P1: So how do we go about starting a s/w project?..
Moi(out of the blue!!!): mentioed about the different models available..
P1: So when is the lifecycle model chosen?
Moi: it's mostly an idealistic model.. not used much practically..

GD: 7 Members (2 Absent), kamachabbra was there in my group….
GD topic as mentioned above..(abt Dogs)
started the discussion, tried to give structure, but was cut by a so called smart guy, who spoke for 1 minute abt case facts only, overall came in around 7-8 times..gave some original ideas like…adoption program for dogs, setting up dog farms, abt funding of the solution that grp was providing..and the killer suggestion….mentioned about…exporting dog meat to korea…as there is a big market in Korea..once we start the breeding program of dogs..gave some more points about short term and long term solns….overall satisfactory performance for me….

After the GD we were asked to summarize and finish the 2 Questions in 10 min. Many people were not able to finish all the questions in time…I finished all 3 Just in time….wrote abt Bapuji

PI:
4th to be interviewed.

Panel consisted of 2 profs
Profs told us that..PI will last for 15 mins…which was very true in most of the cases.
P1, P2, M(Me)

P1: Gandhi..i see….tell me the difference between Gandhism and Gandhigiri?
Me:(Hit wicket)…hmmm..Sir, Gandhism is following Gandhis Priciples and beliefs of non violence for protesting against a particular cause….whereas Gandhigiri is also similar..except that it’s a recent concept….and its more to do with fighting the current evils like corruption etc in a non vilent way…
P1: so u want to say both are same?
Me: yeah in concept they are almost same….
P2: U r a Delhitie….rite..core delhite…and u must be understanding Hindi
Me: Yes sir
P2: teel me the connotation of the word “giri”…like dadagiri etc..is it negative
Me: Yes sir, its negative however in case of gandhigiri its not..coz it was just a phrase coined in Munnabhai MBBS keeping in mind the audience…and its appeal..and even in movie…the so called gandhigiri implies positive connotation only….(thank god I have seen the movie…. J
(I think they were trying to confuse me that gandhigiri is negative….. )
P2:Ok
P1: ahh I see NSIT…..whats it full form
Me: Sir Netaji subhash institute of technology…(was praying..that I don’t want any question related to Netaji now…..)
P1: what was its earlier name and why was its name changed..?
Me: DIT(delhi institute of technoclogy), name changed by govt, so as to appeal, and cater to needs of its supporter (basically political mileage), or for doing something in memory of some famous personality, for example RGIIM…
PI:So u r a computer engineer…or computer science engineer.
Me; sir computer
P1; Whats the difference…?
Me: Computer science …more application oriented course…as compared to Computer…and in comp science they have languages like Java
P1: so u must be also having some other language….
Me: oh yes sir, c++, I mean to say, its more of IT applications oriented…
P1; Now u r working as a consultant…are u using any of ur comp engg fundamentals?
Me: Yes, I am into technology consulting, and told about my work, and how I use tech knowledge…and explained my work profile in detail….
P1: tell me onething..whats the difference between a patent and copyright?
Me; Patent ..protection for an idea…copyright protection for piece of literature, artisitic work, software..etc…and mentioned their duration and other details(it was related to my work)
P1:If I develop a security algorithm, then can I patent it?
Me; yes u can, though in India algorithms as such cannot be patented, but if embodied or implanted in a system/apparatus, then it can be done…..(gave some more funde..here)
P1 to P2..i am done..now P2 takes over…

P2; tell me something abt sonia vihar water plant controversy..
Me: (stumped…tried re collecting it for 2-3 seconds) delhi has acute water shortage in summers, os delhi govt has come up with sonia vihar treatment plant, and the issue is regrading, haryan govt not providing water(yamuna0, as demanded by delhi govt…
P2:nodds….are there are some other issues ?
Me; Sir I don’t remember…
P2: Ok, what are the issues about the Hyderabad and Bangalore airports?
Me: sir, these airports are in a PPP(Public private partnerships), in a BOT(Build operate and Transfer) model, Hyderabad:GMR…
P2:Bangalore, by which private partner..
Me; I don’t remember sir, is it GVK, no I think GVK is in Mumbai..
P2: Its siemens..continue…
Me: issues are….1)user fee..whether airlines pass on to passengers…however low cost airlines, not ready to do that, as already not so profitable, will lead to further trouble, and low cost carriers want the user fees should be charged from passengers at airport…2) whether old airports should shut down…govt signed a contract acc to which old airports will shut down….however now there is a resistance from unions of AAI..3) accesability of these airports from cities…4) these airports will function to around 90% of capacity from start..which is very high…and there is a trend in US to have more than one airports in major cities….etc….9it was arnd 3 mins of non stop gyan)
P2 & P1, Ok thanks
Me; thanks sir….

I think it was okish..lets see….

Workex - 20+ months in IT Services @ Noida

Interview @ IHC , New Delhi - 20/3 - 1400 hours
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The process goes like this:
GD: 10 minutes to read a case + 20 minutes to discuss in which one of the member has to summarise the discussion (member has to be chosen by the group) + 10 minutes to fill a form which comprises of summary of the discussion, most influential person from 20th century in your opinion and why, lastly your career goals and where does PGP from IIMB fits in?

My case was about a ban by the Union Health Ministry on scenes in movies which depict smoking and therefore, the movie fraternity was pissed off at this... there were questions that why not go ahead and curb the tobacco production...
we had to discuss whether the ban was right or not? and Should tobacco production be curbed?

Now, 20 minutes is simply awesome! no one was bothered whether he/she will get a chance to speak or make a contribution...It was a good discussion discussing how the ban limited the creative freedom of the moviemaker and a blanket ban was not desired...then we discussed that curbing the tobacco production is also not feasible as the govt. has vested interests in it...farmers, corporates all angles were brought in...and awareness in the society and making film fraternity as an ally in the fight against tobacco were seen as possible solutions...

My performance:
started the GD and introduced the case...a few points here n there...then introduced the tobacco industry wala aspect...raised a few questions...and when around 17-18 minutes had passed kinda summarised the discussion and asked the group to come up with more suggestions to implement the solution...
on more thing...there was one guy out of us 9 who didnt speak even a word...towards the end, I asked the group to take his inputs....the group responded well and even the guy made one decent point...I don't know how it works with the GD protocol but I went with my gut feel...

decent performance I would say!

PI:
I was the first one!
P1: Old Lady Prof
P2: Young Male Prof

P1 had my application form with her!
P2: So Sumit, how would a friend describe you?
Me: described and used the word - peacemaker (how signifcant was this, you'll get to know!)
P2 then aksed questions on how would you go about resolving a conflict between two friends...I specifically mentioned that I am normally quite objective in my opinions and then I was all blah blah about getting to the root cause, hearing people out, providing them with a vent to let out what was bothering them and understanding each other's perspectives...

P1 then asked me to explain my job profile which I did decently
P2: Tell me one creative work that you have done in your job.
Me: told about the logo competition that I won and it was selected to be used as the logo of our project...
P2: Do you know what IIMBs logo means?
Me: recalled that It says 'Tejasvina Vadhi Tamastu' and told them thatit was also a part of my prayer at Kendiya Vidyalaya...and as far as I remember, it means - "take me from this darkness to enlightenment"...don't know the exact meaning though!
P2: nodded. (so I thought I was close to the exact meaning.)
P1: noted that I had mentioned about two awards for team work during my workex...gave a few situations and asked me how would I go about resolving/managing them...
Me: built upon the 'objective' quality of mine and gave relevant examples from my extra-currics and work-ex...
this discussion revolved a lot about understanding people...so P2 then tells me about People Quotient and asks me how should I judge your PQ?
Me: I tell him that a group activity would be perfect for it...and that would give you good insight to how i perceive others and how am i recieved by them...
P2 nodded...

then P2 mentioned that We agree with your idea of conflict resolution at micro level...but what do you think of how US goes about taking decisions in Nuclear power nd energy sector wrt other countries?
Me: I said that in earlier cases I was assigned with the role of achieving the task..on the other hand, no body has assigned US that role...brought up UN and how it should be the right medium for such decisions...
P2: but then reality is different!
Me: agreed and then substantiated how UN can be more assertive and should have done something when US went against its wishes and attacked Iraq...
P2: Do you believe in majority?
Me: Yes, sir.
P2: then what about the minority rights?
Me: Explained that decision-making bodies are in existence because of this...related the quality of 'being objective' to this and said that even if 80% agree to harm the rest 20%, it's not right...
P2: but that is majority by numbers...what about when u vote nd stuff?
Me: I didnt get the difference but explained taking Ganguly's example...that 95% junta would have said that he would not come back in the team but he did and scored good runs in both formats of the game! so, majority based o baseless reasons or emotions should not matter...the majority should have good reasons to back itself!

nd then Thanks You's & Good Byes!
-------------------------------------------------

very feel-good...I was totally myself in making those hypothetical decisions in there...rest I could relate their questions to my experiences...so overall very satisfied with the whole process!

I am done with my interviews...
time to unwind and parteeeee!

Good wishes to all of you for the interviews and then the converts!
April 11th---The countdown has begun!

P.S: Tejasvi Navadhitamastu means - May our Knowledge become brilliant!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good Luck buddy.

Re: [2008] IIM Bangalore GD/PI Experiences - 04-04-2008, 12:18 PM

Hi,
Here's my IIMB experience

Date: 3rd April - 2 PM
Center: HMATC, Mumbai

Profile:
Xth: 75.33 (U.P Board)
XIIth: 81 (U.P Board)
Grad: 8.75/10.0 IIT KGP
work ex: 18 months(ANSYS)

CAT: 99.07, BIKS

GD: 9 Members (All Present)
An IT Company CEO soon going to become the president of NASSCOM. In his company an Female Employee was raped and murdered by a taxicab driver. He is facing charges for being her employer and not able to give security. Should he accept guilt or not?

Discussion was fairly organized. May be because of the time available (20 min) everyone could talk properly and we could summarize well in time. After the GD we were asked to summarize and finish the 2 Questions in 10 min.

A satisfactory case for me. I could make at least 5-6 decent entries and gave original points. Written a decent summary.

I was the 7th person to be called for the interview. This was the first interview of my life in which I was not stresses (Not even a little bit). As I have written Mahatma Gandhi as the most influential person, I was in the mood of Do or Die.

PI-
Panel consisted of 2 profs (one of them a lady) (LP, MP) and me. I do not remember all the conversation.

MP- What is XXXX (my company)? (naam bhi nahin suna tha unhone).
Me- Non-stop answer of 3-4 mins about company and about my rsponsibility. No interruptions in between.

MP- How big the company is, competitors and about the other questions about the company, like when it got started etc.
Me- I said that the company is world leader in simulation industry. And other answers----they seemed satisfied.

Now I don’t remember that how I managed to change the direction of interview towards my writings. I told them that I am a good writer and infact have developed some theories

LP and MP- ohhh yea….give me some example-

Me- First I explained my first theory (for around 3 mins)…few counter questions but I explained properly.
Me- Would you plie to listen to my second theory.

Both-yes ….tell us

Me- explaied for around 4-5 mins. They seemed impressed. And few counter questions, gave me some situations and asked me how this theory is going to behave here, I gave satisfactory answers.

MP- Ok now I have few questions for you. Why did you join ANSYS?
Me- It’s a core company, and I want to work in it.

Mp- Is it a campus placement?
Me- yes.
Mp- Don’t you have other options? Like wipro, tcs etc.
Me- I have many options. As ansys came to my campus on 21st feb, and placements has been started in December, I could have opted for many other companies, but I have decided to join this particular company much before, so I did not sit for any other company. Even I have prepared Heat transfer by my own just to crack the test of this company, and topped the placement test.

Impressive-----

LP- But many chemical, aerospace, etc join these type of companies (wipro, tcs etc)
ME- yes maam its true, even I am the only one from my department who is in the core job.

LP- Why don’t you try for MS or MBA at that moment?
Me- I want to work with this company for 2 years. So I did not even given other options any thought. I wrote the CaT that year also, but was not serios about it.

LP- So why not MS why MBA-
Me- gave some answer-

Lp -it is a very general answer. Tell me something specific-you can continue working with this company itself.
Me- (I forget what I told them, but it was more or less satisfactory)

MP-So now you don’t get excited about your company-
Me- I like my work at my company and I am excited about it….but I like management more.

Mp- Your academics are very strong-
Me- Smile

MP- What is this…how you pronounce this (my city)..and is the spelling is right?
Me- told.

MP- Every city has something famaous about it---what is famaous about your city-
Me- told..they seemed impressed.

Lp- so you are one of the very few iitians fro your city.
Me- I was the first one when I cracked it. Now I want to be the first one you cracked IIMB.’
Lp- How you prepared for IIT?
Me- At home. My father did not have enough funds to send me to any coaching.

Impressed.

MP- R u married or single?
LP- Why you are asking this?
Me- I am single.
Lp- did you get shocked by this question?
Me- No maam

LP- Ok Tarun, its nice to talk to u.
Me- The pleasure is mine. And I am really honoured to be here.

Mp- Do you want to tell anything else?
Me- Would you like to see my file?
MP- NO No

Ok Thanks

A very friendly interview of around 30 mins (they were normally taking interviews of around 15-20 mins, mine was longer). What to expect..UI did some gramitical mistakes while taking in interview...i am not sure, please comment.

Re: [2008] IIM Bangalore GD/PI Experiences - 04-04-2008, 03:01 PM

Had my interview on 2nd april

Date: 2nd April - 2 PM
Center: IIMB

Profile:
Xth: 91 (TN Board)
XIIth: 92 (TN Board)
Grad: 8.85/10.0 CEG, Anna University
work ex: 20 months in Business Analyitcs

CAT: 99.46, BLICK

GD: 9 Members (All Present)
An IT Company CEO soon going to become the president of NASSCOM. In his company an Female Employee was raped and murdered by a taxicab driver. He is facing charges for being her employer and not able to give security. Should he accept guilt or not?

Discussion started off well.. We were all discussing when suddenly there was a little fish market kind of scene. One of the guys and one gal were trying to be very loud. Towards the end it calmed down and we added lot of new points. I tried to be good but since the overall quality of group wasnt gr8 cant say much.

PI-
Panel consisted of 2 profs P1,P2 and me-Mac.
I was second to be interviewed

P1 came out and shook hands and asked me to come in.
I went in and wished good afternoon to other prof also

P1: So, what do you think about the GD?
Mac: It was overall well. We discussed a lot. But could have made better use of the 20 minutes by analyzing more points. There was some cross talk which could have been avoided.
P2: Ok, so u seem to be doing well (looking at my papers). Tell me smthg what you do at work.
Mac: Told about business analytics.. (Cud have told more)
P1: Tell me smthg interesting in work u did recently?
Mac: Some story
P2: What and all subjects did u like in ur college?
Mac: databases, data warehousing.
Some discussion on why I liked those and why not other subjects.
P2: Ok, u use internet. What is the greatest problem with internet?
Mac: Security and gave an explanation.
Then all the discussion was on good or bad things of internet, my views on it. How internet is in rural sector.
How was giving good points but wasnt at my best.

After around 12 mins they said they are done and P2 asked if I have any questions.
Mac: It was a wonderful experience.. Murmured that I was waiting for years for this.
P1 and P2 smiled and said thanks.

That was it.. But I dont have the faintest idea what the outcome will be..

Cheers,
Mac

Re: [2008] IIM Bangalore GD/PI Experiences - 05-04-2008, 04:20 PM

My last GD/PI of the season

When - 1st April, 2 PM (Kya din choose kiya hai )
Where - Hospitality management Institute, Mumbai.
Why - CAT %ile - 99.89

Profile : B.E in IT from NIT, Durgapur. Currently working in software domain, Work-ex - 1.5 years.

A bit bizzare, I reached the centre at 11 AM. The morning panels were running late. I was put in panel 3, which hadn't completed their morning batch interviews till 2 PM

At 3:30 our GD started, thats already a long wait for me

9 persons in the group.

GD Topic :
It was about Women, how they are matching men in almost every sphere, but yet they ask for special priveleges, like can't work late hours, maternity leave, personal commitments at home ,etc, etc.
Are they justified in asking for special priveleges ?

Decent discussion, I don't think it continued for 15 minutes as asked for, but was for around 12-13 minutes, then we were stopped.

I came in 4-5 times, tried to give a proper direction to the GD, most of the times we discussing on women and their empowerment rather then discussing the key issue in the GD, are they justified ? I tried to bring in that perspective everytime I came in the GD. And for once, I was satisfied with my GD
:satisfie:

I was the last in the group (I wonder why, mostly I have been last or 2nd last in IIM interviews , happened to me on 5 out of 6 GD/PIs  ).

My turn came at 7:30 PM , I was feeling weird by then, was tired as well, just wanted the PI to finish.
The earlier interviews were for 20-25 minutes, but as time went by, the rest of the PIs were for 15 minutes only. Same with me, lasted for around 15 minutes.

PI : Two profs P1(female prof) and P2(male prof).

The entire interview was almost on work-ex.

P1 : Must be a long wait ?
M : Yeah, but getting used to it, happens with me everytime
P1 : But why, is it according to name, no its totally random.
M :

P2 : You work in XYZ, what does it do ?
M : bla bla

Next 5 minutes continued on my organization only, business aspects of it, the clients, the competitors, the revenues, etc.

P2 : Would u come back to ur organization after MBA ?
M : Haven't decided yet.
P1 : But why do s/w organizations need MBAs.
M : Competition, marketing their products, services, entering new markets, gave the exampe of Microsift and Google, and how important strategy is in these companies.

P1 : But google has mainly a search engine. Does it require marketing ?
M : A search engine may require marketing, but google believes in spreading awareness by word of mouth, no ads.
P1 : But how can a search engine be marketed ?
M : Giving ads in print and live media.
P1 : How google makes money ?
M : Through online advertizing, providing advertizing service to others as well.
P1 : Can a search engine operate w/o ads.
M : Yes it can, that how google infact started, no ads.
P1 : But then how will it make money ?
M : Not possible, thats why google later changed its strategy

After this another 5 minute round on my work-ex, which clients you have in India, and I said none, then why none, which clients in China, what else does your comapny do, etc, etc.

P2 :You haven't send us your degree and work-ex certis.
M : :( , ohhh, must have forgot
P2 : Plesae send it to us, by post.
M : Will do that.

Then was asked to leave, so finally everything is finished

Though from the experience, it looks a good PI, it wasn't so, I wasn't speaking very fluently, was half sleepy by 7:30
:sleepy: Had left Pune at 6 in the morning, and then to wait and wait and wait .

Anyways, still waiting for 11th April, just wishing it has surprises for me

VERDICT - Reject
