I missed the IIMS call. I think IIMS didnt have any other option but to come up with this selection criteria. Lets analyse why IIMS is asking for 80% in undergraduation when even other IIMs (except IIMB) and other top colleges dont have such stringent selection criteria. (My personal view, you may differ)
IIMS goal: They want to select the best 600 aspirants for GD/PI calls who might not have calls from other IIMs and top 10 mba colleges this year.
Lets understand that this year IIMS is not competing with top colleges in India but with the colleges who take aspirants in the percentile range of 85 to 97. IIMS wants best 600 aspirants in this range. Lets understand that no one will leave other IIMs, MDI, NITIE, SPJ, or other top colleges who have years of experience and expertise with them. In its first year itself IIMS cant compete with these colleges. But since its an IIM, hence definitely it will be able to compete with the next rung of established colleges (IMT, TAPMI, IMI, etc) and its targeting those aspirants. After analysing all the profiles, might be they have found that this 80% UG marks is just a criteria which helps them in finding such profiles. Also taking into consideration the infrastructure of IIMS and the time left for conducting GD/PI, they cant call more than 600 aspirants (may be 1:10 ratio is around 600).
Hence, I think there is no problem with this selection criteria and I dont think there would be any positive outcome of sending them mails.
Thanks and regards,
Rajib
PS1: We may be able to validate this if its possible to go through profile of all call-getters.
PS2: This criteria is definitely not fair for those students who come from colleges who are not good in awarding marks. But I am facing this problem from the time I passed 12th. Its always difficult to compare marks from different boards (cbse, isce, state boards, etc - syllabus is diff, marks scheme is diff), different colleges (obviously 60% in pune university is not same as 60% in some other university where marks are awarded generously). But we have to live with it till the time we dont have any standard marking scheme accross the country. Also I cant blame IIMS for this because they dont have any means or any statistical data which will show that how much marks in various universities are comparable (its all subjective). So, I think the criteria IIMS has selected is valid from their point of view. | just add....
ppl with 80+ in grad in any college could be considered "have good acads"
such ppl become easy to place later on
PS added later) i still believe that the 80% criteria is very INSENSIBLE

I am going to mail them asap... request fellow puys to mail/call them regarding this issue.. lets build up some numbers and strengthen this initiative... after all we all aspire to be leaders one day... time to show our mettle... lets get organized puys... | I have sent the following mail to ibn live.
All those who think that the selection criteria has been unfair please do send a mail or call at this and/or some other media contact number.
Sub - Unfair selection at IIM Shillong!!!
Madam/Sir,
Please allow me to convey the agony of thousands of aspiring candidates of IIM Shillong, through your esteemed and effective medium.
IIM Shillong(RGIIM), the newest in the list of prestigious IIM's, which is suppose to start its first ever batch in May/June 2008 came out with a list of shortlisted candidates today.
However the selection criteria given on the IIM Shillong website has kept the cut off at the undergraduate level at illogically high level of 80%.
This is in spite of the fact that the CAT 2007 brochure as well as the IIM Shillong website clearly mentioned the requirement of undergraduate marks at 50%.
Moreover there are many universities in India where even the university topper does not get 80% marks.
Myself and thousands of other students like me will be highly grateful of you if you please cover this issue involving unfairness and illogical approach in IIM Shillong admissions so that the admission committee is pressurized to take corrective measures.

Whats the use of taking the CAT,if you are using such a stringent criterion for the selection. In my university even the university topper does not gets more than 72%.
I think this is not fair in the diverse country like India where, every university has different criteria of giving the grades. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
