CAT 2008 over

I dint eralise tiem is flying so fast, seems just like few days back when i wrote CAT 2007 in Kolkata (read changed from Delhi coz of ITC )

CAT 2008 - it started off with loads of motivation, dedication and yeah desperation (to leave Chennai). Joined IMS classes, joined CL series and what not. Then alas, i lost it all. People from PG who are close to me know that i dint study even for a sec during tehese 9 months i have been here in Chennai , missed many mocks just coz i dint wake up , never got serious for so called toughest exams to crack. I am not disappointed though, i think i am not ready for an MBA (though if i would have cracked it and got A/B/C, would have surely taken them).

D day - with some efforts in last 8 months (wouldnt say 0 coz i gave atleast 8-10 mocks ) the attitude with which i went for the paper was "I have nothing to lose". Saw the instructions and was pretty sure that my chances were already bleak coz of VA having 40 questions, but still i was pretty cool. As already mentioned it was a horrible start after having a huge argument with the invigilator (if i catch her somehwhere, shes gonna pay for it ). As usual started off with DI and it seemed to be a pretty doable paper to me, i acutally thought DI was as simple as it could have been and was pretty close to last years DI paper (though general consensus gives a diff picture). Next was VA for me, as i had decided i would attempt as many questions as possible and hence i was on a OMR shading spree in next 25-30 minutes. Went to QA from there where i realised that CAT 08 is done for me (with my total attempts 8, out of which 2 were flukes) , still thought the show should go on and finally attempted 2 RC's.

Same evening i did check my scores, which are okayish, nothing gr8

QA - 17
DI - 54
VA/RC - 30

Total 101

Now, after 2 CATs that too without preparation and doing okayish both the times i realise that

1) its not a question how good you are at maths, logic, english but to a large extent how good are your time management skills, how good can you handle pressure, how you react to different (unexpected ) situations, which would be all good qualities of a manager.

2) I have the capability to rip apart CAT - though some may disagree (just that i need to study a bit more, and have a hold of all concepts), u wont believe what question i left in QA - What are the last 2 digits of 7*2008

I am not sure whether i would take any other paper or not, but for all of you i would just say CAT 2008 is gone guys, its over, dont carry over the sentiments of cracking it / not cracking it. IIMs are not end of life, there are better B Schools.

Also, CAT / MBA is not end of life, theres much more to life than MBA /money et all (gyaan )

And Finally i think i mite again go for CAT 2009 (just going there without studying is a different experience, none of you can ever experience that, its a challenge and i think i have done fairly well last 2 times )

PS: Murty hope its not a hasty decision, and you have done enough IM on this )
Cheers

MK

"But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done"

So, puys, lets get going and crack IIFT!

Some things I'd like to share-

Last Sunday is past. However you performed, has no influence tomorrow.Even if you have done extremely well, be wary of VA. So, it is important to do well tomorrow.

IIFT-2007
It had 150 questions in 4 sections. No sectional cut off was mentioned and it turned out that only overall score mattered. Cut off was 29% approx

IIFT-2006
Weird question paper. Most sections had 'multiple correct answers' with marks only if all correct answers being chosen. Very difficult, cut off was 20% approx

I just wanted to show that IIFT can have very different question types, unlike other non-CAT exams. Note this fact and expect the unexpected.

GK might be there most probably. If sectional cut off is not mentioned, be judicious. For most who arent very good at GK, I'd advise keeping this section last. (Unlike popular perception, it isnt very easy for commoners)

How I did IIFT last year.
Since there was no sectional cut off mentioned, I chose to jus go through entire paper, picking up easy ones all through the way. QA was moderate. DI was a bit tough (calc intensive) VA and LR were easy. Wasted time in GK. I was still left with 15 min. Went back and did more VA and LR. Scored 44 odd ( was the highest in PG )

The lesson- If there is no sectional cutoff, run through entire paper, jus doin easy/doable questions first. Section wise planning/ time allocation doesnt work.

I have a gut feel that it might be a 120 to 140 q's type paper with last yr like pattern and no sectionals, who knows.

(Reason for speculation: I speculated to Nishant and Maverick in the Chennai PG meet, "Imagine unequal sectional weightage in CAT.. Its something not done recently and it could come as a surprise" Bingo! Hence I'm speculating in public this time. Lets see if it works

All the best, Do well.

P.S: Sorry for the late post. Was busy with many lectures and quizzes

Hi
Though i am not a member of this team, I want to know if there are plans by anybody to start with GD/PI preparation.
I would certainly like to join if there are any plans.

My projected scores:
QA - 51
DI - 38
VA - 34/39
Total : 123/128
