Re: Profile of People who have Converted their IIM Calls! -
07-05-2008, 12:17 PM
Hey puys
I have been going through this thread for quite sometime and I am very happy to finally contribute to it. I had a score of 98.8 in CAT 2006 and had converted MDI-PGPM, gurgaon. But I wanted IIMs hence I decided to take CAT 2007. IT was a tough decision and a gamble, which fortunately paid off. :new_bat_angel::new_bat_angel:
Name : Akshat Agarwal
Class X: 84.8 % (DPS , vasant kunj, new delhi)
Class XII : 84.2 % (DPS , vassant kunj, new delhi)
BTech: LIT, Nagpur Univeristy ( 78.7%), univesity silver medalist
CAT 2007 - VA : 99.73, DI : 99.69 , QA : 85.27 :tellme::tellme:, overall 99.70
Category - General
Calls - LI, MDI-PGPM, SPJain(Finance),FMS(FT)
Converted - L, I, MDI-PGPM, SPJain (Finance)
Rejected - FMS(FT)
Joining: IIML
I had great interviews everwhere, except FMS, where they werent even listening to me. They had actually decided to chuck our whole group after the GD.
Areas where I scored in the interviews were:
- Good Acads : Apart from being the university silver medalist, I had international publications and had won physics olympiad and international design competitions. They might have noticed this, but I was not asked much on academics in any interview. They asked me on physics in IIML and international design competition at IIMI.
- Music : I am a trained classical music singer and was asked to sing at IIM L, and SPjain. After I sang, the prof at spjain told me that he didnt wanna ask me anything else and that I am through. in my Indore interview, I was asked a lot on rags and effect of music on our body.
Lesson: U shud have one thing that interests them. I had music. I am sure you guys would have something else...
- Work-ex : 23 months of work-ex at ANSYS-Fluent. This worked tremendously in my favour as this company is into computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a research field in core engineering. My work at my firm was also sent for international publications , so that was one area where i scored in the interviews especially indore and MDI.
- Badminton : I was the college badminton team captain during graduation. Was asked some things on it, although the major stress was on music.
I would agree with the posts above, and say that the only thing that matters in CAT is the belief in your abilities and your confidence.
Some luck is involved in the written test, especially in the verbal section, but after that you have to do some soul searching and prepare your answers.
Two most important questions are
- Why MBA ?
- Tell me about yourself?
Answer these properly and you are done.
All the best to the future CAT crackers.
Cheers
Akshat

Profile
Xth(CBSE): 80.80%
XIIth(CBSE): 80.80%
B.Tech: 63.00% [from DAIICT, Gandhinagar]
Work Exp: 23 months [HP and Qualcomm]
Cat Attempts
CAT 2005: QA- 94.56 DI- 97.96 VA- 96.04; Overall- 98.96
Calls: IIM A, L, K
Converts: None
CAT 2006: VA-73.xx; Overall- 96.24
CAT 2007: QA-99.56 DI-97.41 VA-94.70; Overall- 99.64
Calls: IIM C, K, I

GD/PI rating
(CAT 2007):
I Good GD + Bad PI = W/L
K Avg. GD + V. Good PI = Convert
C Bad GD + Average PI = Reject
It has been a humbling experience. The soul-searching that was induced by CAT catalyzed a lot of things in my life.
Performance in CAT, as my ID suggests, has been capricious.
I was most prepared for CAT 2005, most motivated for CAT 2006 and least concerned about CAT 2007. It turned out to be just the opposite. :-)

Re: Profile of People who have Converted their IIM Calls! -

Hopefully this helps people:
Acads: Xth - 95.2% (ICSE)
XIIth - 81.8% (Maharashtra H.S.C.)
B.Tech - 8.03/10 (IIT Bombay Metallurgy)
CAT 2007 - 100%ile, (VA 98.93, QA 99.94, DI 99.99)
Calls- BLACKI
Decent extracurrics including winning several national level quizzes etc.
B - Okay interview, until I told them that I didnt like the job at the bank where I was placed which seemed to annoy them. Good GD. Convert
L - Good GD, interview was peaceful. Convert
A- Essay was so-so, not much time to think. Fumbled a lot during the interview and profs seemed to be laughing at my expense. Convert
C - I thought the GD was good until in the PI the profs. said ' You didn't seem to be listening to anyone during the GD.' and 'Why are you here? You don't look serious about this at all.' Convert
K - Decent GD. Bad PI, fumbled with basic vector stuff and was kicking myself after the interview. Convert
I - Didn't attend.
A few points:
1. Never try to evaluate your own interview, especially mid-way through it. I thought I had screwed up A,B,C,K but it seems my parameters for judging myself and the profs. for judging me were completely different.
2. Nowhere was I asked about my acads. The closest anyone ever got was 'Have you studied nanotechnology?' to which I replied 'No.' That simple. Be prepared with plenty of areas of interest.
3. Interesting questions from the C interview: 'Do you have a girlfriend? What does she do?' and 'Tell me all the times in your life that you have failed.'
Best of luck to everyone.

Hi all,
Its Prateek Gupta, converted the 3 IIM interviews that I attended. I was a little disappointed for not having a A call. In my opinion, I just had very average interviews and GDs but had a good profile which helped me in the end. But, I would like to add here that one needs to be self-confident and focused about their preparations. And try to have awareness about the world and all the fields which interest you.
Profile:
Name: Prateek Gupta
X th CBSE: 82%
XII th MP Board: 88%
B.tech : 8.6 , Electrical Engg, IITB
Work-Ex: 1year, Analyst, Equity Quants, Lehman Brothers, India.
Cat Attempts:
07
Percentile: 99.65 (Screwed in VA)
Calls: BLIK
Attended: BLK
Converts: K
08
Percentile: 99.92 (Missed out A because one mark in DI)
Calls: BCLIK
Attended: BCL
Converts: BCL
GD/PI Ratings:
B Avg. Interview + Good GD
C Avg. Interview + Avg. GD
L V.Good Interview + Good GD
Prateek
In the end, no dream is big enough to be a dream forever. :satisfie:

Hi Friends,
I am happy to post here after 3 years of just reading this thread.
Profile:
-------
X - Matric - 90%
XII - TN State Board - 95%
B.E(ECE) - Bharath Engg College(Chennai) - 81%
Passed out in 2005.
Work Ex - 35 Months
Extracurriculars - Interested in Organizing activities, Karate...
CAT Attempts
---------------
2005 - 85 Percentile[Took CAT very seriously with lot of hard work]
2006 - 92 Percentile[Was very confident in entering IIM before CAT]
2007 - 98.9 Percentile[Prepared well but not as sincere as the prev 2 times]
CAT 2007
---------
Calls from L and K.
Converts : K , L(Waitlisted) - Taking K
GD/PI
------
K - GD was very decent with no fish market stuff. PI was very good, was able to answer the way they wanted.
L - GD was better than K. PI was full of gyan from the professor about Ethics. Few questions on Current affairs that I missed out. A fairly decent PI .
With my percentile in '05, I shouldn't have even dreamt of IIM. But I was very confident that some day or the other I will be able to make it. And now it has happened with a bit of Optimism and God's grace.
Pagalguy has helped a lot in my preparation and I would like to personally thank the Puys for the good work.
To All My Friends who take CAT 2008, Wish You Good Luck and ALL THE BEST.
Cheers,
Prabaharan
