2) But Ashok Kumar, a Bharat Petroleum dealer, in Autonagar, swears they are.
3) In another instance of broken gender barriers, a few petrol pumps in the city are employing women in jobs so far considered to be male bastions.
4) There is business interest involved too - men are given to wayward behaviour, women are more committed, particularly in dealing with large amounts of cash.

Please please explain with proper reasoning
thanks for providing fij's which i hav been looking for a long time to try my hand at!
Anyways for the first set,it is JJFJ- As it is clearly visible that second statement of the first set is a jugdement because it talks about future and even does not give any logical reason for saying so.Thus it is a Judgement And the only option that contains second statement as Judgement is JJFJ.So no need to see other options.
And for the second set of fij's,
it is JFFI
This is because 2nd & 3rd statements are facts as they can be verified(Facts are those that can be verified)
And 1st statement is not along any logical reason why they wud draw ire of feminist by calling women a whiff of fresh breeze.
And last one is an Inference as it is given that "buisness interest is also included" along with a logical reason that "women are more commited and ..."(because inference contains a judgement along with a logical reason for saying so whereas a judgement is only an opinion without any logical reason behind it)
Hope u like the explanations

The answer options given by T.I.M.E are IFIF & IFFJ am really skeptical about these options still

Re: PG Premier League - Chennai Dream Team - 08-09-2008, 03:46 PM

Let us just revisit the definitions of the FIJs here.

Fact - Verifiable piece of information.

Inference - Drawing a conclusion about the unknown on the basis of the known.

Example - I believe XXXX because of YYYY(fact).

Judgement - Opinions that imply approval, disapproval

The best thing about him is his style

Now, let us go through the sentences.

1) Sustained lobbying by the West Bengal Left Front MPs has paid off.

Here, the author tells us that he feels the sustained lobbying has paid off.

I don't see how that could be an inference in anycase. I am not making conclusions here, just passing an opinion. I'd say this is a judgement.

I am not drawing information, but passing my judgement over an event.

@ exile - sample this: The media has been lobbying for something. A few important demands have been agreed to, which I feel is good enough to say that the campaign has paid off. Now would you call that a fact or a judgement?

2) The government will soon make it mandatory for government agencies to use jute products for packaging and other purposes.

Fact

3) The government's move is aimed at boosting the jute industry, which is one of the mainstays of the West Bengal economy .

I'd say this is a judgement. The question to be asked here is - What is my opinion of the government's move?

Time says that an inference has been drawn.

The way they see it, it sounds as though the govt's move is aimed at boosting the jute industry because it is one of the mainstays. I guess the fault lies here.

If the sentence was The government's move is aimed at boosting the jute industry because it is one of the mainstays of the economy, I'd say it is an inference. But here, I'd go with judgement.

4) In the past few decades, the jute industry had come under tremendous pressure from the synthetic sector, as their products were seen as being not only cheaper but also safer

Fact

1) You could well draw the ire of feminists if you call them a whiff of fresh breeze in the dusty environs of fuel stations.

If you do this, this could happen. Inference.

2) But Ashok Kumar, a Bharat Petroleum dealer, in Autonagar, swears they are.

Fact

3) In another instance of broken gender barriers, a few petrol pumps in the city are employing women in jobs so far considered to be male bastions.

Fact

4) There is business interest involved too - men are given to wayward behaviour, women are more committed, particularly in dealing with large amounts of cash.

Author's opinion not based on facts. So, judgement.

This is my way of doing the FIJs and I got a few wrong only yesterday

I believe Time's answer for the first one is wrong.

Cheers,
Srikanth

Srikanth dude

I would agree completely with all the reasoning except for the above

Isn't the underlined part opinion of the author? IMHO, It should be a judgment too Isn't it?

Now one another thing! Shouldn't the conclusion what we infer must be rock-solid i.e., it shouldn't be subjective.

Hope I find answers from you guys

tumne pukara aur, hum chale aaye

Nice to see everyone trying to rack their brains on the FIJs here. Well how about taking up an elimination approach?

For Question 1.

Let us forget about the First and the third sentences for the time being. You can easily see that the 2nd one and the 4th one are facts. Look at the answer choices, it leaves you with two options, 1st and 2nd. Now let us come to the third one - The author says that the government's move is aimed at boosting the jute industry, which is one of the mainstays of the WB economy. This I see as an Inference. I don't think this is a judgement. How?

The government's move - which move? The move to make it mandatory for government agencies to use jute products for packaging and other purposes.

is aimed at boosting the jute industry- how? Jute is the one of the mainstays of the West Bengal economy. Any move which makes it mandatory to use jute products will obviously be a boost to the jute industry. wouldn't it be so?

Hence the author is merely drawing an inference here.

Now you have the 2nd, 3rd and 4th sentences as FIF. Look at the answer options, only answer choice 1 satisifies it. Don't bother to find out whether 1 is a J I F U D I etc..

I think the second one has been explained already I don't know if my explanation helps, but that is how I try to unravel the mysteries of F I J's. I just try to eliminate the choices most of the time. Ultimately what counts is whether you marked the correct option, not whether you could detect if each sentence was a Fact, Inference or Judgement.

And yes.. I happened to score 55 in VA yesterday But please don't ask me OA score

Cheers..

You could well fail your exams if you don't study

I am drawing the conlusion on the basis of an event. I say that if you do this, this will happen. When I say that I would not approve of you doing this, it becomes an opinion.

Hope this makes things less hazy

Yes, the conclusion must be rock-solid. But the problem is when the sentence allows for multiple meanings.

Sample this:

You could fall sick if you eat too much oil.

You could see pigs flying if you travel in an aircraft.

The first makes sense as an inference, but the second one would fall more into the judgement domain.

The firs sentence is conventional reson. Eveyone knows it, so we mark it as an inference. The second one, well is garbage, but we'd mark it as a judgement.

Think about it.

Srikanth

This may amount to spamming, but.. what the heck!!

@mave and murthy, awesome explantions dude!! I really appreciate. Nice to see VA stalwarts chipping in to help the mere mortals.

Can someone post the SC questions also? I have a few doubts in that as well. Got 3/5 wrong yesterday.
