Re: Profile of People who have Converted their IIM Calls! -

Well I am nothing short of ecstatic while I am posting on this thread. Like everyone here on PG wanted to post on this coveted thread ever since I first came in contact with this awesome place. Any ways here goes the dirt:
Acads
Xth - 86.66%
XIIth - 74%
B.Tech - 8.04/10 (7th Sem), Fresher
CAT Scores:
QA-93.17
VA-97.67
DI-98.53
OA-99.16
Calls
Well when i checked my CAT score, I was told "Sorry, your name doesn't figure in list of any IIM's". Obviously was quite sad. But out of blue IIM-K came out with some additional list and I had my name in it. Wasn't aware of it and luckily it caught eye of a friend of mine who promptly informed me. Finally the calls i had were IIFT(36.27),FMS(MBA FT), MDI-PGPM, NITIE-PGDIM, XIM-B and IIM-K.
Well I attended all GD/PI's. It was a bitter-sweet experience. Interestingly the only GD/PI about which I wrote was the IIM-K one. (Hope you guys get my signal )
Results
After hectic GD/PI's it was turn for results. IIFT was 1st to reject me. Later on I got a letter from them about me being waitlisted for Kolkata campus. Next in line to kick me out were FMS & NITIE. Then came out XIM-B saying tata-bye bye to me. Finally MDI came out where i got waitlisted at 133 (eeh... some respite, finally got cleared ). Finally came out IIM-K.....and rest is history
Finally joining IIM-K PGPM
P.S: Here is my IIM-K intvw exp http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/cat-an...ml#post1014191 ([2008] IIMK GD-PI Experiences)

Wanted to post year since the last 2 yrs, now I have the opportunity
Acads
Xth - 95.3%
XIIth - 93.5%
B.Tech - 8.75/10
WorkEx
2yrs in embedded software.
CAT Scores:
QA-99.23
VA-99.20
DI-98.53
OA-99.86
Calls
BLACKI
GD/PI Experience (Self Assessment, out of 10)
B: GD 8, PI 7
L: GD 9, PI 4
A: Essay 5, PI 7
C: GD 6, PI 8
K: GD 4, PI 7
I: GD 8, PI 8
None of my PIs were stress. Was asked on a variety of topics including Electronics, mobiles, signal processing, my work, my family business, my extra-curriculurs, Ramdev Baba, Melody Choclates, Agrasen Ji, Pepsi Coke etc.
Verdict
Converted: ABCLI
Waitlisted: K
Just doing some post-result analysis here. I think we give less importance to the GD that it should be given. Even though interviews carry a lot more weightage, GD is the 1st impression on the interviewers.
As Anil Kapoor says in the recently "bombed" movie: Phirst Imprassun izzz thee Lasht Imprassun

Hi everybody,
Here's My profile and calls:
Acads:
Xth: 86.7 TN Matriculation
XIIth: 95.1 TN State Board
Grad: 8.17/10
College, Year: NIT Trichy, 2005
Discipline: Electrical and Electronics Engineering
Extra Currics:
Pretty decent: College Placement rep, Many quizzes, Dance, Drama etc
History:
CAT 2004: 98.56%ile and No calls from IIMs
CAT 2005: 95.91%ile and obviously no calls. Got tensed during the examination and screwed it up.
CAT 2006: Was full enthu and thought will crack all 6. Member of DT'06 too. But got 99.81%ile with a 79%ile in DI. Again No calls from IIMs. Converted SPJ, NITIE and IIT D. Did not join. Withdrew from SPJ on the last day.
CAT 2007: Working on US MBA applications and gave CAT for the heck of it. Luckily got 99.81%ile with all 6 calls! Past preps definitely helped.
CAT Percentiles:
QA: 99.00
DI: 95.64
VA: 99.73
Overall: 99.81
Work Ex:
L&T Design -> 6 months
L&T Sales -> 16 months
Milagrow, A mgmt consulting start-up, directly reporting to CEO, good work -> 7 months
Total work ex: 29 months (My strongest point and my differentiating factor)
Calls: BLACKI + S
Attended: BLACKI
Converts: ABLIK (WL 31 at A which got converted)
Rejects: C
Joining: A
A:
Essay: Pretty shoddy work
PI: Very mediocre
Verdict: WL 31
Did I expect this? : No. I was expecting a reject
What would have attracted them: Probably my work profile. No idea still.
B:
GD+Essays: Good job done. SOP/Form was very good.
PI: I would say extremely good. Spoke very passionately and convincingly. They looked pretty impressed. I had clear thoughts on MBA's, Career paths etc
Verdict: Selected
Did I expect this: Yes
C:
GD: Good
PI: Pretty good and chill.
Verdict: Reject
Did I expect this?: No. I thought it will be a easy convert.
What would have bugged them: I asked about culture at C and asked the reason why its pretty chill etc. They became defensive. I felt it was a bad move from my side. But still feel an interview must not have been judged by that. Rest of my interview was chill. I could not figure out any other reason for reject.
L:
GD: Crappy topic. All spoke non sense
Essay: Again crappy topic and crappy essay
PI: Boring and uninteresting. Fully on economics. But did okayishly on a few topics.
Verdict: Selected
Did I expect this? : Not initially. I was initially expecting a reject. Then heard students with high percentiles usually convert L. Then became optimistic and thought will convert L.
I:
GD: Business case study. My strong area. Cracked it majorly.
PI: On my L&T technical work ex and Tamil Nadu history. Did decently here for sure.
Verdict: Selected
Did I expect this: Yes
K:
GD: Fishmarket. Told some 1-2 good points
PI: Really good and it was a clean sweep. I almost interviewed them for our start-up. Too chill. They treated me like a mature guy and gave due respect to my work exp etc.
Verdict: Selected
Did I expect this: 100%. I had no doubts. I told my friends that everyone may reject me, but not IIM K.
How things went for me:
My strength was the forms. I had clarity of thought on what I wanted to do and my work exp etc was very good. So, where ever I filled forms, and more importantly the panelists read it seriously, I had good chances. They formed a biased positive opinion about me before interview started and it made my job easy. It happened majorly at K, to some extent at B and I. A and C, surprisingly did not bother much about the form and that was disadvantageous for me. L form was pretty useless for me since no qns had to be answered.
My 3 strong points:
-work ex (job profile: start-up, mgmt consulting, reporting to CEO etc + L&T work ex)
-Can speak very well. No problem in conversing/communicating.
- Very good idea about all post MBA careers, MBA life, types of schools, how I want to achieve whatever I have set out for etc. So, typically they would not have heard any kiddish answers from me. (I had worked on preparing for an US MBA and it usually requires a person to have a good understanding of all this.)

Acads:
Xth: 95.5% Karnataka State Board
XIIth: 93% Karnataka State Board
Grad: 79% Visveswaraya Technological University
College, Year: BMS College of Engineering, 2005
Discipline: Electronics and Communication Engineering
Extra Currics:
Pretty good: College music team, quizzes, trekking etc
CAT Percentiles:
QA: 93.17
DI: 89.53
VA: 98.93
Overall: 98.20
Work Ex:
Total work ex: 35 months with a leading automotive firm as a Senior Software Engineer and Project Integrator
Calls: B,L
Attended: B,L
Convert: L
Reject: B
B:
GD+Essays: Form went through a lot of reviews. Was pretty impressed. GD was a boring topic. So, nothing subjective.
PI: Very satisfying. Didn't feel like coming out of the hall. Lot of philosophical talk(which I personally like)
Verdict: Reject
Did I expect this: Sort of (after an analysis of the interview once I went back home)
L:
GD: Very nice topic. Very healthy discussion.
Essay: Wrote a solid essay. (This must have clinched it)
PI: Here is the link <link>
Verdict: Convert
Did I expect this: No. The PI was too short about 8-10 minutes for it to be convincing.
How things went for me:
This is my 3rd CAT attempt. Had some disappointing results previously. Made a conscious decision to draw a line between work and preparation. This helped me stay focussed and push that extra little bit.
My 3 strong points:
- Clear and precise communication.
- Work ex (had a lot of end customer interaction and handled a complex team)
- Very clear about why I wanted a management degree (probably the strongest).
Most people think that the last point is only for answering during the interview. Absolutely NO!! If you are clear on this, you can convince anyone.
Converts: IMI (PGP), IMT(PGDM-IT), NITIE, SJMSOM IIT-B, TAMPI, NIRMA, DOMS IIT-M, MDI (PGPHR), NMIMS, IIM-L

Acads:
Schooling fairly standard (CBSE throughout)
College: UDCT Bombay, Chemical Technology
Extra Currics:
Pretty good: College band, Organized quizzes, Class Rep, Hostel Co-ordi, etc
CAT Percentiles:
Overall: ~98.5 (don't remember my splits right now, but about 80 odd in Maths, with 99.9+ in Verbal)
Work Ex:
Total work ex: 18+ months with Intellectual property outsourcing
Calls: I wonly
Convert: I
How things went for me:
Actually was really into my work and didn't prep for CAT to the extent that I could / should have. Gave CAT twice earlier (in college), pretty much OKish except for Math (my bugbear). A tough math paper ensured that the cutoffs were reasonable (translation: I cleared them )
Just happy at being back in College after nearly 2 years of corporate ghisoing...
At least I survived it

Hey ppl,
So I also get to post here. How cool is that. Mods please excuse me, I posted something on the 'results delayed' thread ??:
Profile----
CAT-
OA - 98.88
DI - 96.27
Quant - 98.02
VA - 92.87
B Tech(CSE) - CGPA 10.0 (upto 7th sem, NIT Allahabad)
12th - 95.4(CBSE)
10th - 91.8(CBSE)
Work Ex - Fresher
Extra Curriculars-
Quite average. Singing, and a host of little things which I've tried my hand in one time or the other.
Calls - B
Attended - duh!
Converts -
Experience:
GD - was pathetic. Had very few points to contribute, but were decent. Summary was pretty good so that should've helped me in the GD
PI - was really good. Was a nice casual conversation with a dash of humour.
Verdict: Selected
Did I expect this? Well honestly I thought it would be a close call.
My strengths:
-One has to be honesty. They were a little shocked with the way I was answering.
-Humour and the way I was treating the thing a little casually. I thought it would be detrimental, but it seems they liked it. Maybe perhaps 'cause my panelists were quite young.
-Dunno if this qualifies, but the guy remarked in the end "It was really fun interviewing you". That gave me hope.
Oh and yea, they were impressed with my acad record as well. Wanted me to do MS at Stan
Thus goes my story.
