Re: [2009] Stage 2 of PaGaLGuY B-school Rankings - Answer the survey -

Hey Puys,
I do not believe that Perception based surveys truely reflect upon the quality of the B-Schools. However, such surveys present a set of B-Schools from which prospective MBA students can filter out B-Schools and then dig info about them and find the one that best suits them.
I have pened some more opinions of mine on B-Schools Surveys in my blog - B-School Surveys Carteblancheleeway’s Weblog

Posting profile info about b schools also offers an opportunity for newer students and others to find the info they need and help them take decisions based on the data available....one might argue that such info might be available with the b school site but we all know that users dont have the patience to open the link and start searching for a b school.....and yearly updates of such info can be done.....

Whoever said they do? We've openly said that they are the rankings of the Most Preferred B-schools.
Your post is tantamount to saying - "It is wrong to say that Grilled Chicken Sandwiches can fly in the Ionosphere." Well, who said in the first place that they can?
(Analogy used only for illustrative purposes. No intention to make personal attack using sarcasm)

I remember a parable I have listened to atleast 7 times, each time learning more than before...
A mother, wanting to please her infant, places a bowl of kheer in front of him. She urges him, with all her motherly love, to eat. But he refuses to. He says that he sees black pebbles in the kheer, which he will not like because they grate his teeth. She explains that they are not pebbles, but cardamom seeds, elaichi. They have a taste of their own, which enhances the taste of the kheer itself. But the kid refuses to believe. What will the mother do? She wants him to enjoy the sweetness of the kheer... whether elaichi there or not. So she removes the seeds and places the bowl in front of the infant again... But what if the kid refuses to eat it even then?
It is not the loss of the mother that the child refused to eat. Her love is as profuse as before. It is the child's loss that he lost out on a chance to eat it.
I recollect this parable everytime I see an objection to the basic methodology of the rankings on this thread. As I have said, and I reiterate, it is not a perfect ranking. Rather, it is not even a ranking. It is just a statistical collection of the perceptions and thoughts that a varied sample of the Indian (and to some extent, foreign) population has about MBA in general and bschools in particular.
The very opacity of the way bschools function in India have laid bare the methodologies that are based on facts and figures. How can you expect a ranking that easily puts unworthy bschools ahead of many worthy ones? What facts and figures do they really have? And if the schools have really cooperated with the ranking authorities, to what levels have audits been carried out to clearly verify that the reported figures are truth?
Rather a ranking that does not depend on such facts at all. A method that takes what the public thinks about the schools, and puts a number on that. Nothing else. What cooperation do I have to get from a bschool for that?
Its sad, but true. I agree completely that a credible ranking methodology should (not must) have facts and figures as one basis. Two things arrive out of that: One, that you do not summarily discard any methodology that doesn't, and two, that you ensure that the facts are truer than tax figures. Any way to achieve that?
Regards,
Grondmaster

I have seen rankings in different magazines with lots and lots of variations. I get very disturbed when i find some of the very average institutes getting a place among top rankers and institutes like IIM - L,I,K, FMS etc hovering around 15s and 20s. These make me go wary. i don't know and don't want to know that what are the data that these agencies are taking into consideration while preparing the rankings. The rankings are usually filled with crap.
The ranking methodology of PG is based on the intuition of the public. The students and the aspirants are the people who have a better understanding of the value of any institute. So the ranking should be determined according to their perception. They are the people who are going to get impacted the most due to this rating. So its should be left to them to decide which institute is best and which one is not.
I believe in PG ratings and i believe that the rating that comes out of it would be closest to the reality.

We are still data collection mode . As of now, we have more than 5500 respondents.
The tentative date for the results can be expected around 15th Nov. The results this year will be much more comprehensive and will provide many more features to analyze, compare etc etc So , please have patience and I assure you that it will be worth it. In the meanwhile, I request everyone to spread the word and get us more respondents, it will help us in providing everyone a much better picture!
Cheers,
Rohit

Hi All,
As far as I'm concerned, I don't think that even this year respondents will increase to target of 15000 in any case, given that no. of puys who took the survey are less than 6000. And I dont think that increasing the time period till nov 15 at this point of time will do any world of good.
Further more in my opinion rankings are very crucial to puys who are applying to schools on this basis and why not as this is the one of the most prolific surveys by guys who really care about it. Hence, rankings should be out as early as possible as deadlines near during this point of time.
One more thing i want to add for next year surveys is extraordinary efforts for advertising, I know there are some xtraordinary brains at pagalguy.com but at least it lags in somewhere to click the right hand side of brain. Why not go for print media, television, websites, institute brochures etc etc.
This is not a movie where word of mouth will work.
Iam not a person who make prolific posts or just to say blah, so no offences made whatsoever. This is just an OPINION..

Friend, Pagalguy has over 2.5 lac registered users. Even if only 10% of the users participate in the rankings, it will bring the number of respondents to 25000. Keeping this in mind, a target of 15000 respondents is quite realistic. However, time-limit may pose some difficulties in achieving this target. Still, I feel PG would be able to double its respondents base and that would be a commendable job.
As far as advertising is concerned, I think PG has done exceptionally well in terms if spreading the word to various B-Schools & their aspirants. Why should PG spend on advertising when it is itself one of the best mediums to advertise?
