Re: Profile of People who have Converted their IIM Calls! -

Hi Puys,
This is my profile -
1. Academics:
Xth - 89.8 - cbse
XIIth - 93.2 - AP state board
btech - 7.63 - ece - nit calicut
2. Work Experience - 18 months till dec 2008 as a software engineer(proud to be one ) in samsung india software operations.Work is on mobile software.
3. Extra\Co curriculars - Ok till 10th, but nothing much after it. Decided not to highlight whatever certificates i had; as i may be asked about the decline.
4. CAT 2008: Overall - 99.76
QA - 96.02
DI - 99.64
VA - 98.72
5. Calls - BLACKI
6. GD - PI Analysis:
IIM A: Essay: Good, PI: Average,Verdict: converted
IIM B:Essay:Good,GD: Good,Interview: Average ,verdict:reject
IIM C (PGDM):GD: excellent,PI: good,Verdict: reject
IIM L:Essay: Good,GD: Average,PI: Excellent
Verdict: reject
IIM I:ESSAY: average, GD:Worst (my seat was positioned such that only 4 ppl could see me) PI:Good,Verdict: Converted
IIM-K:GD:average, PI: Strange ,Verdict: Waitlist (arnd 205)
7. Final Converts: A,I, K(waitlist cleared)
Joining : A
Analysis: I was sure about C,L and reasonably confident about I. I am still trying to analyze what went wrong. In ALI, i was asked only on acads and GK; and converted A,I (and luckily the qns were on topics i am good at). In KBC there were some hr type qns; at which i am kind of weak.
Strategy:
1. I knew to compensate for weakness in extra\co curricular\avg acads in b.tech; i had to get a high score.
2. My workex was not a differentiator; but it did give me confidence.Discipline and focussed hard work were positives i picked up with workex. And also i did not let CAT prep interfere with office.Even had to go abroad for 45 days; returning to India only 2 weeks before CAT.
3. My prep was 2.5 hrs for each mock cat and 6 hrs analysis on each mock. For my weak section DI; i practised DI in prev year mock cats.
Mistakes:
i had only 1 mock interview; and really struggled in the real ones for answering some expected hr questions which everyone does well. Should have practised more with friends; and spent more time on them.
Conclusion:
For future aspirants, paraphrasing the great yoda -
"A Puy's strength flows from the Force. But beware the Dark Side. Laziness, fear, and demotivation; the Dark Side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight."
"May the puys be with you"
ps - I pg smilies.

God it feels heavenly to get a chance to post on this thread...
My profile...
X (UP Board): 82.00%
XII (UP Board): 85.40% (Both these percentages are very high by UP Board standards within top 100 students )
Engg (MNNIT Allahabad): 8.08/10 CGPA (Electrical Engineering)
Work Ex: 29 months in IT hardware industry, to be precise debugging Linux storage bugs on x86 arch . I have also applied for a patent on iSCSI technology with US Patents and Trademarks Office
My CAT story...
CAT 06:
OA: 85.06
QA: 85.20
VA: 78.39
DI: 73.52
Calls:
CAT 07:
OA: 75.58
QA: 77.37
VA: 62.02
DI: 67.74
Calls:
CAT 08:
OA: 99.03
QA: 94.63
VA: 97.58
DI: 96.94
Calls: IIMB, IIML and IIMK
Self Analysis:
B int: Essay Good, GD Good, Awesome PI
GD was cool types..spoke four five times. PI was concentrated on my hobby which is Indian defence strategy. At the end of the interview, panelists were asking if what I am telling is in public domain and whether I intend to write a book on the subject!
Final verdict : Selected
K int: Below average GD, Below average PI
My worst performance in all the interviews. Was a sure shot reject. The interview could not be directed towards my hobbies and was centred around palindromes and number theory!
Final verdict: Rejected
L int: Awesome GD, Awesome PI
My GD performance was really good as a fellow candidate told me later.. I had just read an article on the same subject and blurted out all the points during the discussion. PI was again on my hobby which I handled decently though not as good as B interview. The acads part I handled really well and gave them text-book definitions for everything from evolution of management thoughts to fundae about escape velocity!
Final Verdict: Selected
Fundas-
GD/PIs are a real deal clinchers guys. Even if you have a lowish percentile like mine, you can get through. Basically it all boils down to whether they enjoyed interacting with you during PIs. I scanned through B call getters stats from IIMB website and I had below average CAT score and below average grad CGPA still I could clear the call beacuse of hobby and school marks I think.
Stay cool, develop a hobby one in which you can give ANYBODY a run for his money, handle the GD summary part well (basically during the GD, if you don't speak; write what others are saying. Makes life easier later IMHO ).
One more point: during the GD/PI never emerge one as having extremist thoughts. Respect others thought process also and never assume interviewer's background. Generally professors tend to be idealists!
Joining-
So B It!

Re: Profile of People who have Converted their IIM Calls! -
13-04-2009, 01:26 PM
I am a graduate in Electronics and Communication Engineering from NITK, Surathkal. I have 2 years of work-experience with a reputed American company. I am happy with my job and it is well paying (7.7 LPA CTC).
I could convert only 2 of the 6 IIM calls (this was my first CAT attempt). I have offers from IIML and IIMI. I am in a state of great dilemma and confusion as to whether to accept the IIML offer thus resigning from my present job. A few people advice me to do so and another set of people are telling me to not join the college and continue working. Please give me your expert views and help me take the right decision.
