuer is same to GDP n the country, also they talked abt Fields untouched in India and the need for MBA to succeed as an Entreprenuer.
Someone said Graduates make better Entreprenuers.
Also someone talked abt 1st generation entreprenuers and rest all r tough.
Someone also said Penetrating a existing market is tough.

Ppl Talked abt NRN, Naukri.com (one guy wanted to talk abt indian entreprenuers only, he spoke abt it)

Moi points:
Entreprenuer should have attitude, passion for the job and risk taking ability which can never be taught by a b-school.
I quoted Lary ellison, Google, Yahoo, Virgin, Microsoft etc to state u need not be a Grad to be an entreprenuer.
I quoted the example of Ambani's and told how they established Rel Comm, Rel Energy etc out of RIL. so entreprenuership is not only limited to 1st gen guys.
I said Virgin launched Virgin Cola in US,UK whr Coke , Pepsi r 1 n 2 and now Virgin cola is 2 in both the markets.
I said if u have a idea u can definitely approach a VC and get it funded if ur idea is real gud

Also was a watchman twice once the topic was becoming India Centric, i told it was no whr mentioned it is India alone and also Again said we r deviating frm the topic when someone said contri to the GDP.

Moi: Sure sir, start explaining my roots r from warangal and it was called Orugallu then n my surname is Oruganti and talked abt the rest of the name as well. Then he said, So u frm warangal, then i said sir my fore fathers moved to Vizag and my dad settled in Hyderbad.

P2: So, what is ur Hometown or native what ever u want to call ti as?
Moi: it is tough to find roots and i wud call myself an andhrite and an Indian but if asked to assocaite myself to a city i wud say i am a Hyderbadi as i am more linked to thr..

P2: tell me about Bihar, u studied for 5 years there.
Moi: Sir, Biharis r real gud and it is not the way the media potrays them to be. Only a few power thirst leaders play the caste trump and the whoel state gets a bad name.

P2: so u say it is total casteism; how u r going to eradicate that?
Moi: Bringing in social awareness among the people, it is tough to do it but someone must take it up and educate them about the malices etc.

P2: Will u do it, have to heard of a engg being killed in Bihar in recent past?
Moi: Well sir, few of them have been killed as they did not agree on the demands of the contractors and MLA's but it should not deter someone from doing something. If i am the one, i will take it.

P2: So, waht if u r killed?
Moi: Sir, there is risk everywhere it should not deter you frm doin something and amybe many r thinking of the same and none r soming forward; someone should start it, they why cant it b me. i will for sure if i get a chance to.

P2: U an electronics engineer, yes sir. so what is a resistor?
Moi: Foolish enuf say it is a passive device But said it functions as a load when a potential diff acts across it and has a predefined power loss depending upon factors like resistance value etc.

P2: Can a AC signal be a Analog Signal?
Moi: Yes sir, sure it can be but a very low frequency one 50-60 Hz ki hi freq hai :eh:

P2: tell me the difference between Resistor and Semiconductor?
Moi: Basic diff is we can regulate the flow of Holes/Electrons in a SemiConductor device by regulating the voltage whr as Resistor is the same always

P2: What is the use of regulated supply in Electronics & is transistor active or passive(buddu kahika mein ).
Moi: it is 3 yrs since i read them and i prepared on few topics and i really dont know at the moment why it is required.

P2: OK, lets talk about ur work, what u do @ Infosys?
Moi: Sir, i work for a mortgage lender and i do the testing of the loans locked and other business logic and rules.

P2: u work for a mortgage client Is the client still there
Moi: Client was a very safe player only into prime loans and he is really strong.

P2: how big is he?
Moi: It was 180-190 Billion one and 7th largest US Bank in October last yr.

P2: It must have fallen a lot now?
Moi: Yes sir, it will be around 110-115 billion now but still it is in top 10.

P2: is it still in profits or losses?
Moi: Sir, it is in profit, EPS shrunk for $1.91 to 62 cents this Quarter.

P2: wht is EPS?
Moi: Net Profit (After Taxes, Depreciation)/Total Shares but Pref Dividend is also this i remember afterwards when Amru reminded me on Call

P2: What happened in ur Previous attempts?
Moi: sir, i was a little weak in VA part and everytime i got destroyed by VA. This time i took care of it and managed calls.

I Told them abt my near 99.xx n 99.xx n no calls situation for the past 3 years :icon_cry:
(I wrote this as my weakness as fear of past failures sometimes haunt me in my present pursuit and i lost amny IIM calls jsut coz i was scared fo a 40 Qn paper in VA)


P2: Tell me waht is India's GDp & GDP rate
MOi: It is around 1.1 Trillion Dollars
Sir last Quarter Q3 it was 5.3 and 9 months ka is 6.9 and the CSO projected 7.1 for the year will go for a toss and i feel it will be around 6.5-6.6 for the year.

Thats all Folks Khel khatam Duklam Band aur mein chala awaiting Results.

How did i do? i know was idiotic at times :(

GD: An article titled "Sachin- master blaster or massive burden"
Article spoke abt Sachin and other senior players relying o their past records and hence being selected time and again.... Had a line that said, "Sachin belongs in a wax museum not in the cricket field"....
I realised in no time that the GD was being held in India ... all 9 jumped into it and spoke without a pause.... there was little substance and a lot of incoherence.....
Made my points.... again the good part being that I commanded silence when i spoke ..... decent GD but an anti-climactic topic... K cud have done better... especially after the little master's blistering 160-odd knock...

Asked me the laws of thermodynamics....
Gave him one and told him i dont know the xact definitions of the others buit can explain them....he didnt probe further....

"Advanced Gizmos has launched a robotics toaster. A great product, It produces bread toasts that are more crispier and golden in color than any other product. Sales of 1 million units in 2 months.1 customer reported that bread caught fire once. The engineering team on testing found the complaint to be rare . Such an occurence can happen if you are toasting whole wheat bread taht is rich in vitamin B and humidity is less than 10%.
The engineering team believes such an event is very very rare. The company has corrected the mistake in a product that they are about to launch. If they go for a recall, it will incur huge loss. Also competitors are waiting to launch a product. What should the company "

Brief Snapshot of Discussion:
Decent discussion. Mostly 3 guys were talking. I entered 4-5 times and did reasonably well. At the start I talked about how J&J withdrew Tylenol from the market in the 80's after a scare and reintroduced it and the goodwill it generated. Apart from this, other points that I spoke were normal.

P2: Had a french beard. Again couldnot find him in the faculty page.

P1 called me in.

P2: So Lots of people from NIT Trichy (He was actuall looking at the form of a previous person)
Me: Sir , I am not from NIT T. I have a lot of friends there and was just speaking to the previous person.

P2: O You are not from NIT T. I am sorry I am not looking at your form.
(Takes my form). Where are you from ?
Me: I am from Madurai. I did my schooling and college there. I have been working in Bangalore for the last 18 months.
P2 was reading my form , P1 was just looking at me. So I continued

I did my undergrad in Information Technology. I am interested in reading and quizzing. In addition to my work , I do .............

Me: Reading and quizzing. I used to read a lot of fiction initially. Now I read more non fiction particularly books related to business. I take active part in quizzes.

P2: Whats your favorite subject
Me: Datastructures

P2: What is datastructure
Me: Said a few sentences. Arrays, Linked Lists, Trees. Special trees like Splay tree and AVL tree. spoke 1 or 2 lines about sorting.

P2: How will you choose a particular datastructure
Me: Time complexity, Space constraints.

P2: You work as a DBA?
Me: Yes sir. I joined on Aug 2007 and working here as a DBA since then.

P2: Why did you choose this and not development.
Me: I had my training immediately after joining. Post training there was no opening in development projects. So I was doing an analytics project for 2-3 months and then moved back to IT. This was the only opening available. otherwise I would have had to spend 2-3 months on th bench.

P2: So this was forced on you.You dont like it.
Me: No sir. Work is good. At that time, I spoke with my manager. Project was good. Team was also very good. So I took it.

P2: But if you like it, Why come here. You cannot go back to DBA work after IIM K
Me: I like the work. But my long term goal is not in the DBA/IT domain.I want to ............ So IIM K will help .......................

P1: Tell us something about Madurai.
Me: Madurai is famous for the Meenakshiamman temple.
Spoke about how the name Madurai came into being. Talked about 1 belief that existed during the sangam movement.

P2 (cuts me) : So you people are superstitious
Me: No sir

P2: But you just said...
Me: It was a belief that they had at that time. Not anymore. Madurai is a conservative place. Has lagged Chennai,Coimbatore in terms of economic development. But not superstitious.

P1 was looking at me. I thought he was expecting me to continue about Madurai.

Said Madurai today has industries in textiles and Auto.TVS group was established in Madurai. Aravind eye care system is headquartered here.

P1: Tell me the literary work thats very popular and connected to Madurai.
Me: Sir Sangam movement started here. Lotsa works were written. Tamil's basic grammar work was written during that time. Subramania Bharathi.

P1: yeah. Bharathi is from Madurai
Me: Bharathi is actually from Tirunelveli. He worked as a teacher in Madurai. Some people say Thirukkural was written in Madurai. But it is not established. There is also a school of thought that says it was written in Mylapore.

P1: Who wrote Silapadhigaaram
Me: Adigal (thought for a few seconds, then said) Ilango adigal

P1: What is the story of silapadhigaaram.
Me: I have forgotten the name of the protagonist. The protaganist fell into financial distress.

P1: Kovalan.........
Me: (surprised) Yes sir. Kovalan.

P1: You are from Madurai. Dont you think its a crime to forget Kovalan.
Me: Yes sir. It is. But Just could not recollect it here.
Kovalan went to the court of the king to sell kannagi's anklet.

P1: Okay. Leave it.
Me: At the end, Kannagi burnt Madurai.

P1: Thats ok. Lets move on. Madurai's agriculture. Tamilnadu's agriculture.
Me: Madurai is famous for Jasmine. Some horticulture also is done.
Paddy is primarily in Tanjore.

P2: (cuts in) Whats agricultures share in the gdp.
Me: 3-4%

P2: Only that much
Me: Sorry sir. Thats the growth. GDP share is 16-17%

P2: What other sectors contribute to the GDP
Me: Services, Manufacturing

P2: Which is India's largest company.
Me: By revenue or By Market cap ? what parameter

P2: What parameter can we use.
Me: We can use Marketcap sir. I think Reliance Industries is the largest by market cap.

P2: By revenue?
Me: (Thought for a second) I think Reliance is largest even by revenues, they have close to 75000 crores in revenues.

P2: Indian Oil ?
Me: O yes. Thats the biggest by revenue.

P2: Difference in IOC and RIL, in terms of revenues.
Me: Not sure sir.

Interview went for 15 minutes. The shortest till that time in my panel.
I think the next person had an even shorter interview.

I personally felt good.There were a few goof ups. But I guess its okay.
