Re: Great Lakes Batch 2009 -

Hi newbie,
About great lakes, I think that ofcourse the seniors can give you a better picture.
Regarding HKU kindly consider the following points:
In Education Experience, HKU is ranked 2nd worldwide, ahead of many premier B Schools like Harvard, Kellogs etc by the 2007 MBA ranking of Economist (EIU), one of the most respectable and trusted MBA Rankings world wide. Overall in the ranking the school got 37th position worldwide while IIM Ahd got 93rd position...
Rest, it is the only Asian programme in the world to come in the top 50 positions of an MBA Ranking (MBA Ranking of the Economist) consistently for 3 years...
The education exp is given such a high rank because :
1. HKU is one of the very few B Schools in the world to have a partnership with London Business School (LBS) and Columbia Business School (CBS) for a ‘compulsory’ exchange programme in which the students of HKU spend full one semester with the MBA/EMBA students of LBS/CBS as a part of their curriculum. This provides the students with strong networking opportunities… Students who go to LBS are provided with the alumni status of the London Business School (excluding the placement services through LBS). Students who go to CBS are provided mostly all the services that are provided to the normal MBA/EMBA students of the B School…
2. Programme structure in which students spend 9 months in Hong Kong (one of the top 3 financial hubs worldwide), 3 to 4 months either in London or New York (proper Manhattan) and then 2 months in Shanghai hence, providing opportunity of great international exposure…
3. Good Faculty… Ranked 16th by the Economist 2007 MBA Ranking Worldwide…
4. Good exposure of China, one of the biggest economic giants…
5. A good mix of international students… The current batch has students from as much as 11 nationalities…
6. Average student work exp is 6 years… This contributes well towards a mature class room discussion and understanding…
7. The MBA programme is in one of the oldest and the most respected Universities in Hong Kong and the Asia region: ‘The University of Hong Kong’ in short ‘HKU’ which is ranked 18th worldwide by the THES-QS World University Rankings 2007… In other University rankings, HKU is always ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide…
8. Small batch size of 40 people, which leads to a greater students and faculty interactions…
9. Strong research centres focusing on Asian case studies and knowledge…
10. Being located in the main campus of HKU, the students get full excess to all the facilities of the University Campus ranging from Main Library, University Seminars f even different departments, University Festivals, Computer Facilities, Recreation Centres like Restaurants, Sports Complex etc….
11. Last but not the least; the way the reputation of HKU is raising, it is highly commendable… Even if it is a very young programme, of just ~ 6 years, it has attained a very respectable position at international level…
This was all about the brighter side of the programme…
Now, regarding the other side:
1. Now, about the most important part i.e. placements: One can’t expect as much luxury and benefits that one receives in premier Indian B Schools where on campus placements come as a major relief for the students. Like in most of the B Schools abroad, in HKU also mostly students have to go for off campus placements. Also, one should have good skills in Mandarin (Chinese) if he/she wants to have a good job in Hong Kong especially in marketing…
But, initially the number of placement councilors in HKU was just 2 but from this year their no is increased to 5 which come as a major relief during placements.
2. The ROI (Return on Investment) takes some time ~2-3 years depending on the type of job a person gets as compared to the ROI from a premier Indian B School which takes ~ 1-2 year. This is because the total expenditure of HKU MBA is ~ Rs 22 Lacs (including everything from fees, food, accomodation, travelling etc) as compared to an Indian B School which has ~ 7 Lacs… But, as the HKU MBA programme is of just 14 months as compared to a 21 or 22 months conventional MBA programme of an Indian B School, a person is able to cover the ROI much earlier then expected…
Rest, if any one has any further doubts about the programme then kindly write them on the ‘HKU MBA Admission’ thread…
Please Note: In the MBA rankings of Financial Times and Business Week, HKU is never rated because to become eligible in the MBA ranking of Financial Times and Business Week, a B School must be at least 6 years old and HKU being a very young programme will become 6 years old in this year only.

Hi Anupam
Congrats for the calls !! Good job.
Well all the best for the decision u have made. I just had some inputs (to help u make informed decision and reasonable expectations..)
A f riend of mine(good guy, good acads, iit kgp btech ) has done from hku and seems to be not happy making the decision. He graduated last year (2007) and still searching...(there is more to it though so dont get scared..).
It would be his case in particular may be... I dont know about your background. But it seems finance background guys with finance major manage to get something in hong kong or nearby areas. That guy is from IT and wants to move to strategy consulting and is particulat about that so that could be one of the reasons. There's not much indian alumni network it seems.Back home in India he is finding it tough for two reasons. 1. Lack of recognition of the school here. 2. Unfortunate timing(slowdown and stuff).
Anyways hope things would turn for the better next year.
All the best !!

Re: Great Lakes Batch 2009 -

well thanks oneyearmba...
the problem your friend is facing is probably because he wants to switch over from one field to another i.e. from IT to strategy consultancy in this case...
Even in India, if a person tries to switch over from one field to another (especially after gaining a considerable amount of work exp in the previous field), he/she faces a lot of problem while doing so... During such a shift, a person has to decide between job profile, company and pay package... Initially in such a scenario, a person is unable to secure a job which provide him good prospectives in all the three mentiones parameters...
So, the field shift may be the most probable reason due to which your friend is unable to secure a job...
Rest, what is the name of your friend... I know most of the Indian students in the 2007 HKU batch and may be I know him personally...
Rest, let us discuss more over HKU in the ‘HKU MBA Admission’ thread…

Thanks so much unkindmonk, u surely are very kind
My laptop is 1.73GHz and 1Gig RAM. The college is offering 2GHz and 2Gigs RAM. This is the only major difference I notice. Other than this there differences like screen size, webcam etc. which I think are pretty trivial.
Also would you be kind enough to tell me about the accommodation scene around the insti. How easy is it to acquire a decent flat in the area? I am planning to come a day or two before the course starts to look for flats. What about those scary tales of water scarcity in chennai?
Thanks again,
PR

Hi all,
There are too many threads floating and its really tough fr us seniors to visit each thread to answer everyones query. So here is the deal.........
All admission related queries .......stuff like dates to deposit money , laptop issues etc need to be posted at the admission thread which is as follows
http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/cat-an...008-a-195.html (Great Lakes Admissions 2008)
All stuff regarding accommodation, life etc need to be posted below
http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/b-scho...t-mgmt-84.html
This particular thread can be used by u puys to network among urself, however fr queries post in the above mentioned threads only ......
Hope the matter is clear
Cheers......
