VA-98.XX

OA 99.24

X - 90%
XII 82 %
Graduation 72%
work ex arnd 4 months

now i know that i didnt get any call and nothing can be changed.. is the overall score a bit less or 93.17 in QA is what did me .. ??
I have a very similar story to tell

QA 93.17
DI 99.24
VA 97.17
OA 99.24

10th 92.6
12th 85.8

Grad 70.34 (Among top 5 in the batch)
No Work EX

No calls

I guess we missed A by a mark in QA. they wanted 94tile.

And it makes no sense at all to use to 10th/12th/Grad scores without standardization.

And same goes for work Ex : The quality of workex must be considered.

And "Profile" seems to a big farce? I guess only universities in the US evaluate and respect "profile" in real sense of the word.

Well , I know Iam going to invite couple of Groans for this post...

First of all my empathy to people who didnt get the calls of their choice

As we are aware CAT is one of the aspects to be considered for selection . This statement has been used by IIM B,L,I,K,C(PGDCM) in the CAT bulletin & from the last year experience we all know IIMS looks at high Graduation percentage...

IIMA is the only institute, which introduced the Acads weightage this year..

I know many of us here are reacting because we didnt get calls from the premier institutes inspite of performing exceptioanlly well even beyond One's own expectations...

Now lets look at this issue with a small real life example....

In 2000, when I appeared for my Campus placements, 150 people appeared for the Placement Process of my First Employer...The minimum percentage requirement to apply for the company was 55%. Out of the 150 applied, only 50 were shortlisted for the written test...

Believe me the top 100 out of the list (in terms of the aggregate Score) were eliminated..People were shocked & couldnt find a reason for that..

Now out of the 50 who appeared for the written test , only 20 were selected..Most of the People who were studs (technology wise) couldn't see their names in the list...

Now these 20 were called for interview process...3 rounds of interviews & finally, only I was selected..I was actually surprised to know that with a paltry 58% in BE, with a sub normal communication skills..I could get the highest offer in the college..

Now, my friends were keen to know why they were not selected for the Sales role, when they had a passion to join Sales, had Great Acads, had excellent communication skills etc..

I had a talk with my VP on the selection process, requesting him politely to explain me, why was I selected and why not my friends when they were too good ..

His explanation was too good..

He said, we have a Sales Role, when we look at a person with high percentage , we know for sure, after one year he will run away into a technical field(Remember, they didnt give the upper cutoff, when we were asked to apply)...Now, in the written test, many of your friends who have done well in the technical round failed in the psychometric test (Iam sure I would have failed in the technical round & the test didnt say anything on the sectional weightage), For a sales Job, we dont need a technical brain but a brain which can think logically...

Now in the interview, if you look at the 20 people every one was better than you in other aspects, but everyone had the same answer for 1 qtn , whats you aim in Life , all 19 of them said one answer in different styles "the answer was I want to be a CEO/MD/Business tycoon etc" .Your answer (My answer was "I come from a poor family & now my only aim is to move my family to the Middle Class level") was different .Even in that answer, money is involved , but it reflected reality, we believe that a person who respects his family will be committed in his job"...

Now lets come to the IIM selection,

Many of us are complaining either about the process or the fact that IIMs haven’t revealed it in the bulletin..

Well try correlating with my Job interview experience, now IIMs have whole rights to select a batch of its wish, more than rights IIMs apply a Logic to select a candidate..

Everyone here knows that anything above 98%ile it’s a matter of 1-2 questions, which decides 99 +..Now when it comes to 1-2 questions a person could have got it either because his attempts are high(so even if accuracy is average the score will be high) or a person could have just taken a wild guess for 5 questions in the last 5 minutes, getting 3 of them right..

Now when everyone is equally placed how do I eliminate, obviously I cannot call all the 5000+ guys for 200 odd seats by which the effort required to eliminate (instead of selecting) is going to increase manifold…even after applying the criteria like Workex..Now when they say workex will be given weightage, it depends batch to batch, college to college. Some institutes see Workex as a boon (where in they can showcase the quality of people, who can take up roles after MBA-US Style), some as a bane (The more the workex is, the more the candidate’s rigidity will be & molding him in academic front would be tough)..Now one cannot decide this, unless until you know, how many have good workex & how many have crossed the minimum cutoffs (out of the applicants) & what sort of mix I want in my college rather how much I can help a workex guy(read high) in terms of his learning, his placements etc & most importantly, how much the industry is going to accept my batch..End of the day, even the IIMs are doing a distributor's job by buying you, molding you & selling you in the Job market..

The same can be applied to your academic / other aspects if you can correlate with the above explanation (I would have explained even that, but this post is getting too long)..

So net net, we cannot blame the IIMs that they haven’t considered our candidature or we can fight saying why didn’t you mention it before hand..

Let me ask you a straight question, assume the IIMs say A,B,C have mentioned in the bulletin that candidates who have scored less than 75 each in 10, 12 , graduation etc, will not be considered, wont you still buy the application & shade the LIKS forms. Why an hypothetical condition as above, lets look at the current scenario only, we know IIMB’s selection process..Dont we still shade the B column year after year, expect the call against expectations & keep quite when we see a “Sorry Message” in the GD/PI link…

So stop blaming IIMs, end of the day you are sellers & they are buyers & rule 1 of marketing says a Salesman cannot blame a Customer for not buying”

Hope that Maturity prevails..

With this post Iam closing this thread & you guys can continue in the thread which is titled the weird CAT results & please don’t openup new threads for the same topic..
