Preparaing for CAT 2009 . I haven't taken up CAT before. This is my first attempt.

I am very much weak in QA!!!! I have joined the Correspondence Course in TIME . Since not having time to join the regular course.

How to start the preparation? How to identify the weightage of marks allocated to each question?

How many questions can we able to attend to score maximum marks in each section since with the consideration of negative marking?

These are the queries i have!!!

Awaiting reply.

Thanks,

Srividya,
Start preparing from ur weakest section. since u already hav Arun Sharma's buk with u. try doing it. pbably a week for a chapter . pbably more than a week for chapters like numbers/ geometry... weightage of questions is clearly given at the beginning of any question paper. past few years hav followed a trend of equal weightage to eveyr question. +4 for right answer and -1 if u get it wrong.
About number of questions to be attempted, please take a look at a few posts back where the percentile is given for last years paper . for example last year 8 questions in DI correct ,with no negative wud hav fetched u around 92percentile, and in verbal 11 questions correct, with no negtaive wud hav fetched u 90+ percentile. so i wud request u to go thru prev years patterns and analyze them in detail. u can do it parallely with ur preparation.

Hi Puys..

i am working for cognizant, having 2yrs of wrk exp..(by the time i join a B school i ll have 3 yrs of wrk exp..) i gave 2008 cat without any preperations and was a disaster.. now i have decided to give my last try for CAT and want to make it big.. I have joined TIME institute and ahave been attending classes..

Puys.. is it really worthy to join a Bskool which accepts around 80 + marks and give up my job.. B'cause wat i feel is though not getting a highly paid sal frm these skools , i defenitely feel my MBA will surely help me to climb up the ladder of any business in a long run. so i am ready to compramise on tht... Puys.. plz give ur suggestions...

My B skool choices are

XIME, Amritha, BIM tech, CHRIST..

I really want to do a MBA...
waiting for ur replies..

My prfile: xth-85% 12th-90% BE-Mechanical 75% with distinction

hi all,
need your inputs on this - i have been in IT with almost 4 years of work-ex! have been writing CAT since the last 3 years & always it has ended up with a 95-96%ile! i have been gunning for the top institutes & hence did not apply anywhere else.
with IT screwing up my life & aspirations i have decided to quit my job & give CAT-2009 a final & all out effort. what do u guys think about it? do you think it is going to go very much against me in the GD/PI stage. i ahve decent acads: 10th - 83%; 12th - 81%; B.E. - 63% with quite a lot of extra-curricular activities. looking forward to your comments on this, guys!
thanx in advance!

cheers

hi rohit,
the difference between 80% and 90% is hardly 2 to 3 questions
so ur IQ,if it is good enough to get u 80 u r sure to get 90+
and ur work experience also works in ur favour
any how leave such thoughts for now and lets concentrate more on our prep
all the best

hi nemo,
the main point here is can u concentrate for the next 8 months entirely on CAT prep??
if ur heart says YES,go for it.
give a thought by judging urself un biasedly..
if u feel u may be deviated in between better stay with ur job
u have 4 years exp....so i think u also have a chance to apply for executive MBA
all the best

I would suggest you otherwise.. As you said that you are in the range of 96-97%ile each year, that means that you are just 2-3 questions short of getting a 98-99%ile range... So leaving you job for the sake of 2-3 quesitons won't be advisable...

Better what you can think of is taking a sabbatical of 2-3 months for prep before CAT... and then join from jan or feb. That way you will end up having your cake and eating it too...

And yes, those planning to leave your job.. be prepared to justify it too at the interviews as panelists may not take it lightly... They would instead argue that there are so many candidates battling out along with their grads and work ex, so what's so special in you that we should consider you ... Also make sure that CAT is highly unpredictable... So if you end up with say 98-99%ile range after leaving your job, then the panelists would certainly question you thatt even after leaving your job, you did not manage to top the exam...

Make an informed decision

Re: CAT 2009 for working professionals - 14-03-2009, 11:54 PM

since u have got 9yrs of work ex so i suggest u to go for 1 yr MBA rather than traditional 2 yr MBA course. 1 yr MBA is offered by SP Jain (named PGPM course), ISB, Great Lakes, IIMs,XLRI in India...These institutes consider GMAT, CAT & XAT scores...u can find more details on the following links:

http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/other-...ml#post1434902 (S. P. Jain 1 year PGDM program in Information and Operations Management)

Admissions PGPM @ SPJIMR [1 Year MBA Program]

hope this helps...

Hi Anchun,

thanx for ur suggestions.. but the fact is tht i am already 24 and by the time i join a course it will be 25.. so somehow i wanna join mba by 2010.. its a now or never situation...so taking recession as a factor.. i dont see any future without a MBA.

I have another doubt... After my MBA will the companies consider my 3yr work expo:angel: or again treat me as a fresher??uppydog:
Consider 2 scenarios after my MBA...
1.suppose if i waana continue in the IT field
2.Suppose i waana a shift to a manufacturing sector.
