GD-PI performance
K
Bad GD - spoke a few times but didnt add any value to the discussion.
Good PI - Was more a HR interview - very general questions (gave me a few situations and asked me how I wud react) - no tech/current affairs/awareness qs. (lasted for 20 mins)
I
Excellent case study - was far more comfortable with a case study than a GD
Good PI - Started as a HR interview then tech and then GK..
Believe Indore has this set pattern on what kinds of questions to ask/ what areas to test.. There were many closed ended qs - did not know the answers for quite a few. I was able to handle the tech part to a certain extent but gave up after a point when the questions started becoming too specific (read tough). GK questions were from whatever hobbies I had written. I had written watching english movies as a hobby so a few questions abt James Bond movies - who produces them, who all have starred as Bond.. didnt know much - have never seen any Bond movie to date. (20 mins)
C
Terrible GD - I started off before the three minutes given to us was up - spoke a sentence and then looked at one of the panelists and asked if I could continue or if I had to wait for a signal before starting - all three panelists appeared irritated - one of them said I ought to have waited for a signal before starting (in an angry tone) but I asked me to continue. I spoke the same sentence again but was immediately cut out.. spoke later a few times in the GD - summary was nothing great. Overall a miserable performance.
Good interview - Started off as a stress interview - as soon as I entered one of the panelists shouted at me to close the door properly. The other two did not look at me for the first 30 seconds and were speaking among themselves - when they did look at me they seemed they didnt like the look of me.. one person asked me if I knew anybody who'd finished his interview in under 10 mins. later on asked me if I knew anyone who'd had a stress i/v. Questions then abt my work, my college and abt me. No tech though they threatened they wud ask me a lot of tech questions at the start of the interview. (~25 mins)
L
Good GD - Contributed to the discussion
Bad Interview - Again like Indore even L seems to have a pre-decided pattern as to how to conduct its interviews. The first 5 mins was HR. Next 10 mins was tech - questions were from OR and Optimization techniques- didnt know answers to any of the questions.. I kept varying my replies between I dont know, I dont remember, not able to recollect...After 15 mins when they asked me to leave I asked if I could speak for a few minutes (big mistake) abt my job. They said OK and allowed me to explain what I did at work - dont think made much of an impression though. (20 mins)
Final admits - C (PGDM - did not apply for PGDCM), I, K
Rejects - L (they apparently felt I had not done any studying in college which is true to some extent:smile:
My two cents
Each IIM uses the GD/PI process in its own way. I, L use it to find out if the candidate has a clear understanding of the basics (they believe 10 mins is enough to evaluate this), I also to find out if the person has some general awareness. K wants people with experience and its enough if u perform beyond a threshold. C, I guess wants people who they feel are good enough overall (mature, confident, decent profile, decent extra curriculars..).
It is not that PI has more weightage than GD - both are tools to evaluate a candidate and its just that its easier to use the PI to evaluate a person. GD is used more often to reject candidates - those who do not speak at all or who dominate the discussion without allowing others to speak. To get through u need to perform decent enough in the GDs at least not commit any mistakes like dominating the discussion but perform well in the interviews.
And more than anything u need a lot of luck that the panelists dont ask u questions from subjects that u have not prepared!
ATB to all. Me joining C PGDM.
