Finance or marketing????

hi guys,
Though dis may seem to be a very silly ques, but i hv no other option den to ask it to PG junta.
Actualy i m very confused bout whether i shud go in for marketing or finance???
Can anybody plzz help me out by giving me some ins nd outs of both so dat i can make a final decision of vich one to go for.
For ur info, i am a software er.

Actually depends on ur interest..
If u r a "creative" , "witty" guy.. and r comfortable with generating new ideas.. stuff.. marketing shud b the choice..
But if u r comfortable with business accnts, shares, numbers,.. go for Fin..

Sometimes.. it helps if u get an insight into the course structure.. try n read some stuff related to what fin teaches u.. what mktng teaches u..
what is there in Fin.. which is not in mktg.. and vice-versa.
i am sure..after that.. u'll b in a position to decide .. also try n speak to some management student with a similar background..

there are other things of PG in india
like Operations research
Systems
General Mgmt
Services

so just concentrate on the first year where they teach all
and then u can easily choose the one or two of ur choice
i said 2 coz u can always have dual specialisation

i 've been knowing u for a quite long time, i think u shud go for marketing , u can do a lot there. and especially the bschool u r joining its better for u to go ahead with marktg.

adding to this query.. a person from a software background has more scope in which field Mktg or IT/Sys.. havent got good reviews about IT/Sys... ppl dont really prefer this field...

If somebody can elaborate on what is taught in IT/Sys it would b GR8

Its career prospects are that u can be chief information Officer or u can work as a consultant or analyst in an IT firm or a company with great Research and development .


I THINK this shud give u n idea of It/ Systems.

Well Marketing i think evryone of us knows is all about selling urself ( be it to promote ur brand/ product/ advertising etc..) here u need to have effective comm skills and indepth into consumer behaviour/ market trends/ time and place of ur product launch plus alot many factors which u will learn in ur course during MBA.



well there is no question about that if u r a software engg. whether u need to go for IT/ Sys or MKTG. its ur choice, ur interest and ur life, somebody cannot judge ur tastes and tell u to follow that.
whichever field interests u , go for that. don't think u don' know anything about that field, u r going for an MBA to learn in that field.

well this is just my perception .. based rather on personal choice than on sound,in-depth analysis ..
Fianance or Systems seem to me to be the fields having more of substance .. especially if you consider quant and anal skills to be ur forte .. somehow marketing to me seems not so attractive .. esp coz i think what u will learn at the b-school is just a part of it .. ur inherent soft skills are what will decide ur mettle ..
heard this talk in my company from world renowned marketing guru .. venkatram ramaswamy(he is a colleague and co-author of many books with CK Prahalad) .. at the end i want to say i wasnt much attracted by the field

agree with what u say...but dont u think that going into Systems will restrict my scope... it would revolve around IT industry only and u may get stuck in a field...
also in Finance u have to compete with CA and all and becomes difficult as they have an edge over u...

but again as anuj said all about personal prefernce and one need to look around more to make that final choice

hi folks,
i wonder why only marketing and finance.
what bout HRM,Operations,Systems.
i fell finance is good, but u need to compete with guys from economics streams, and guys doing CA.
marketing, i feel, depends more upon ur creativity and has less to do with knowledge.
but HRM is my personal fav.
it requires a good mix of everything like vision, creativity, people management and u need to be an amateur psychologist.
