My IIM B interview on 1st April in IIM B

GD
It was a case discussion on a Burger Company. The Burger company claims that it makes healthy burgers, which are different from their competitors. The company has captured a large chunk of the market. The Burger company CEO used to appear in ad campaigns and used to swear by the Burgers. The CEO suffers a heart attack and dies. He had actually led a stressful lifestyle coupled with booze, fag, etc etc. Now the Brother of the deceased CEO wants the Short term, Medium Term and Long Term Strategy to do damage control.

Re: [2008] IIM Bangalore GD/PI Experiences - 03-04-2008, 11:45 AM

IIM - B the last GDPI for the season..! 2nd April 2:00PM Mumbai

Profile :
Xth - 86
XIIth - 90
Grad - MSc.(Hons) Mathematics from BITS-Pilani with CGPA 8.73/10
Workex - 22 months with a US based Hedge Fund back and middle office provider

CASE Study:

The Case was about a nephew of the boss of the company who was recruited on his father's recco..! He failed pretty bad in his first year. Then he turned to religion and his performance was improved since then.. He has now started preaching other ppl in the office about the advantages of prayer.. the employees are not comfertable with this intrusion in their private space.. ! What shud the boss do..?

GD went really well..! Everyone spoke.. and surprisingly we concluded it before the panel asked us to stop.... came in 3-4 times .. gave points abt "how office can ask him to arrange some sessions abt this outside work and the ppl interested mite attend" and "the boss shud take care that he is not enforcing something like religion conversion and all "..!

Interview:

The panel was really cool and softspoken
Asked mainly on workex. I can recollect only the following questions:
P1: So what questions shud we ask u?
Me: Ask me the questions I know the answers of
Everyone started laughing..!
P1: Ok so tell me what you do at Work.
Me: Explained about it.. that we calculate the Market Risk of the client’s portfolio.
P1: So what is this Risk? We do not know much ! Can you explain?
Me: Explained them about VaR (Value at Risk) etc. about how we use the Historical scenarios to calculate it.
P2: So what about Subprime crisis.. why did we not prepare for it?
Me: Explained that subprime is a new kind of event.. never occurred in the past so we have not data regarding it..! But yes if it happens again in the future.. like after 20 -30 years.. we will have the data regarding its impact..! Like we can predict what will happen to the client’s portfolio if 9-11 happens again.
They looked satisfied
P1: So what is the future in this business of hedge fund’s risk calculation business.. The markets are down so the future might be bleak?
Me: No sir.. infact this is a new opportunity for us..! Though the market turmoil has let lot of hedge funds to shut down…! But later it will ensure that lot of hedge funds will start taking the risk services…! So good business…!
Both of them started smiling..! Cant figure out why..??
P1: And the back office business. We have so many of them here?
Me: Sir till India is having the knowledge base.. the business will flourish..! Its mainly dependent on the learned ppl and we have lot many of them.. Its not infrastructure dependent like Manufacturing… in which we are witnessing a slow down..!
P1 looks satisfied.
P2: So ur father is in business. Why not u join him.?
Me: Mam, we have a joint family.. so there are lot of ppl in business right now…! So my father gave me the opportunity to do something myself..! and I am here…! :xmas:
P2: Ok.. just the last ques…! Why everyone is interested in Finance these days.. Asked this to all the previous interviewees also..! Can u explain?
Me: There is so much happening in the industry..! The Stocks Markets are going up and down..! new funds .. iBanks are coming up..! Even the recent turmoil has created so much news..! So everyone wants to be a part of this…! To know actually what happens inside..! They want to be part of this rather than being a spectator..!

P1: Nice talking 2 u… ne questions for us..!
Me: No sir…! Thanks…!
P2: Thank you..! and have a nice day..!
Me: u to.. thanks..!

ne comments on how it went?

Interview Center: IHC Delhi
Xth - 91.8, CBSE

Act 1
Actors
Panel - 7 ppl, 2 (or 3?) absent
Two Profs - Middle Aged (MP) and Young Prof (YP)

GD topic - Stray dogs causing a nuisance in a locality. One child has been killed recently. The Local Municipal Corp (LMC) is under pressure to act. It has started killing stray dogs indiscriminately, which has angered animal rights activists. What action should the commisioner take?

And this is not an All fool's day joke! sad topic, with an even worse GD. hardly any points to talk about. Everyone was practically repeating points after 10 mins. Then of course the mad dash with the summary and regular questions.
My participation: Pretty poor I should say, entered about 3 times, though could sustain for only about a minute and a half in total i think. But, a decent job with the summary and questions.

End of Act 1

Act 2
Actors
Same Profs & Moi

YP - Have a seat. How do you think the GD was?
Moi- My participation was not upto the mark
YP- And the overall GD
Moi- It was Ok. Not too good
YP - What did you think of the topic? Honestly
Moi - It was not interesting
<Chuckles>

OP - Tell me sumthin about yourself
Moi - Blah Blah.... cut short
OP - No go back in time
Moi - Like childhood?
OP - From schooling
Moi - blah blah. Father in Army, so a couple of questions on that. Blah Blah
...
OP - Go On
Moi - (what more!) Blah Blah, strengths etc.
OP - (Aha!) Give an instance
Moi - Blah Blah
OP - Question on classical music (hobby)
Moi - Blah
YP - Why MBA?
Moi - (Again?! Dont they get tired?) Blah Blah
YP - Doesnt that already exist?
Moi - Nono, what exists is <this>, what I want to do is <this>
YP - Not a feasible plan.
Moi - Lemme try it. C'mon I'm just starting my career
OP - Fair enuf
YP - CGPA is 10, you should do MS.
Moi - The same plan
<chuckles again>

<trouble ahead>
YP - (saw a few certis for social service) What did you do?
Moi - collected money
YP - Is that all? C'mon man, this is fraud.
Moi - Atleast I did do sumthing
<chuckles>
YP - Some questions on a project I did and how it would benefit people.
Moi - Some gyan again

YP - Do u know about the subprime crisis
Moi - Lil bit. Some Gyan
YP - Heard of Bear Stearns?
Moi - Said about the JP Morgan Chase buyout, $2 to $10 per share.... Thats all i know
YP - Indian economy?
Moi - Inflation... stock mkt (cut short)
OP - Invest in the stock market?
Moi - Just started a bit. Got into DLF after reading a strategy
OP - What did u buy it at?
Moi - Rs ABC
OP - Sold it off?
Moi - Nono, I'm holding on to it
<Lil impressed>

YP - Ok, u may go now, it was fun talking to you.
Moi - Likewise
OP - any questions?
Moi - (blooper!!! got too frank i guess) How did I do
OP - Will tell that later, we have to consider other factors too
Moi - k then, g'bye sirs

End of Act 2

My analysis: I guess the interview was decent, though my performance in the GD disappointed me which might just work against me
.....
Puys what dya think?

Re: [2008] IIM Bangalore GD/PI Experiences - 03-04-2008, 05:28 PM

hey puys....
posting my IIMB experience here...

3rd April - 9 AM
Interview Center: IHC Delhi

Profile:
Xth: 80
XIIth: 76
Grad: B.Tech (ICT) from DAIICT, 65%
work ex: 6 months(Infosys)

CAT: 99.99 (99+ in all 3 sections)

GD case: let sleeping dogs lie...
wasnt a very good case to discuss, the main issue was that stray dogs were making life difficult for a locality, and the local municipal corporation had to get into action, so we were supposed to jot out an action plan kind of.

abt the performance, it was an average performance for the whole group and for me as well, everyone got enough time to speak as there were 20 mins and only 7 participants, so not much of a hodge podge...but overall, wasnt a very 'kool' discussion with a boring topic...anyhow managed to pass time somehow

PI:
was the last one to be interviewed...and it went hay wire!!!
all the questions were GK based, except for a few on databases (related to my project) and why low acads...though in the databases part they were asking specific terms which i was not able to recollect, although was able to define any term that was put across...so it was an average performance...
but in the rest of the interview, which was all about GK, i totally messed up...cudnt put in the right words, the right incidences, and couldnt really get to the point where the interviewers were trying to take me to...so all in all i guess it was a poor performance on my part, esp since i guess i lost the steam after IIMC interview as it is...and wasnt in the best frame of mind to give this interivew...the break did me in!!! also, i think wasnt expecting anything on GK...going by the trend as read on PG!!!

anywayz, the major topics touched in GK..
Dhirubhai Ambani (i was asked to talk about him, when i was expecting a question to tell something abt myself!!!!!!!)
migration to big cities, various related issues (this part i handled not so badly, except i couldnt remember textile mills being shut down in ahmedabad)
something about social activists
recent news that u have been following (couldnt remember any, was already feeling drenched by the time this question came up )
magsaysay award (i totally blew up this one!!!)

interview went on for around 15 minutes....they were pretty punctual about it, everyone in my panel took 15 mins only...except for the person just before me, who took more than 20 mins...

will put in something more if i remember...

wasnt a good interview for me at all....but had a decent GD...cant make much out of it....anywayz, will be able to see the results pretty soon....

wish everyone all the best...

Re: [2008] IIM Bangalore GD/PI Experiences - 03-04-2008, 06:40 PM

finally the b gdpi ... the last of the season (& hopefully for some time to come) .... here goes my experience

2nd april @2pm @hotel kenilworth, kolkata

my profile:
QA - 99.13
DI - 96.75
VA - 99.61
overall - 99.82
calls - blacki

class X - 90.4% (cbse)
class XII - 92.8% (cbse)
currently in final yr, btech (chemical engg), iit kharagpur; cgpa 8.32

GD
1st panel, 1st member
no of ppl in grp - 8
10 min to think (seemed like an eternity, 15 min to discuss (an even bigger eternity), 10 min to write (noooo time whatsoever; barely managed to finish the summary and the other 2 Q's)
topic:

The Preaching Employee

Ajay runs a software company that is involved in security systems. A year ago, on the recommendation of his brother, he hired his nephew, Anthony, to work for him. Anthony used to be a wayward person until a little more than a year ago. He used to sit around at home, watching TV and living off his parents (arent most of us doing the same thing??). But due to certain incidents that happened about a year back, he turneed to religion. After that, his attitude towards life changed and he decided to clean up his act. He then started to work for his uncle. During the time that he was with his uncle's company, he proved to be an exceptionally hard worker. Everyone was pleased with his dedication.

But, there has been a cause for concern as well. Anthony has taken upon himself to preaching to others, trying to convince them of the advantages of prayer. Unfortunately, this has not gone down too well with most of his colleagues. They have begn to resent his intrusion into what they consider their private space. Some of them have even complained to the management regarding Anthony's behaviour.

What should Ajay do about Anthony?

the discussion was quite peacful ... there werent too many points to discuss, and practically all aspects were covered. I had an average gd; came in thrice, with 1-2 points & supporting statements. didnt have much airtime though :( the group ended up repeating the points towards the end. i could have and should have had a better gd.

PI

was the 1st person to be interviewed. PI lasted for ~25 min (thats wat the ppl outside told me)

p1: 1st prof (to my left)
p2: 2nd prof (to my right)
m: me

(note - no one checked the originals in my case, but the panelists had photocopies of all the documents)

p1: so ... ur industrial training is on Curing of pasted battery plates (i had done my 3rd yr industrial training at exide industries limited, shamnagar). So tell me what is Curing?
m: started explaining ...
p1: (interrupting) no tell me, what is Curing in general?
m: ??????
p1: what in general do u mean by curing?
m: (finally reembering the dictionary definition) blah blah
p1: now explain what exactly did u do in the project?
m: blah blah blah (spoke for nearly 2 min uninterrupted)
p1: u compared the theoretical values with practical values. what are these?
m: explained what i meant by theoretical & practical values, used to find efficiency of the process. also gave a numerical example taking arbit values
p1: was your model theoretically correct?
m: (???) ya, all equations are theoretically given in international journals blah blah blah
p2: so can u tell me any recent technological innovations in battery technology?
m: (uh oh) mentioned about the use of polypropylene cases, recycling of old batteries (couldnt think of anything else)
p2: what other types of batteries do u know of?
m: Ni-Cd, Hg etc etc
p2: so what are these batteries used for? y cant we use them for the same use as lead acid batteries?
m: talked about low potential
p2: (interrupting) low? even lead acid batteries produce only 12V
m: said that its relative ... others produce far lower voltages which are used in devices like watches (Hg battery) or the pencil batteries used in digicams and various other devices (Ni-Cd etc). whereas lead acid batteries used in automobiles, inverters etc (forgot to mention that these can give high currents as well which the others can't)
p1: so what alternative battery sources can be used in cars for running them fully without using petrol/diesel?
m: (???) talked about solar panels ...
p1: there are cars running fully on battery power right?
m: yes
p1: what type of battery is used in them?
m: (mar gaye) i dont know sir
p1: u dont know? u worked in a battery company ... they must have told u about the threats posed by these cars?
m: no sir ( y on earth will they tell me??)
p1: recently in kolkata itself some people have made a car which can run fully on battery... u must have heard about it. they want to market this as a rival to nano. what type of battery does it use?
m: (???? ye kab hua????) sir i dont know, but i can take a guess ... possibly some similar sort of battery as lead acid batteries (a veery wild guess)
p1: come on .... those people must have told you something about that ...
m: (totally clueless) i dont know sir (can we get out of batteries??)
p2: (checking my form, and seeing the date of training, and then telling p1) ok he did his training in may-june, in that time this news hadnt come out
p1: ok ... then u may not have heard about it
m: (??? when was such a car made??? no more battery questions please)
p1: so u r from chemical engineering ... tell me the products obtained from a crude distillation unit.
m: (finally)blah blah
p1: so which is more expensive .. diesel or petrol?
m: diesel (am quite sure about this)
p1: but in the market isnt petrol more expensive?
m: explained about govt determined price ... diesel being used by poor in tractors, diesed pump sets, generators, so with an eye on votebank, price is deliberately kept low
p2: so who is the votebank?
m: ????
p2: i mean who is the votebank? the poor who use diesel or the middle class who use petrol?
m: (ye kya hai??) both (gr8 ans)
p1: so why is diesel more expensive?
m: mentioned about greater treatment to remove sulphur; more sulphur in heavier components etc etc .. not very sure of this though but it is a fact that diesel is more expensive
p1: desulphurisation is done before refining and not after
m: no sir it is done after refining
p1: no. crude from bombay high is 1st desulphurised at hazira then sent for refining.
m: (almost smiling ... ye to obvious psyching strategy hai) no sir it is done afterwards ... each component has diff sulphur contents and diff regulatory requirements and hence it is done afterwards; moreover if it was done before refining, the size of the desulphurisation unit would be immense and impractical
p1: (satisfied ... hopefully) so u were telling me about govt regulation of prices. so in an unregulated market, would diesel be more expensive?
m: yes
p1: sure?
m: yes
p2: under all circumstances?
m: (finally understanding the question) only if demand of both products are equal (actually i wanted to say that demand and supply were equal, but somehow didnt get my words right)
p1: whr is diesel used?
m: blah blah
p2: and petrol?
m: balh blah
p2: so the market price will be higher, what about cost of production?
m: ???
p2: (repeats Q)
m: explained diff between market price and cost of production
p1: so dont u think that with petrol cheaper, and more cars on the road, petrol will ultimately become more expensive?
m: blah blah (possibly, but diesel is used in buses, trucks, heavy transport, tractors etc etc. also, iocl plans to import diesel this yr to meet domestic requirements)
p1: ok .... so u have written adolf hitler as the most influential person of the 20th century. (reading out loud) blah blah blah ..... whew you have attributed a lot to hitler. how do u think he was responsible?
m: (yeahhhhh ... he can read my handwriting ) briefly described whatever points i had written in there ... there were quite a few
p1: so how do u think hitler was responsible for the israel palestine conflict ... indirectly as u say?
m: blah blah (spoke for quite some time about the reasons for the creation of israel)
p1: but i heard that most of the jews settling in israel were from russia ..
m: blah blah
p1: so is israel's population still growing?
m: yes ... as birth rate is higher than death rate (gr8 ans) .. not sure of emigration values although immigration is probably higher
p1: ok that will be all ... send the next person in
m: thank you sir

my take: GD was average, and i dont expect much from there, sumary was decent. about PI ... i dont really know .... while i answered acads & hitler questions quite well, the battery portion wasnt that good, as i couldnt answer some of the questions. still ... hoping for the best .... waiting for the 11th .... puys and seniors please respond about my chances.

@DavidHyter - talk about good imagination coupled with a great sense of humour!

@Prashanth_iitiit and the others who don't get it - just think of it this way... Under the influence of gravity, we feel the force (= mg) acting downwards but the helium balloon goes up. When the car accelerates forward, we feel the 'force' (= ma) backwards and the balloon moves forward!

Re: [2008] IIM Bangalore GD/PI Experiences - 03-04-2008, 07:18 PM

Hi all

here is my experience

Venue: IIM B, 2 PM
2007 pass out, mech engg
9 months work ex

GD: It was abt Jodha akhbar movie controversy. Lots of facts were present in the case itself. We were to give advice to the chief minister whether he should ban the movie in the state..

I think GD was ok..to me it was an open and shut case..obviously the movie should not be banned. director never claimed tht it is factually right movie, moreover he had consulted the historians. The protesting organizations did not really have a case. The group also was unanimous in the decision.

My performance: Average

Summary and 2 questions: Here was a twist..we were told tht we will be given 15 mins and so i guess i took it lightly..they took our sheets after 10 mins....had started with the 2 questions and in the end could not finish the summary. Also i felt i took too many lines to summarize the case and hence could not write much on the actual discussion tht took place.

My Performance: Average

PI

was 4th in the panel...had got the feedback tht PI is going very chill..only general stuff..still was a bit nervous..here is how it went (summary)..it was very profile based so no point writing the detailed thing

I was asked about my company...the projects I work on and my learnings...then onto my hobbies..cricket in my case...then my life at IIT D....we ended up discussing the issue of ragging and my first year ragging experiences

Overall it was feel good interview

My performance: good

GD/PI season over for me...lets see what the final verdict is

Verdict: Rejected

Re: [2008] IIM Bangalore GD/PI Experiences - 03-04-2008, 08:56 PM

Here's my IIMB experience

Date: 3rd April - 2 PM
Center: HMATC, Mumbai

Profile:
Xth: 90.83%
XIIth: 96.60%
Grad: 7.46/10.0 BITS Pilani
work ex: 32 months(Marketing in L&T)

CAT: 99.95, BLACKI

GD: 9 Members (All Present)
An IT Company CEO soon going to become the president of NASSCOM. In his company an Female Employee was raped and murdered by a taxicab driver. He is facing charges for being her employer and not able to give security. Should he accept guilt or not?

Third time I am getting this kind of case ( I, C, B) anyway the discussion was fairly organized. May be because of the time available (20 min) everyone could talk properly and we could summarize well in time. After the GD we were asked to summarize and finish the 2 Questions in 10 min. They stopped us in 5 min but I reminded them that we still have time

A satisfactory case for me. I could make at least 5-6 decent entries and gave original points.

PI:
6th to be interview. Had to wait for a long time.

Panel consisted of 2 profs (one of them a lady)

LP: So what were they discussing outside?
Me: That the interview was very relaxed. (same q in C GDPI )

LP: Do you want a change from that?
Me: (Smiling) You are the interviewer, its up to you Ma'am.

LP: Anyway, what exactly do you do at L&T?
Me: Explained them from the day I joined till today. (Just what I wanted them to ask me)

MP: (Impressed) So how are you placed in your organization?
Me: explained how I was a top performer and all.

LP: Did you have any offers from other companies before L&T?
Me: Explained them the uniqueness of my job

MP: Why do you want to leave this and study now? (Same Q in C)
Me: Explained how I needed to learn more

The interview went on for a while on the company.

MP: If you are leaving and asked to give the feedback about your company what would you say?
Me: Gave him a few positives and negatives. Seemed to be OK with it.

After a few more minutes discussing on this, he finally said if I had any questions
I should have said no. Instead I said I forgot
Except this minor glitch, the interview was great. It lasted about 20-25min. Left the room with a great feeling.

Finally done with the interviews.
I hope I will do again on Next Friday the 11th the D-Day... Hoping for a BLACKI again

ALL THE BEST to you guys
