Kindly take note:

1) Please do not quote the whole post when, you are posting a solution, use post number

2) Give a reasoning, why you are giving that answer, whatever reason it may be, we must know how you arrived at the answer, this will help know how to approach or not approach a problem

Both of the above are necessary, please adhere to, this is for the good of everyone

Implex Para Completion 11.10.2008 Post 177

Question 1
Researchers are reporting that a healthy fat found in olive oil, nuts and avocados is important in send message of fullness to the brain. In effect it tells the brain to stop eating. The study by UC Irvine pharmacologists shows that these fats trigger production of a compound in the small intestine that curbs hunger pangs. _________________. Daniele Piomelli, the Louise Turner Arnold Chair in Neurosciences, and his colleagues have studied how a fat-derived compound called oleoylethanolamide regulates hunger and body weight.

Answer - Option 2 The study has been published in the journal Cell Metabolism.

Option 3 and 4 eliminated. Option 5 does not sound correct because it suddenly comes down to all the details. It does not connect with the next statement. Its a tough choice between option1 and 2. I will go with 2 because the previous statement talks about the study. Still not sure.

Question 2

When communism collapsed, the West had all the cards. The one-party state and the planned economy hadn’t worked. Welfare capitalism, free media, the rule of law and contestable elections were winners both in theory and in practice. _______________. Even better, Western economies were mostly in good shape: West Germany could afford to take on the colossal bill for rebuilding the former Soviet-occupied zone in the east.

Options

Answer - Option 5 Memories of cold-war compromises and blunders, real or imagined, were either fading or appeared forgivable.

eliminated 2 because "even better" is repeated. Eliminated 3 because "In return" Option 5 does not connect well with next statement.Option 1 is eliminated because it uses "doddle" which means simple task and in the next statement it says "could afford"
Option 5 connects well because it tells how bad memories were fading as West Germany planned to rebuild the former Soviet-occupied zone in the east.

My take on "Implex Para Completion 11.10.2008 Post 177"

1) Option (3)(4)(5) were eliminated as they talk about OEA which has been introduced in later statement : how a fat-derived compound called oleoylethanolamide (OEA) (2) doesn't get a place in between the description of the study. So I would go with (1) (though I have doubts about (3) as well ) (1) is also backed by the statement " regulates hunger and body weight" in the following statement.
(1) .The discovery, the researchers say, points toward new approaches to treating obesity and other eating disorders

2) (2) (3) (5) can be eliminated easily.. the doubt comes on (1) or (4) but (1) can be eliminated on carefully reading the sentence 'the European Bank" So my answer is (4) (this time I am more confdent with the choice)
(4)Memories of cold-war compromises and blunders, real or imagined, were either fading or appeared forgivable.

Answers batao!

my solution Implex Para Completion 11.10.2008 Post 177

1.The discovery, the researchers say, points toward new approaches to treating obesity and other eating disorders.
-got this by eliminating other options.

2.The study has been published in the journal Cell Metabolism.
-This cant be the answer bcoz the mention of the study comes in the last sentence.

3.The analysis revealed that an unsaturated fatty acid called oleic acid stimulates production of OEA, which in turn decreases appetite.
-There is a mention of a compund in the last sentence..so i don't think this cud be the answer, same with option 5.

4.Piomelli believes OEA could be used in a variety of drugs because it is a key to the way the body naturally handles fatty foods and regulates eating and body weight.
-This cnt be the answr coz of the mention of piomelli, who is introduced in the last sentence.

5.Oleic acid is transformed into OEA by cells in the upper region of the small intestine. OEA then finds its way to nerve endings that carry the hunger-curbing message to the brain.
-same as 3.

Not sure about this...As the next sentence begins with EVEN BETTER the previous sentence shud say something positive...
1.Raising capital for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development was a doddle.
Not positive.
2.Things got even better: as liquidity swirled round the world’s capital markets, investment poured into the ex-communist economies.
-Already even better is there in the next sentence,so this cnt be the answer.
3.In return the West laid down conditions: convertible currency, free trade, balanced budgets, privatisation.
In return of what??
4.Memories of cold-war compromises and blunders, real or imagined, were either fading or appeared forgivable.
Left with this..sounds positive..i will go wid this...
5.How different that looks now.
dsnt look relevant.

@Kaptan bhai - gr8 work...aise sawal roz karte rahenge to CAT ka VA to phod hi denge sab.. fir to 30 DIN SEAT IN pakka...

Cheers,
RD.

[quote=implex;1248096]Implex Para Completion 11.10.2008 Post 177

My take

Question 1
Answer is 5

How did i eliminate

1 - passage doesnt talk about obesity
2 - passage doesnt talk about Cell metabolism
3 - Fatty acid not related again
4 - this sentence cannot start with Piomelli, as the next sentence opens with his Full name.

Question 2

My take 3 - In return the West laid down conditions: convertible currency, free trade, balanced budgets, privatisation.

Elimination

1. European bank unrelated
2. got even better - doesnt look in sequnce
4. Memories of cold-war - again not related
5.How different that looks now - cant be connected

Cheers

Re: Bol Bachan 'Bakars' Team 08! (The Ultimate Gyan Thread) - 11-10-2008, 04:16 PM

Phew...I watch the thread jumping pages with bated breath!!!!

Here is my attempt from implex QA set::

Q1-Q10. Took it as a 25 min sectional!. (folded in 20 only)

The best prob of the Set in my view is 3rd which is how CAT will be i think very wordy and logic based!

Answers::

1.B
2.A
3.A
6.D
7.D
8.A
9.B

Help me out with 5. Nemesis as usual -> Arrangements. Dint read 4 :P

Also i think We shud take one step a time and dnt proceed till we complete the Daily Target.

Where are the 2 DI sets for today ?? Koi post kar raha hai ??

Re: Bol Bachan 'Bakars' Team 08! (The Ultimate Gyan Thread) - 11-10-2008, 04:28 PM

DI concept from Arun Sharma

Remember the following points while solving a question in DI:
1. A question will beat you only if you are unable to interpret a specific statement or a particular twist in the data provided in the question.
2. While solving a DI question you must remember, irrespective of your experiences in the mock CATs, most advanced reasoning based DI questions in CAT would have around eight-ten deductions.
3. All questions in the exam are going to be eminently solvable.
4. DI can be your “shortcut” into the IIMs.
5. Do not get into a negative state of mind while solving a DI question. The situation is akin to the famour Gabbar Singh dialogue “Jo Dar Gaya, So mar Gaya...”
6. Even if you spend two-three minutes on a question set and then realise that you are unable to solve it, there is no problem. You can quit the question.
