Well, its a real privilege to be able to post on this thread. So here goes my profile

10th - 90.4% (CBSE)
12th - 91.6% (CBSE)

Graduation- BE (Electronics And Communication) from PESIT,Bangalore:81.2%

Extra Cirricularrs : Lots in Cricket (Represented Chennai, Captain of school,college etc)

Not much else. A few certificates in olympiads, played other sports like TT,Chess, Volleyball etc

K: Ok GD , Horrible PI

Well, my take is that apart from all the hardwork and preparation that goes in, luck is a factor that plays a big part in the whole process .

Luck favoured me both the years i wrote CAT coz it tested accuracy and not speed, so was able to do well enough to get calls.

At the same time, my B GD went awry due to the topic/group combination over which i really had no control. And being from bangalore, this was one call i really wanted to convert.

Edit: And if you needed more proof, my waitlist at A actually cleared.

So, finally headed to WIMWI

It is a great feeling to be able to post on this thread. My profile:

X : 87.47%
XII : 82%
B Tech : 70.39% from Govt Engineering college, Thrissur.
CAT percentile : 99.46
Work Experience : 1 year at Keane Inc.

As you can see above, I do not have amazing marks in X, XII or Btech, I am not from a very famous college (at least not outside kerala) nor do I have a lot of work experience (and the little that I have is not from a company that everyone knows). To add to all this I resigned from my company a month before the interviews started. I had the feeling that with all these negatives I would not make it, but I did.

The Moral: Do not be too worried about some negatives that u may have, you can offset most of these with ur performance in the CAT and the GD-PI process.

Well, here is another brick on this wall!!

Class 12th: 94.00

Engg: B.Tech+M.Tech (5 yrs dual degree) from IIT Bombay
Work Ex: 4.5 years

Extra-curriculars: Nothing great to speak of.
Although, in last one year I found great ways to involve myself with community service. I even attended a short part-time course in Social Entrepreneurship which really gave me some confidence in facing live issues. I conducted a fund-raising campaign in Bangalore as a student of that course. Anyone interested should contact CSIM, Bangalore

GD/Interviews were all straightforward, in the sense, that I only focussed on my strong points and found a few ways to direct the interview in those directions whenever possible. Although, the panelists are very cordial and they generally won't try to stress you out. Only one tip that I can give: Remain as calm as you can be in those circumstances.

Wish you guys all the best for your journey to an MBA! Give it your best shot, but never compromise with your current job! CAT is an exam, which requires some very BASIC skills and knowledge. The most critical factor on the day of the exam is your coolness factor. If you put your job in jeopardy, chances are that you will be highly stressed on the D-day. That will like losing half the battle! Keep your approach simple and stress-free, and you're gonna luv it!!

GD/PI Experiences

A : I write well-So I think I made an impression there. Topic was about climactic changes and I put in Nairobi conference and Kyoto to Copenhagen protocol switch etc., I was very satisfied with my essay. , Good PI -People who went in before me got out in sweats but after my PI I did not understand what all that sweat was about. One prof was shouting alright, but it was plain vanilla he was faking it. He is looking for behavioral cues and I got his game and played it well. Q's asked: thermodynamics laws,entropy calculation if he heated his water bottle, interests: world politics> pak,obama,bangladesh, organizational structure, total derivative, partial derivative, given some PD to solve.did.

C:started GD (actually arrived late at the GD since I was the last to get the darn extra curr photocopies done- I yelled my apologies at a bearded prof when I got into the room and was given a paper to read. read it in like seconds and started!! the GD everybody was like “freaking maniac!!”, meant to be a stressy PI > but at this point my A PI was over>I was confident it's gonna be A> so wasnt really bothered too much in C PI. wait> C has a weird concept of doc check> mine wasnt over when i was called for PI>I actually got in, sat down and gave them my docs and said "check not over"> they acted as if i was a rat that took a bath twice a decade and asked me to get it done>i was thus the last for the PI (well the actual one ). I held my cool (wearing whites helps).Q's in PI : Newtons laws >first botched the order and the correct, ball thrown in marsh, apply 3rd law, defended when they said I appear to skew my priorities. Asked me to sing Jesudas’ song. I sang. He wrote down the movie name so that he can verify if it is indeed Jesudas’. My company>CEO,former CEO’s qualifications..etc.,,weaknesses>I said I will give an example>says no examples> gimme 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 weaknesses..I tell him problem addressing large groups>one says define large group>other cuts him and asks something else..best part is when they cut themselves …Man J haha

L: Below avg GD (The guy next to me started yelling from the point GO and there’s no way anybody could stop him..I had a headache that night..chill people..you could be killing people) PI was very good>asked how many times anybody asked me abt my switch from chem.>IT>MBA. I said it was the 3rd time including this> XL+Indore before> he says so gimme the answer you have> I give it convincingly>asks abt my family>my bros>my job. No acads at all.

I : Excellent PI, Good GD –PI Q’s. abt my letters to HINDU ,fav singers, my role as a TL (I started being a TL since I was 1.5 yrs old in the org holy)

K: average GD , dokey PI .PI Q’s: abt my company, chem. Industrial training I did at Hazira surat>asked me ppm of sulfur in god knows what gas> I was abt to say> he says careful I’VE BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT> I was like oh ok,,maybe 24 ppm or so (sweetened gas), looks at my NCFM certs>asks abt derivatives>gives me a problem to solve> I told him it’s a combo of puts and calls needed> I solve it on the upside of price rise but say “no idea “to downside. He says tough aint it? I say”heck yeah ! J

If there’s any aspirants reading this> my piece of mind

verbal: I've been one of those people who want to read everything. That helped my reading and writing skills. Verbal is about attempting more questions these days since there's 5 options. I left out only 1 question in CAT 2007 verbal

100% converts: I wanted to add this in my post but never did as I felt it might not go down that well. The mantra I think is being you when you talk to a prof. I tell you> I spoke to every prof in everyone of the interviews in a relaxed yet listening manner. I wasn't tensed in the PIs etc., For example when I spoke to 2 really senior profs and 1 HR lady in the IIM A panel, I spoke to them as if they're already my teachers. I humored around a lil and said ''don't know'' honestly and funnily. I think they're looking for people who know what this PI can mean to them and yet hold it. They see if you are the horse that can run all the way.

I also have pretty average acads but still managed to get through IIM-K - my lone IIM call.
I had a good GD and that might have gone in favour. PI was average

2) CAT - 2004 -- Dont Ask percentiles
--- The above two were non-serious CATs..But I scored less mainly in Verbal .. Realized that I need to pickup my reading habits..And prepare well
3) CAT- 2005 - 97.11 ( Breakup QA - 98 , DI - 89 , VA - 88 )
-- An out of the blue IIMB interview call.. WAiting List - 47 --> Kicks
4) CAT - 2006 - 98.08 ( Breakup QA - 90.28 , DI - 98.25 , VA - 96.8 )
Calls --> Nil ..Not even SPJ with a supposedly decent profile.

But I took a backup option at this point.. Got a nomination for PGSEM @ IIM Bangalore ( part time MBA with classes on friday & saturday ) from my Company- Oracle, Cleared interview and joined it along with work ..

5) CAT - 2007 ( couple of practice tests was the prep )
QA - 97.6 , DI - 93.17 , VA - 96.4
Overall - 98.62
Calls - L,K

L - Good GD, But pathetic interview. As expected, a reject
K - Fish Market GD , But great interview.. Convert ..
( Attended this interview bunking a PGSEM class )

-- After quite a bit of deliberation over pros and cons, joining IIMK PGP dropping PGSEM..Infact, Kozhikode being my hometown is another tempting factor..Will put up a bit more detailed post in The 'All I wanted to speak about CAT thread' )

Couple of Points to aspirants

1. Over the last few years I've gradually noticed one thing.Your PROFILE is becoming important..Ofcourse u can convert your call with an average profile too if you have a cracking GD / PI..But if you have a good profile, you can still make it even if the interview is average..So, make a point to do some profile building

2. CAT is a dicey test..Even if you prepare well, you might end up with low scores.. Be sure to have backup options

The journey to CAT is very long! Just keep ur focus! Even the best of us feel demotivated at some point of time. Just read an awesome book or watch a movie that inspires u, play ur guitar or do anything that interests u! I strongly recommend watching "Randy Pausch - Last Lecture" in u-tube.

CAT is not an 100m event. It is a marathon! Ability to persevere matters! All the best to all future aspirants!
