Hearty thanks for the kind guidance.
I do agree with your initiative of keeping this thread live and kicking despite being so early. I am of the opnion that must be many persons like me who are clueless as to how to go about CAT or similar exams. Though i dont intend to participate before feb as i need to clear my basics before actively participating in the threads, i would certainly would like to know where the thread is heading so that i dont get the shock when i start actively participating.

Hi,
Sourabh, good to see the juices flowing..
am myself prepping hard for CAT 08 and its pertinent that I share some of my experiential learning with you guys
few pointers from my side:
1. QA: For now, take up the following books: Arun Sharma, Think Without Ink.
Start off with single chapters every two weeks or so. If need be, go back to Class X, XII books to brush on basics.
2. VA: Read a lot. Not word lists, not cue cards, but do read the newspaper. (Economic Times and hindu) This'll do the job. Your General Awareness would be in line too.
3. DI: Get hold of this year's TIME and SIM mocks. Get hold of TIME and SIM mocks of 2007. An odd 300 DI caselets!! (20+20+10+10=60X5=300)
Online Resources:
Pagalguy.com
Tenaday.co.in. (strongly recommended)
Totalgadha.com. (read above)
Now comes the online test structure analysis.
I have given the online mock given by TIME....one thing which is very very important is:
in DI, you'd have caselets. Obviously you won't be able to mark on the screen on the tables and charts so this is a place where you should really find a solution to. Sometimes you'd need to place ranks on the charts provided etc etc.
in QA and VA, not much difference would be realized. Obviously, you woudn't have the comfort of jumping through the questions at your behest, though you'd have the provision for it.
Very Important generic pointers:
1. Do NOT burnout!! Very pertinent since you're starting off from soooo early..
2. Enjoy your preps. Incorporate it in your lifestyle. Not something that you'd have to be forced upon.
Peace..

I thank you personally and also on behalf of this thread, for producing one of the most useful posts for people like us..:hurray:
I have already purchased quite a good number of books.
I agree with you in respect of tenaday.co.in. Before I came to know of PG, I used to spend most of time there!! [As a matter of fact, I am thinking about creating an excel sheet for all the members of this tread, where our percentiles can be recorded together and compared!!]
Regarding "Think without ink", I tried the bookstores in Kolkata and they don't have it. I understand totalgadha has a copy of it for sale online. Can you please let me know the price of the book?
Hey....Thanx again man..
And all the best for CAT 08.... Hope you make it!!:gunsmilie:

We Start now!! #1 Go tenaday!! -
08-09-2008, 12:41 PM
CAT 2009 preparation starts now!!
Ok guys. Its time to get down to work.:iamcool:
One of the best friends of a newbie to CAT preparation and the pattern of CAT is the free but amazing preparation website: tenaday.co.in
These are the features of the website:
- They present you with 10 new questions each day for the three areas: Quant, DI/LR and VA.
- The questions are given in the form of tests.
- Each test needs to be completed in 10 minutes. This is an amazing thing, because by solving a set of three question papers daily, your speed increases dramatically.
- WHAT MORE? YOU GET TO KNOW YOUR PERCENTILE FOR EVERY SINGLE TEST GIVEN BY YOU. There are more than 36000 people registered with it!!
- NEED MORE? Detailed answers with explanation are provided at the end of every test, so that you can know your strong and weak areas..
- All this is free!!

Now now now....
I am uploading an excel file that I maintain for tests taken by me. It helps me to keep a track of my performance. You need to record your scores and percentiles there. The graphs will be generated automatically..
All of us need to take at least 4 tests (all three parts) in a 7 day week, fill up the excel sheet and post your marks.
We can discuss the questions and answers here, and more importantly, the fastest and best approach of arriving at the answers.
After you guys have registered with tenaday, by 15th, you need to complete the following test numbers (in all three categories) and fill in your excel sheets. Finally we can discuss the results here from 16th onwards:
156, 161, 163, 167.
I hope (know) this will be very useful for all of us.
Comments welcome..

The format and thinking is great
But, I would like to put forward a few points : The best part of starting so early is that we can ease our way into the last 6 months of prep. i.e. this is the time (IMHO) that we should first Discuss all Basics and Fundas of QA,VA, DI/LR etc.
We should have a plan that allows us to take things step by step i.e. Prepare the theroy/funda of a particular topic and then go for Questions related to it. Everybody can pick up a particular topic and take the responsibility of putting Questions of that topic on the thread and then they can be discussed.
Of course, at the starting, now we should go with the tests mentioned by you, discuss our current standings and then proceed systematically.....
P.S. @Saurabh. please do not quote the whole post when it is as long as that of Yudhajeet. Just put his name or first and last lines: Saves Space

I agree with you. I thought about the tenaday thing, in the first place, because I want people to realize the importance of learning the Basics and Fundas first..When you realize that you cannot make so many DI calculations or so many quant calculations in 10 minutes (as is the format of tenadat tests), you will go for learning fundas.
I mean, describing the Louvre is one thing, and taking you to it for you to see and observe it is another, right?
Anyways, I would love it if you could contribute anything to the thread regarding the basic Fundas..

Re: Calling all CAT 2009 puys!! -

To start with , as our dear tennis ace has said , we should choose a particular topic for a week for may be for 2-3 weeks.. where in we all can study the concepts and then go the the online tests on tenaday.com ...
taking tests without having the fundas corrects wouldn't be of any joy i think
anyways .. PG is starting of with its DI question a day feature which i think we all can start with.
DI doesn't need all those hard core fundas i suppose, and we all would be able to solve them.. side by side we can make schedule for the quant and cover topics week per week..
after some time we can start r verbal prep also.. (Verbal ka he to saara panga hai yaar! )
lets start it in a step by step manner...
for quant we can start with Number system or Percentages ...
what do u guys think???
