this topic wud be of gr8 interest for comm guys....last year i ahd an argument with pg bhai where he said that its nearly impossible for a plain bcom grad to get a final admit in an iim...i thought otherwise..but now i know ALLWYN WAS RIGHT....
just look at the profiles of iim final call getters..do u see a comm soul there?/
so shoot with ur opinions guys...imho for a comm guy without a ca/cs or an excellent work-ex...iim will always remain a dream

ya vikas it seems u r correct. i noticed this at the time of reading gdpi experiences too that most of the guys were engineers or ca or ppl with work ex. it seems that no matter how well u prepare for writtens if u r just a plain b.com graduate like me then iims final call will remain a dream.

Hi Vikas,
I guess to some extent u are right. its tough for a plain vanilla com grad to secure a final admit into IIM A, B or C.
My background :
BCom NM college, Mumbai
Percentile : 99.85
No work ex, CA or CS
Calls : All six
Final calls : L and K

My Ahd GD and PI were good and the B and C were decent. Hope this answers your query.

hey guys,

vikas gud thread u started.always,wanted to know abt commerce pgites.

however,i beg to differ from what u guys have said.i had all six calls and cld convert b,c,l,k.and iam happy with that.so,i doan think the iim's discriminate against commies.

going by my gd/pi experiences,i feel ahm gives gr8 weightage to ur academic record.and if u have a gud gd/pi coupled with high cat percentile,the others are a cakewalk(though indore seems to be an exception giving gr8 weightage to ur workex).

ofcourse,in all my gd's i used to be the only commie(except bang where grps are fixed depending on ur academic background).but i guess that's only b'cos few non-engineers are able to make it(given the obvious mathematical advantage which engineers have).

so,commies,doan get disillusioned.we stand as good a chance as the others when it comes to the iim's.

I am Diwakar,a PLAIN BCom Grad with terrible percentage in coll yr's 52 percent to be precise,but i am in IIM CAL.

My Profile

ICSE 84 %
ISC 67% Took up science in higher secondary a blunder which can be seen in the percentage I got.

Graduation 52%

So going by my falling standards and Bcom profile I should have never been to any IIM forget IIM C ,but here I am

thanx guys...i think we are getting into a healthy discussion..my friend say that he doesnt think that the iims discriminate against the comm guys but again he says that he was the only comm guy in the gd--pi that itself supports my opinion...and DIWAKAR BRO AKA ASLI BADSHAH grrrrr8 job man...u are truly an inspiration for comm guys to get into the iim and reject the opinion of foolish guys like me mebbe its the case of SOUR GRAPES 4 ME

My Profile is as follows,I Hope it will help in cracking the myth that only engineers guys get into Top Bschools.

First let me tell u all guys wat I thought when I was preparing for CAT 2003.

I had appeared for Cat 2002 as well and got a very low percentile of 90.But this did not dither me and I always kept motivating myself and believed that I can do much better than this.

Then came CAT 2003 and I did pretty well but alas the paper got cancelled.But still I kept up my spirit and did well in Retest as well.I somehow managed to get a percentile of 99.42 with a sectional percentile of above 97 in all sections.

I managed calls from ALL but IIM A,maybe because of poor acads.

Now comes the most IMP question, how do I handle my interviews?

With not a great profile and nothing to boast about I somehow felt that i will nat make it thru.In the meantime I managed a final call from MDI.

The thing which bother most of commerce guys like me is that when we go thru the profile of students of bschools we c its full of Btech and B.E. so do we really stand a chance.Things were even more difficult for me because I was a normal Bcom grad with no professional degree.

But When I went for the interview I was calm and wanted to show them wat I have instead of wat I don't.I was cnfident in all my interviews and managed a final call from IIM CAL.

Now My Profile


Class 10 ICSE 84%
Class 12 ISC 67% Science
Bcom Cal University 52%

Workex of 3 yrs and presently with AVIVA Life.

I guess my post will help all You wannabe be MBA's

Ps I am posting one more post in the successive one,that should help u guys

And one more thing guys if u have it in you and u want to do anything desperately U will Succeed and GOD will def help.

i am really sure of the fact that if u have it in you to be a part of the best B Schools, u will make it come wat may.So Buddy it really doesn't matter whether u have lost one year or have had bad acads in ur school life and coll life.As my frnds have already stated earlier that these things don't matter.just start working for CAT 2004 with a positive outlook and forget abt all those things.Clear CAT 2004 and do well in GD/PI and u will make it buddy.
See everyone has a bad phase in life but wat these interview ppl look for is that do u have it in u to fight back and prove the world wrong.

Take my example,i had secured 84 percent in secondary exam and took up science in higher secondary and i scored miserably, got only 67 percent.Then i took up Bcom and again made a mess of it by securing only 54 percent with my marks in economics being 27

So wat do u think i should have banished my thought to do MBA from a reputed institute????
No i didn't give up gave CAT 2002,didn't get calls,started working with AVIVA LIfe and again appeared for CAT 2003 and boy i had 5 IIM's call and MDI call
wherever i went for the interview they asked me abt my falling percentages, I put up my brave face and said that was a blog in my life but it should not deter me from making amends in my life.

So here i am with MDI results out and i have got thru with GOD's grace

So buddy just take motivation from my example,with so many flaws in my profile if i could make it u def can do it buddy

myth/reality is that those who get through ...out of them most are engineers
