Yup. Read this in TOI.
Stupid move, I would say.
Here's why..
More test takers mean more money from forms, which should be enough to cover the expenses for more centers, invigilators, security, scanning of papers and other expenses.
The online test, if it follows the pattern of the US exams, would mean there would be different questions for each person and that would mean a permanent question-mark on the validity of the ranking of students.
Also, tests with different questions can be used as an indication of the student's aptitude, but in no way can they be used to rank the students and assign percentiles.
That would mean IIMs would have to do away with percentiles as a basis for shortlisting for GD/PI and would have to resort to shortlisting on basis of marks (controversial if adaptive test) or consider individual applications (counter-productive as the stated reason for the shift is the complications coming up due to large number of test takers).
Also, CAT is a great leveler and a computer based test could put some candidates at a disadvantage.
Agreed, CAT doesn't follow a specific pattern when it comes to difficulty, topics, marks etc but the paper based test on the Third Sunday of November is part of tradition and should not be done away with.
So, CAT should not change....we loave it like this
I see a whole new market for CD based tests now.
Budding enterpreneurs rejoice.
