Re: Profile of People who have Converted their IIM Calls! -
02-05-2008, 01:43 PM
By heaven, at last at last - I get the right to post in this thread. Spent so many hours reading the profiles here, just trying to figure out what it takes to be in an IIM. My profile here will give hope to quite a few with not so outstanding profiles. Here it goes -
Xth - 88%
XII - 78.7% (Both State Board, totally Bengali Medium)
B.tech in IT from unknown college (Institute of Engineering & management, Kolkata). CGPA - 8.01/10
2.5 years of IT exp with CTS & IBM.
Extra-Currics - zilch
Previous CATs
CAT 2004 - 98.41 (VA 99.84, DI 92.94, QA 65.33 )
CAT 2005 - 98.73 (VA 95.05, DI 96.47, QA 96.43) - IIML & MDI calls, IIML not converted. Didn't bother about MDI.
CAT 2006 - 97.16 (VA 97.26, QA 95.45, DI 82.84 ) - SPJIMR call, again not bothered.
Finally CAT 2007 - 99.73 (VA 98.53, QA 97.2, DI 99.37) - ACLIK, MDI, SPJIMR, IIFT
GD/PIs -
K - Avg GD + Avg PI - Converted
I - Avg GD + Good PI - Converted
L - Excellent GD + very Good essay + boring PI (10 minutes of nothing) - Converted
C - Not so good ATM + Excellent GD + very Decent PI - Converted both PGDM & PGDCM
A - Pretty Good essay + No Idea (Hit Some Sixers, but got bowled quite a few times too) PI - Converted
GD/PI experiences -
IIMK - http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/985543-post20.html
IIMI - http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/1014168-post104.html
IIML - http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/1017832-post194.html
IIMC - http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/1038948-post113.html
IIMA - http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/1109794-post156.html
Finally, word for future aspirants - Work hard, but work smart. Be well informed, not only about the world, but also about the MBA entrance process. It helps for sure. CAT is generally easy, if one can put in regular smart work, with PASSION. GD/PI is different. It's so much subjective, it's futile trying to analyze GD/PIs. Just try to be yourself. Only idea I got from my converts - perhaps the profs can look through and see the desire within you, your desire to be a student again. That attitude is all I think. Otherwise, someone with my profile, converting the best B School in Asia Pacific, I still can't believe it.

Re: Profile of People who have Converted their IIM Calls! -
02-05-2008, 04:15 PM
I'm fortunate enough to be able to post on this thread in my first ever attempt at CAT. Thank you, O Lord Almighty !
My Profile :
Schooling :
Xth :
CBSE, 85.2 % (From a school for the gifted, judged on MENSA standards). Scored 98 in Sanskrit, 95 in Maths.
XIIth :
Maharashtra State Board, 84.17 % (PCM 89%)
Graduation :
BE (Information Technology) :
Pune University, 66.0 % Aggregate (Distinction, This places me in the 95th Percentile.)
Placements On-Campus :
Cognizant, Persistent, ZS Associates, GS Labs and Symantec.
Extra - Curricular :
Excellent extra-curricular profile. Was the general secretary of my college, won several national level programming competitions, project competitions and quizzes. Represented the State at the Intel Science Talent Discovery Fair 2003. Also play a fair bit of Tabla and listen to loads of music. Won the State Talent Search scholarship twice and several maths competitive examinations. (This, alongwith my abysmal CAT QA percentile just defines Irony, dunnit ? ) To sum it up : really really good EC profile.
A Screwup Called CAT :
VA : 99.77 %ile <--- This saved me. Got me an I call that I converted.
QA : 85.23 %ile
DI : 90.56 %ile
---------------
OA : 98.41 %ile
Calls : IIM-Indore. I did not appear for any other exam except CAT.
GD and PI :
Please Read my GD/PI Experience h e r e ([2008] IIM Indore GD/PI Experiences).
Result :
With a lot of patience, some hard work, and some luck - I made it to I.
My Comment :
Although all the IIMs claim that they give massive weightage to your CAT score while giving final calls, trust me - they don't. Basically, that weightage is only to ensure that those SC/ST(and now /OBC) candidates who get abysmal scores on their CAT (and still get a call), and perform better in GD/PI than a GEN CAT student won't get a GEN CAT seat. This is just a measure to ensure that both qualitatively and quantitatively enough candidates come through these quotas. So if you have a 98.xx %ile and a call from any IIM for a GEN seat, just do your best in your GD/PI, and you'll have an equally bright chance of making it, as compared to a 99.xx %iler. Trust me, I made it.
Indian Institute of Management, Indore.

Re: Profile of People who have Converted their IIM Calls! -
02-05-2008, 04:40 PM
****** The POWER of 2 ******
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
6 IIM's (when i gave CAT 07) = 6/2 = 3, got 3 calls for interview
3 interviews ( I, K and L) = 3/2 = 1.5 = 2 (round off) - made it to Indore and Kozhikode.
In short - thats my STORY!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for the profile!
Its a long list for me:
- Schooling: DON BOSCO SCHOOL GUWAHATI (65%) (1998 BC)
- 10+2 : GUWAHATI PUBLIC SCHOOL (65%) (2000 AD)
- Dropped One year - wanted to become an IIT-ian! Never made it - so next year gave all entrance exams - got into a REC ( now NIT's).
- Engineering : NITK Surathkal (KREC) (2001 AD - 2006 AD) (65%)
{ Flunked in many subjects many times and had a year loss due to excessive drinking during jaundice ! In college drank lots of beer , smoked grass , watched lots of Vivid videos , listened to lots of hard rock , was a prankster } - Work life: now W S ATKINS, Bangalore
{ weekends are beer and beer! nothing else.... life was hell when i took TIME coaching - evening time classes on SAT, so had to drink less on that day - early morning classes on SUN .... aargh! And during the 20 MOCK CAT's that I gave - 6-7 were given with heavy hangovers after excessive consumption of Romanov or Smirnoff or Sharktooth or KF Strong or sometimes RS full khambaa! That was my life before May 1st and is still the same afterward!! Kutte Ka Poonch Kabhie Seedha Nahee Hota Hain}
{ Still i studied for CAT, just took 1 weeks leave before the exam and did lots of papers - MOCK CAT papers actually.. that helped. Studied hard during the day, went for jogs in the evening - then drank beer in the night and got sloshed! }
Well friends - thats it! Myself dissected!
 ...... anytime!
