I have studied in IMS and Erudite (Salt Lake). Both have pros and cons as given below:
IMS:
Pros:
(1) Classes were very organized. They gave schedule of the classes at the begining of the session (i.e, 5 modules) and followed the schedule religiously. It shows their professional attitude.
(2) They have organised test at the end of each module which was good for revision.
(3) SimCats are All India level, hence you can judge your performance among large number of aspirants.
(4) Incase you miss any class, rescheduling is not a problem.
(5) Workshop was organised at the end of 5 modules. The standard of the questions were very good.
(6) They gave many question papers (ace cat and classic cat).
Cons:
(1) Teachers were not friendly. Specially Maths. He used to mock students in the class if they expressed any doubt. In our batch we had BA and BCom students who needed some extra care from the teacher, but he never helped them. Also he used to show partiality to students who were good in Maths (including me), but I didnt like this attitude. No one in our batch was happy with him.
(2) English teacher was not as rude as maths teacher, but the quality of his teaching was not good. After 1 month, no one used to attend his class. Later they changed English teacher, the next teacher (Sighania sir - IIML passout) was good, but it was already late. Please inquire about the faculty before you join. Also I heard that camac street faculty are better than SL faculty.
(3) I was not happy with the quality of study material given by IMS (Maths, DI/LR and English). Its not as per the CAT standards.
(4) The quality of questions given in module test, ace cat, classic cat, etc was not up to the mark. I didnt even like the IMS SimCAT questions. Only the Workshop questions were good (total 15 workshops).
Erudite:
Pros:
(1) They conducted 20 simcats which started much before the IMS simcat. And it was conducted every sunday till the CAT exam (in Nov). It was good for practice. Also, the quality of the questions were good as compared to IMS simcats. Specially Maths and DI/LR questions.
(2) The study materials given by Erudite were excellent. Concepts, examples, questions, etc were good. They gave Home Assignment 1 and 2 for Maths, DI/LR and VA. Quality of questions were at par with the CAT standards. It helped me a lot in CAT preparation.
(3) Quality of class room study was better than IMS. Everytime I used to learn something new. They presented different approaches to the problems.
(4) Helpful faculty. You can clarify any doubt on Maths, DI and English if they are available.
Cons:
(1) Total lack of professionalism. They didnt gave any class schedule at the begining of the course. At the begining of every month they used to give class schedule and the schedule was really hapazard. For example, if Algebra 1 is scheduled on 20th May, then Algebra 2 will be scheduled on June 25th. There was no logic in the class schedule.
(2) Scheduled classes were cancelled or rescheduled without any prior notice. According to them, it was the responsibility of the students to call them before every class. Total lack of communication. My batch strength was around 10. If any day only 1-2 batch members are present, then they used to cancel the class.
(3) No practice question papers were given (except 1 or 2 just before the CAT exam). For that also they didnt communicate, I received it after CAT.
(4) If you miss any class, then its gone. You will be lucky if you get it rescheduled within 1-2 months.
(5) Erudite simcat is limited only to eastern india. Hence, student base is less. You cant judge your performance in all india level.
Times:
I didnt study in Times. But what I got from my friends (who were in Times) is that Times SimCat is good as compared to IMS or erudite simcat.
Conclusion: You can go for IMS class room coaching. That way you can maintain a strict schedule for CAT preparation. But get the study materials of erudite and practice from it as per IMS schedule. Bottomline is that, you have to prepare on your own. Class room coaching is good because you get to interact with many aspirants. It motivates till the end. But preparation wise, you have to do on your own, I think no teacher can help in this regard.
Thanks,
Rajib
PS: These are my personal opinion for Salt Lake branch only. I think Camac street branch is the main branch for both IMS and erudite. Attitude of faclty members may be better in Camac street than SL branch.
