Freshers at SPJIMR, Mumbai - 18-08-2008, 06:28 PM

Hello..!!

I guess the title of the thread suggests what this thread is gonna be all about....You may all wonder why the need for this thread, but then lemme explain WHY...??

Last year when I was preparing for CAT and the time to fill forms came, one thing that was very important was selection of B schools to apply to. I had already decided where I wanted to apply BUT one thing that actually surprised me was that most people told me not to apply to SPJIMR, and the reason they gave was that SP doesnt take freshers.

I never knew that but I heard it from a lot of ppl, so I checked the batch profile on the website and realised that there were freshers. Then I thought why was it that so many ppl told me not to apply...the answer I got was that MOST PPL HAVE A MYTH that SPJIMR doesnt take freshers.

Now that I have actually made it to this wonderful place in Andheri(W), I thought its high time things are made CRYSTAL CLEAR..

So, for every prospective MBA student out there : "SPJIMR TAKES FRESHERS AND THERE ARE NO TWO WAYS ABOUT IT, I AM A FRESHER AND IN TIME YOU WILL SEE THE HUGE LIST OF FRESHERS POSTING HERE"

Infact there quite a few freshers in our batch and in our seniors batch also..So if anyone has any query about FRESHERS @ SPJIMR (any query) put it down here and we will be more than happy to help you..

cheers

p.s. : You can see my age and that will clear a lot of MYTHS

Re: Freshers at SPJIMR, Mumbai - 18-08-2008, 06:37 PM

Hi,
Sumit explained a lot. Need I say more?

When I got through SP last yr, the standard comment that I got was "But you are a fresher". There are some myths about SP. And this is definitely one of them.

Having said this, the fact still remains that the work-ex junta do outnumber freshers. Even in the interviews you would face a tuf competition from people having work ex.

In this thread, you may post any query about the advantages or disadvantages of having no work ex, how we cope up with things vis a vis our experienced friends, how tuf the life is for us here, what is the typical 'fresher' profile of our batch and a lot more.

Freshers are generally taken in for Mktg and Fin. Sumit is from fin and I am from mktg. So you may also direct specialization related questions to us.

Hope we have a fruitful discussion.

Good Even..
Well i m in my 4th year now...so another fresher aspiring for SPJIMR
its good that u cleared that belief or myth people like me had...but certainly if freshers are a second priority there...then if a few of u managed to get thru, you would have great profiles...with academics and extra curriculurs..one with just academics would certainly miss out????

The reason i wish to know it is that there are so many options out there..and i hv good academics, but almost nothing on extracurriculars...being a fresher i already fall behind i believe..add to it the profile..so any chances then???

Profile is not equal to acads + extracurrics + workex + CAT score

Though they are important, a lot more is taken into consideration while selecting candidates. The interviewer or the person who shortlists you will look for personality traits, value system, how you balanced/ prioritized things etc.

You have been good at acads. I am sure you have some amount of extracurrics. Project that well. And do well in CAT. Also, THINK before you start filling up the application. There will be descriptive sections. They are also important in addition to other things.

Also, we are not 'so few'. There are quite a lot of us.

Hi...u know what, I cud probably be best person to answer ur ques..
I had the same thing last year in my mind and I had thot that I wudnt even get the call...
Even if u are good in acads, you can make thru..I had absolutely nothing of co-curriculum in my profile.
So rest assured you also have all the chances of making it here...
Give ur best shot, and belive in yourself...

cheers

i. Ya u hav...ur school results r quite good.
ii. Min CAT %ile is 85. But it varies based on ur profile. Generally for freshers it is >95. Sectionals are generally not taken into consideration but a balanced sectional helps
iii. You can put this in the appropriate area of the application form.

Hope this helped. Revert back if in doubt.

Umm...just a suggestion. Instead of just making this thread limited to Freshers of SPJIMR, why not increase the scope to Freshers at top B-Schools.

What challenges they face, how their perception changes and lot more things can be covered.

Let me know if this is fine with the thread starter. Then I will edit the title of the thread. I dont want to spoil the party with my ideas

Cheers,
Rohit
