My 2 paise on GDPI:

1) Be yourself. Please do not fake anything, anything at all. Its ok if your hobby is watching Govinda movies, its ok if you don't read, its ok if you are coming to IIM for a great job, & not for enterprenuership/personal development et al. Though its not ok if your definition of a great job is just great money & nothing else.
2) Know yourself. You don't need to know all the GK the coaching guys tell u, you just need to know a little bit about your city, your college, your company etc.
3) Smile! Appear calm & keep smiling all through the interview, no matter what is happening.

Also, PI is the real thing, You can always thoroughly mess up your GD, & get through.(I spoke just once in my C GD). Though you won't get through if you are excessively rude in the GD.

Essay : Wrote a crisp essay. Was nowhere near the word limit. It was short, but good.

GD : Average. Was a pathetic case.

Summary : Couldn't complete. They were not sticking to allowed time limit. Stopped early.

Interview: Very good. Answered all questions.

Expectation : Sure admit. I am from Indore

Verdict : Waitlisted. Very Very surprising.

GD : Average. Was a one liner case.

Interview: Random Interview. I answered workex related questions very well. The prof grilled me on economics then. And I couldnt answer those confidently.

Expectation : BUMP.

Verdict : Very very surprising!

IIMB

GD : A good GD. I started it. But then it was an all women topic and a lady kept speaking througout. Had made some good points.

Summary : Wrote it completely. A good summary.

Interview : Vague interview. Profs looked very disinterested. Couldnt answer a couple of questions. Handled others decently.

Expectation : Was dejected as this was the best call. Wasn't sure on this one.

Verdict : Mehnat Rang Layee!

Two Cents:

CAT : Start now. you can never be early. Do the important bits first. That helps. and Be regular.

GD PI : Be yourself. Being artificial just gives you an unexpected exit.

The Comeback
Wrote all the national level competitive exams for M.Sc & Int. Ph.D.
results:
JAM : AIR-17 . JAM=Joint Admission Test to M.Sc in IITs.
JEST: AIR-61. JEST=Joint Entrance Screening Test for Int Ph.D in various Instis in India.
Cleared the exam of IISc Bangalore for Int Ph.D.

finally joined IIT K for M.Sc.

M.Sc(2 yr) :I.I.T. Kanpur, CPI-7.2.

After this spent/lost a yr for CAT preps..result zilch , VA -57 %ile
Joined a not-so-grrt b-school wssn't happy with it, so wrote CAT 07 while still in 1st yr of this b-school.

CAT score:
QA: 99.23,VA: 99.61,DI: 91.54
OA: 99.70.

Calls: Only I,
Results: converted the lone call .
Joining: IIM I (obviously) !!


Achievments:
-CSIR-UGC JRF in Physical Sciences. ( JRF= Junior Research Fellowship)
-Offered JRF in Physics by Institute of Mathematical Sciences,Chennai.
-Best Experimental Project Cash Award in Condensed Matter Physics Workshop at IITK .
- Got selected for the final round in B-Plan competition organised by TiE, Kolkata for TiEGER Cub Awards.
-Was amongst the Top 3 throughout High school n a similar case even in junior n nursery school !! (though I dunno if it can be called an achievment, but have loads of acads & xtracurriculars' certis from school).

Interests & Hobbies:
- Reading Novels and interesting articles about latest developments in Genetics and Neuroscience.
( I got hooked to these 2 subjects while doing 'eclectic reading' while preparing for RC passages in CAT)
-Dabbling in Graphology.
-Listening to music(too obvious)
- Watching Discovery & NatGeo.......just love 'em.


So.....
any CAT aspirant reading this, plz note inspite of my poor marks in grad, I sailed thru the PI at IIM, n converted d lone call.So ppl having poor/avg acads or who have messed up at some pt. of time in life, like me(in grad), need not worry .
u have lots of chance; if I can, so can U.

Lesson: All u need is clarity abt ,wat u r, n where u want to b in life.
Just b honest in PI, n with a bit of luck, u'll sail thru.
