Q.29.
I got it... The error most are making is....
75, 85, 90 -> 60+15, 60+25, 60+30 => min. 60 if (15+25+30) < 40.
15+25+30 itself is 40+30. So atleast two is (60+30).
Solution :
Take the largest two values: min.overlap b/w 85 and 90 = 175-100 = 75.
so min. ans is 75. now min. overlap b/w 90 union 85 and 75 is also 75.
Only 1: 15 + 10
Only 2: 0
All 3 : 75
PS: I am not sure whether I'm very clear or not. Q.30. Max of (80,90,100) = 80 (Exactly 3)
Now 50a,40b,50c are to be divided in two parts... (Overlap with 80)
50+40+50 / 2 = 70
e.g. {50a+20b} + {(20a+30c)+20c}
50a =overlaps with= 20a+30c
20b =overlaps with= 20c Oops/Yahoo !!! TIME answers are actually right /

29th was a bit tricky...Now the %ages are actually 100,80,50,40,50,90..Now the deciding factors are 50,40,50 since 5 out of 6 details should be available. So max of two out of these three to be available simply distribute them as (50+40+50)/2 = 70..Now rest of the figures 100,80 and 90 are > 70..So safely 70 is the maximum. Now if one of these is less than 70 say 60 then it should be (50+40+50+60)/3 and so on..So after every calculation just ensure to check if all the other percentages are greater.. | | | | | The Following 3 Users Say Thank You to selebratinglife For This Useful Post:

To Shashank, Ashwani and others!
The credit for my better scores in VA goes to Varun, he is the man. He kept motivating me and forced me to solve those sets he sends. I have solved most of them, I also solve the VA questions which come on PG, especially the ones from medulla and piscean.
I went for a different strategy. I did VA first this time. ALl the VA questions, the one markers, para jumbles, grammar and para completion, vocabulary, etc then I did two RCs.
Then I went for Quant and DI
( My usual way is quant VA and DI)
And still I keep trying to solve good questions which appear on testfunda NL. They give good questions, also old mocks, especially if you can find old sims !
@ Nakul : Implex theory of three consecutive questions is that if you solve three consecutive questions in a paper correctly in one go, then either you are a topper or atleast one of them is wrong ! | | | | | The Following 6 Users Say Thank You to implex For This Useful Post:

Moi two paise : The only way to get over in VA is lots of reading..In last year AIMCAT's I used to miss VA cut off 1 in almost every three and some times every alternate..Over a period of time I grew out of it . The only panacea is reading habit. The more you read your intuition gets better. This time around I hardly missed any VA cut-off oh ya only one in the 9 mocks this season..There is no way out except the hard way..So try to make reading a habit..And believe me you'll be amazed..It can only get better. | | | | | The Following 5 Users Say Thank You to selebratinglife For This Useful Post:

@gvi..
Q35 is my pick of the paper. As tricky as can be.
Hint: Here you have to read the sentence as a whole without breaking it into two. And a statement is a lie if even one part of the sentence is a lie. And it can be the first/second/both.
Now try solving it. | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to milindagrawal For This Useful Post:

for those who are struggling in VA section.........should try solving
some 20 -30 sectional va test...........by alloting a maximum of 45 minutes........
and if the test is easy reduce the time to 35 min.....................
though reading newspaper will be definitel helpful,but also do some- 2-3 rcs
per day............time is also providing gud rc link...........the point is do read some
abstract thing.........in cat 07 there was not even a single passage on general topics.....if one can get hold of previous mock of any institute (any will do)...and attempt the
english section religiously in 45 minutes alongwith proper analysis........everything should get in place | | | | | The Following 3 Users Say Thank You to maverickk_7 For This Useful Post:

Just went through the last odd pages and man!
Not one score <100 except mine
Anyways, i feel the main reason most of us preform below par in VA is RC.
Most of the passages are boring and it is difficlt to focus. Many simply leave the passage after reading the first few sentences. This amounts to loss of precious seconds which can be put to better use somewhere else.
Try reading articles of all sorts daily.
To improve concentration I would suggest yoga. Find a quiet place and sit with your eyes closed and count from 100-1 backwards. Will take just 5 minutes of your time, but after the exercise, a smile would appear automatically on your face. For short passages, read the questions first. You can spot the answer quickly with practise. And yes practice, practice as much as you can. Read anything and everything you get your hands on.
Make it a point to read atleast 5-8 pages of any good English newspaper, preferrably The Hindu or TOI, every day. Make it habit.
All the best to all! | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to gvi.shekar For This Useful Post:

Q.54 in 0912 Facebook retreats on online tracking - International Herald Tribune
If you look at option C it is oddly out of place !!! Either it should be CEBD or you cannot form a "coherent paragraph/passage". C implies you are going to say something more about Facebook.
Any Comments ?

From Today onwards I will take one concept session( may be once a week), mostly on topics of my choice, but if you guys have requests you may pm me and I will try to post one on it.
Lets start Concept I Perfect Squares There has been a huge surge in the number of questions about perfect squares, in almost all mocks. The basic trick to any such question is assuming the number as a perfect square of an integer k and then using techniques of completion of square and then the formula of (a^2-b^2) and solving using divisibility theory
Example I Find all n such that n(n+16) is a perfect square
step 1 n(n+16)=k^2
step 2 (n^2+2.8.n+8^2)-8^2=k^2
step3 (n+8+k)(n+8-k)=64
see now lhs and rhs both are integers then both of (n+8-k) and (n+8+) are divisors of 64. But note that we add the two equations we will get 2n+16, so teh sum of two divisors should be even hence both divisors even or both odd
so n+8+k=32,16,8,4,2 and n+8-k=2,4,8,16,32
but see this n is positive hence k is positive, thus n+8+k>n+8-k
so only two options
and solving we get 2n+16=34,20
so n=9,2
Note : The source of this problem is Pomona Wisconsin mathematics talent search exam! Practice problem!!
Find the sum of all such positive integers m's such that m^2+25m+19 is a perfect square
Now we will extend the method to other kinds of problems
Basically what we used in the above problem is difference of square method lets take an example
x^6=y^2+127, find the no of pairs of postive integers (x,y)
first step in this problem is recognising that 127 is a prime
then we move to
(x^3+y)(x^3-y)=127
so clearly 2x^3=128 x=4 and y=63
so one pair (4,63)
