Well here it goes, School: DPS, Vasant Kunj (Batch 2004) 10th: 83.6% 12th: 78.8% Graduation
Stream: B.Tech in Production & Industrial engg. (2004-08 ) College: IIT Delhi Work-ex: Nil CAT QA:99.97 VA:96.40 DI:98.34 Overall:99.93 Calls: ACLIK Converts: ACLK Joining: IIMA obviously !!!! GDPI exp. A - Ok essay, Ok PI
The whole interview was technical based on my stream at college, answered 2-3 questions really well, screwed some 2-3 q's, well at the end he was showing disinterest in me and i was sure that seeing my CGPA at college which was very low they wont take me but god had some other plans , but i think ultimately those 2-3 q's got me through !!! C - Excellent GD/ Excellent PI
GD (Case study)which was like a dream, i did everything right from starting the GD to coming up with many relevant points, trying to give people chance to speak, summarizing in between and foremost taking the discussion forward
PI was very chill which started with general chit chat about having a gf....yes you guessed it right!!! then t went to some maths q's ans a few business q's and it ended in less than 15 mins....overall a very good feeling and so were the results
Hey guys Indore was my best interview out of all n that was the only place where i was rejected dunno why though it doesn't matter now, just for the record .....

Hello Ppl,
Over the past year, I have read quite a few pagalguy articles and made only one post. So I believe I ought to give back something in return for the immense help that pagalguy has been.
Disclaimer: I feel quite strongly on certain issues and whatever I say, which I believe to be true, is based on my perception. The truth is subjective as they say and it is up to you to make up your mind.
Background: 80%+ in X, XII and engineering, 1 year work ex
CAT 07:
DI: 99.98
VA: 99.36
QA:91.69
OA:99.90
Right now in IIMB
Extra currics: Was ranked 3 in India in Badminton in my age group
Like to think that I am good at puzzles with having done well in a couple of international events
Play almost anything under the sun
And the usual stuff of quizzing and debating
Did a bit of translation stuff
Even tried my hand out once in a bit of modelling "The Coaching Institutions are trying to swindle you" Unlike the IIT entrance or the IAS entrance, this is not a knowledge based exam and somehow I cannot digest the term 'preparation' and the meaning that they associate with it. I gave CAT more or less because my friends were giving it and my good fortune in being in IIMB is a pleasant accident and not something that I had planned. So I like to think that what I bring is an unbiased opinion not muddled with the desperation to get into an IIM during the so called 'preparations'.
Contrary to what you might think, this whole process is designed to be a test of the individual that you have grown into over the years and not someone that you're trying to become. Let's do a subject wise analysis of what you get out of your 'coached' preparations.
English: This is the most fake of all preparations. Seriously, even if it hurts you, realize the fact if you haven't cultivated the English language skills within yourself over the years, it's not going to happen now. The Barons and the comprehension reading that you might be doing are not going to take you anywhere and the sooner you realize that the better off you'll be. English is an art, not a science. The only way you can better yourself at it is if you develop an interest in reading and read extensively for the fun of it. Enjoy the story or the novel you're reading and please you need not mark any word that you don't understand and stop your reading to pick up the dictionary. The dictionary can only teach you the meaning that you'll try to memorize, but what you need is to learn its usage that'll only and also automatically come once you come across the word several times. So instead of sweating your ass off in your classrooms, just go relax and enjoy the latest paperback that you can lay your hands on.
DI/LR: You know what we traditionally call this section - 'an aptitude test'. And aptitude my friend does not sharpen when you stereotype yourself with the same type of questions over and over again. Rather, you contradict your development with such measures. It's only dulling your cleverness. These questions are not like maths, that you'll try to come up with a common formula to solve one and all problems. Rather if you try to apply an approach that you had used somewhere else, you'll end up reducing your chances of coming up with the unique approach that the problem may require.
QA: This is one area where I might to some extent concede on the fact that you require some genuine practice. However if you mean to tell me that you do not know how to solve the basic VIIIth to Xth level problems that are given in the paper and actually need a coaching institute to tell you how much 10% discount on selling price is or a basic probability problem's solution is, then seriously you ought to do a serious rethink on your aspirations. You might not have the speed, but honestly you should be able to solve these problems if you harbour not only hopes of getting into an institution, but also absorbing the education that you'll get from it. And you have enough time during the paper to come up with the solutions during the exam and at least knowing and being able to calculate 93*87 quickly is not going to make any difference contrary to what you might be taught in these institutions.
No doubt the mocks will help you to some extent, but that extent is only to help you formulate your strategy for the exam day based on the strengths and weaknesses that you will have identified in these mocks.
On a personal front, I gave 4-5 mocks that's all. I never practiced even one problem of any paper ever. Apart from one single day, which was followed by my worst mock. Maybe, I am an extreme in that sense of maintaining my originality. I did not prepare anything for my exams, not even the tiny weeny bit apart from the 2 and half hours each spent in each mock. Since I have not intentionally disclosed my name here, there is no reason for you to assume that I'm boasting. I am being honest in whatever I am saying. There will be others like me and though we might be an extreme, but the way most of you guys might be preparing is seriously not the way to go about it. These hours that you have slugged so hard in your preparation will lead to a deep sense of frustration and disappointment in your life. You are in a very critical phase of your life where you might me trying to identify the true calling of your life. In such a stage you definitely do not need the obsession that you have for CAT where your entire life hinges on its success. The Coaching institutes are building up this bubble for you and your friends.
On a final note, I would like to say, if you are good enough for CAT, you will get through without this back breaking labour and attending these fake classes. The idea is to realize your potential, which might not be in CAT, but is sure to be in some other field. Don't follow the crowd with your eyes closed. And of course, as a final piece of advice based on the only part of CAT that I went wrong, believe in your own ability when you sit for your exam. Whatever no. of questions that you solve will be good enough, and do not make the mistake of trying to attempt too many questions and end up making too many mistakes and reducing your own score through negative marks like I did in Quant.
These coaching institutions are symbolic of everything that is wrong in this country. They are just trying to milk the public. What do they actually contribute to society. They are not imparting any education from their side and are piggybacking on the names of these IIMs. Can even one of you actually enlighten me on what these coaching institutions have actually value added to one's life? After all the same no. of students will come out with the education that an MBA imparts irrespective of whether these institutes exist or not. Can you say that this is what I've learned from TIME, CL or IMS and I'll apply the education in my life?
P.S. ( I did enroll with TIME after my GD/PI prep, but fortunately the illusion that it will be beneficial lasted for only half a class and I never went back again to waste my 'TIME') "There is only one Michael Owen" | | | | | The Following 25 Users Say Thank You to AKHAMIYA001 For This Useful Post: | aalokfirst (10-10-2008), AeoN (24-09-2008), bits n bytes (24-08-2008), catgotmytongue (29-08-2008), coolabhishake (24-08-2008), datkilldme (29-08-2008), dheeraj138 (01-09-2008), disarp (30-09-2008), grlnxtdoor (30-09-2008), iim.dude (20-09-2008), jaikishen (26-08-2008), ljv (02-09-2008), Madrock (24-09-2008), mr.kat (23-08-2008), naresh007 (26-08-2008), ninja_talli (23-08-2008), numbsoul (31-08-2008), pavanpadekal (24-08-2008), raghav507 (25-08-2008), rah23sinha (09-09-2008), rahul_240488 (05-09-2008), sahilbansal (23-08-2008), Say2sayeed (02-10-2008), umeshlives (24-08-2008), vineet.nitd (02-10-2008) | | | | |

This is the point where I must thank pg for the immense role it played in this success. It was like as a second home. And more so the pgites who acted as mentors and friends. Stories of ppl such as sid and prem ravi and many others were a huge inspiration... to fight despite all odds, things just the kind of thing that helped shore you up after a bad mock or before a big challenge. Finally ...A BIG THANKS to PG.
My take on ppl worrying abt acads or profile: Give ur best....If u believe u r worth it, nuthin can stop u
A post I was waiting to write on PG for a long time .
