@kailash... i followed an advice that almost everyone on PG gave me for VA....I tried to maximise my attempts....though i'm forced to spend less time in DI and QA as a result of that, but my VA scores have improved drastically! So no matter what order i choose, i always give max. time to VA!! Probably you can do the same, though, eventually both of us need to improve our reading speed!

Although my scores fell whenever I gave VA max. possible time, my percentile improved! An example could be 0917 and 0915. I used the same strategy for 0914 and i bet i could have scored atleast 20 more marks had i given 20 more minutes to DI and QA....but the target being CAT, that isn't what is required. U eventually need to clear the 25% mark in all 3 of them.

Hope this could be of some help!

Re: [PG Premier League] Mumbai Dream Team - 28-07-2008, 11:49 AM

I have a serious problem as far as the solution of Q. 2 is concerned.

The Question was:

Find the remainder of (2^1783)/73.
(a)7 (b)9 (c)4 (d)2

I mean how can they expect anyone to analyse in such a weird way.

There are several other options to solve the given problem(Fermat's theorem for one)
But the solution they have given is absolutely nonsense.

Can anyone who solved the sum share their tricks with all so that we can come across any easier approach.

I will start by sharing my approach:

I used the Fermat's theorem and applied it to the problem.
A breif overview of Fermat's for those who do not know it.

If the denominator is a prime no. then any non multiple of that prime no. raised to the power of (prime no. -1) will give a remainder of only 1.

Example:
Let the prime no. be 3 then (2^2)/3 we get a remainder 1
This holds true for all prime no.s

I used this approach in the paper.

The prime no. is 73
therefore 2^72 gives a remainder 1.
Also it should be noted that since 2^72 is 1 it implies 2^36 will also have a remainder 1 and so will 2^18 and 2^9(You can check it out for yourselves).
So effectively i can re write the given no.

2^1783 as 2^1782*2 = 2*(2^9)198
So the remainder will be 2

I know its a far stretched solution but if you are aware of Fermats theorem you can easily solve it.

The solution given by TIME asks you to perceive a lot of things beforehand.

The one using Fermat's theorem is an approach which will never go wrong.

I am still open to any other method which can solve the sum in a more easier way.

Wink Re: [PG Premier League] Mumbai Dream Team - 28-07-2008, 01:14 PM

hey mavericks...had a much better mock this time around...though a better time management wud hav helped as for my verbal is concerned...
my scores for AIMCAT 914 are as follows:
Q - 12A, 11R, 1W - 10.66 (approx 1 hr)
DI - 22A, 18R, 4W - 16.66 (approx 55 mins)
VA - 18A, 11R, 7W - 8.66 (30-35 min)
OA - 52A, 40R, 12W - 36

started off with Quant...tried to spot the easy q's in first 5 mins...wasnt able to find it tat well, got tensed, so gave it up and started solving the easy questions tat i had managed to find...solved those then some random questions...realised i had spent 2 much time...so moved on...missed out on some real sitters like tat division set, decagon -star angle, rectangle-shaded area...
moved on to DI, solved 1st caselet...then cricket LR, Interconnected roads set, DS and last set...again spent 2much time...but happy abt it...made 2 silly mistakes...
then for the last section...was a bit unnerved by the unconventional pattern...took time to search where the was sentences for questions...lost my cool..so messed it up...time management wud hav helped...but alas...

overall a satisfying mock...especially after last 3...

Okie I do it as ..

73 * 7 = 511 = 2^9 -1

express 1783 = 2 * 2^9x
giving remainder = 2

Abt 0914....

Had a look at the paper & realised immediately that this is going to be a speed round while taking care of ur accuracy. Also it was kinda obvious, with 40Q galore in each section, the proportion of sitters would be higher than usual & all I had to do was find em & solve em correctly. Chucked out my QA , VA interspersed strategy for a straight 45/45/45. + 30.

Started with DI. Had a casual glance & noted the VR qs at the end. Decided to start with that. Confidently solved VR + cricket + roads qs. Every thing going gr8 till now. Time well within control (13Qs - 20min). Started the binary logic walla set & then hell broke lose. Almost got to the end, but things didnt fit. In the hindsight I should have walked away from the q at this point of time, but jus couldnt let go. Eventually solved it but after putting in abt 25 mins End of DI

Moved on to QA. Did abt 13Qs in 45 mins. MArked a few to come back later. Was kinda satisfied with the way things were moving.

Did VA last. Did almost entire VA except the Passage I qs & some other arbit q. Last 30 mins given to QA to solve 4 more qs in QA.

My scores
VA - (21C,13W) = 16.66
QA - (11C, 06W) = 9.00
DI - (9C, 8W) = 06.33
OA = 32

Disappointed with the scores . With the unusually high proportion of sitters expected a lot higher accuracy. Could have easily attempted 5-8 more qs in DI.Wont clear QA & DI for the second time in a row

Learnt a very very important lesson in ego mgmt & btw I got that entire stupid binary logic walla set wrong...

abt CL Mock CAT 3

The usual 75Qs with +4, -1
I heard some where that CL ka VA isnt that gr8, not in par with time etc etc .
Gleefully I attempted all 25 ...
... and got royally mauled. Guess I outta give CL a lot more respect from now on.

As for strategy: I continued with DI first & QA + VA interspersed. All in all a ok paper. marginal improvement in QA accuracy while made a quite a few silly mistakes in DI.

My scores

VA - (9C, 16W) = 20 (Man, that hurt!)
QA - (9C, 4W) = 32
DI - (6C, 7W) = 17

OA = 69
Dont know what to make of it

Weekend Scores:

The SIMCAT 4 experience:

DI – 11/12 – 40.5
QA – 9/11 – 33.5
VA – 9/20 – 19

OA – 93

It is really disappointing to see IMS compromise on their standards this way. Ever since they’ve gone the TIME way and increased the number of SIMCATS, these things keep happening. I’m referring to the VA section. When I read the explanations, I felt like laughing. At most of the places, their logic is really weak whereas at some interesting places, they’ve somehow managed to contradict their own logic – Eg – ‘gender discrimination has not been mentioned in the passage, hence option 4 (option 4 had gender discrimination mentioned!)

I have written them a mail offering my heartfelt condolences and have wished them…ahem…a speedy recovery (and if you think this is sarcastic, you should read my mail).

I also got one of my math questions marked incorrect but I’ll let that be as it could’ve been my mistake but the VA section (especially the solutions) is worth archiving.

The AIMCAT 914 experience:

QA – 15/19 – 13.66
VA – 23/35 – 19
DI – 21/24 – 18.66

OA – 51.33

This was hardly an experience. I do not even want to get into the pointlessness that was this test paper. Period.

PS: Hats off to the guys who take 2 tests back to back. I was literally doodling in the last ten minutes of the TIME mock…not a very good way to spend your Sundays…blech!

E.

Hey MMDT puys,

Can we possibly have a group mock dissection after every mock on Sunday ?
We can choose a place convenient to most.
