Well puys, this is an emotional moment for me.. .. So thought of giving you all a detailed account of my CAT journey....T'was my third attempt after all....

1st Attempt - CAT 03

CAT %ile - 96.5 .... ...Was supposed to be best prepared for this one....

Calls - Nil (as expected) .....B probably dint have crazy short-listing criteria back then.. ...No offence meant....

2nd Attempt - CAT 05

CAT %ile - 99.06

VA - 99.xx
QA - 97.xx
DI - 83.xx ... ...Screwed up big time....

Calls - A lone K call
Rejects - A, B, C, L, I, MDI, NITIE, SP Jain....(Expecting to get a call from MDI, NITIE, SP Jain et all with a measly 83 in DI, huh...??... ...)

K GD/PI melodrama - (6th Feb, 06)

My lone call and I reached late for the intv process.... ....Ran up the stairs of the CPP block (IIM B)...just to see the rest of the candidates walk in for the GD.....moi was held back.....Dreams shattered.... ....(10:40 a.m.)

However, the panel was kind enuf to consider me in the afternoon slot....

time - 2:15 p.m.

GD/PI started

GD - Had a satisfactory GD....3-4 entries...made a couple of valid points...was well accepted by the group.....

PI - Gang-R***d .... How can u expect to be late for an IIM interview and get away with it....???... Was the last one to be interviewed....the interview process culminated at 6:45 p.m... ....Was exhausted, worn-out and broken.... ....Had not had a grain of food thus far....dint feel like either.....

Converts - Nil (dint expect either)

3rd Attempt - CAT 06

GD/PI experience :

A : avg GD , horrible PI ( selected purely on profile , i guess . Had left the extra-currics column in my form absolutely blank )

B : avg GD, avg PI ( but got a feel after my interview that i would get thru, and did )

C : avg GD, avg PI ( PI went on for around 30-35 mins, they asked me all they could, and i answered almost everything. but the feeling after the interview was not good )

L : avg GD, avg PI ( they just discussed bihar ( my home state) throughout the interview, i accepted things were in a mess over there. nothing brilliant to talk about )

I : bad GD, horrible PI ( too much acads. but gave some good answers to a few general awareness qns. )

K : avg GD, avg PI ( PI started with the panel smiling and me confused, and eneded with me smiling and the panel totally at sea . )

My opinion :

1. your academic profile matters a hell lot, not as much in your rejection as in your selection. I mean, you can afford to make mistakes if your marks back you up .
2. for ppl with work-ex, acads do not matter, not even at IIMA
3. Please do not give any dumb answers in the PI. "Don't Know" is acceptable, "Bill Gates heads Apple" is not !
4. General Awareness questions matter much more than acads ones.
5. Beg Lady Luck to kiss you on both Cheeks, before a GD/PI.

its an emotional moment, so please excuse me if i put in some extra things(that should ideally go to the all i wanted to speak..CAT thread), Here is something that might motivate a few( having fears of acads or extracurrics, or contemplating about whether to give it, .. i mean your dream another try or not) -

Background-
did all my schooling through hindi medium(UP Board) schools in a small town of Uttarakhand, took a 1 yr gap after 12th and finally made it to MNNIT CS(batch of 2001-2005)

10th - 81.2 %
12th - 76.4 %
BTech - 74.5% (it was hovering under 65% till the end of 2nd year)

Appeared in CAT for the first time in 2004.
CAT 2004:- QA-99, DI- 99, VA- 88.9, overall- 99.
didn't filled any other forms n didn't get ny IIM call either.

Joined Wipro and again filled the form..could not prepare at all, here is what i got -
CAT 2005:- QA-96, DI-98.5, VA-78, overall- 94

Totally forgot about CAT n thought about it again in AUG(when i was serving the 2 months notice period in wipro for joining in ORACLE)

Remembered the smallest things that i have ever done and added a few more points like skits in company etc.. without any certis. frankly it was a shame to put them as extracurrics against the God-like ones that most of call getters have. But I'll say that in the end, all this hardly matters.. what does matter, is you.

A-avg- PI, excellent GD (was not allowed for GD coz of coming too late, had my PI first n GD in the afternoon.. this bad impression killed my PI)
