Re: [2008] IIMA PI Experiences - 18-03-2008, 05:13 PM

Hi,

I just registered today and thought i would post my interview experience just for the sake of it. It was on the 16th of Feb @ Ahmedabad - KLMDC Annexe

10th - ICSE - 91.67
12th - ICSE - 90.00
Grad - 4th year - IIT - 6.:P

CAT-99.95 (1st time - no work ex)
Quant - 99.13
DI - 99.55
Verbal - 99.66

Essay topic
Should cricket be made the national game of India ?

Interview - mine was the first interview

p1, p2, p3

p1: you are from metallurgy ?
me : yup
p1: what is martensite, austenite etc:
me : blah, blah..partially correct, mumbled something arbit for one part
p1: what is the use of phases
me : told. but in extremely abstract and layman terms
p1: what are properties of martensite
me : told, again layman language
p1: where is carbon in martensite
me : it was going into acads too much. so i mumbled out one line : " I dont know"

p2 : What is happening in pakistan
me : spoke for a minute on this, included assasination of BB, her will, elections and supposed rigging by musharraf : remember - this was before the elections.
p2 : why has pakistan always been an unstable democracy ?
me : islamic fundamentalism and us influence
p2 : is it because of the presence of muslims ?
me : not because of muslims but because of the fundamentalism of the clergy, saints and stuff like that
p2 : what about the us influence ?
me : us has given pakistan 68 billion dollars since pak's independence. When that kind of money flows into your politicial system, there is bound to be corruption. Govt wont care for people, tax collection etc etc and vice versa
p2 : is it because of the army interference ?
me : no, turkey has army rule. instead, kemal pasha managed to build up a secular country with no unstability
p2: dont deviate. get to the point. i agree with what you are saying.
me : (might have pushed my point a bit too much here) yes, sir. I do believe that it is because of the use of pakistan as a strategic ally by the us against russia and china.
p2 : ok

P3 : you play football ? (I have a gold medal in inter-iit football, not sure why this question !)
me : yes sir, as goalkeeper
p3: why is football not famous in india ?
me : because of the leverage that cricket gets
p3 : leaving that aside ??
me : people dont see a career in football. People like me, who would love to be playing football see themselves ending up with a local club and not moving further beyond. Also, people see their peers etc playing cricket all the time. (The next part is legendary :P:P ). A child growing up sees nothing but cricket, on TV, on his school grounds, everywhere
p3 : hmmm

p1 : can you name three goalkeepers who have been captains of their countries ? (in world cups) (im not sure abt the world cup part..he was speaking a bit low)
me : hmmm...oliver kahn of germany...hmmm...peter schmeichel of denmark...hmm....dino zoff of italy. ( each hmmm signifies around 5 seconds)
p1 : have you heard of "higuita" ?
me : yes sir, rene higuita was a colombian goalkeeper. I am not sure if he was captain or not. (I knew an interesting fact about higuita but did not mention it. now i guess i should have)

p3 : thank you : take A toffee
me : Thank you, sir (Took two toffees )) . Went halfway to the door, paused and said " Do i need to send someone in ?? "
P3 : no, we'll call. (In my lucknow interview, they had actually asked me to send someone in after 15 seconds.)

End

Dont know how it went, but the acads part was a bit shady.

Re: [2008] IIMA PI Experiences - 18-03-2008, 06:10 PM

finally the a pi ...... on 17 march @2pm @hotel kenilworth @kolkata

my profile:
QA - 99.13
DI - 96.75
VA - 99.61
overall - 99.82
calls - blacki

class X 90.4%
class XII 92.8%
currently in final yr btech (chemical engg), IIT-KGP cgpa 8.32
no work ex

PI grp:
8 ppl, 3 from kgp (including me )
overall 24 ppl in 3 grps, 7 guys from kgp (quite nice)

essay topic: JOB RESERVATIONS IN PRIVATE ORGANIZATIONS
obviously, there was a lot to write about, & every1 did that. 10 minutes for writing.
(note - the morning topic had been "coconuts: nature's packaging at its best")

PI: was 7th in my panel. had a looooooooooong wait. my pi actually started after the other groups had finished.i finally entered tht hallowed rm at 5 pm, after waiting for nearly 2.5 hrs. initially our panellists had been taking pi's for ~30 min, only the last 2 were of 20 min each. was perhaps over-relaxed, did not feel any tension before, during or after the pi.

P1 - Prof. Satish Y Deodhar (centre for management in agriculture)
P2 - Prof. T. Bandhopadhyay (P&QM)
P3 - 3rd prof
m - me

P1 in centre, p2 on his right, P3 on left. P3 came out to call me.

P1: have a seat
m: thank u sir
P1: (started reading from my curricular achievements) so u were the topper in west bengal in cbse in class 12
m: yes sir
P1: cbse gives out some merit certificates as well doesnt it?
m: yes sir, for the indivudual subjects
p1: ah yes u have those as well in class 12
m: yes sir
p1: (coming down to extraacads) so what is this business event "abc- all about business and chemicals"?
m: (abc - an event in "cheminsight" our inter clg fest organised by dept of chemical engg, iit kharagpur) explained everything in detail, appeared satisfied)
p1: ok .. so in your hobbies you have written watching formula 1. y is it called so?
m: blah blah
p1: what were the positions last year?
m: blah blah
p1: how about this year?
m: blah blah (told thm abt sunday's race, where it was held)
p3: so who won it?
m: blah blah
p1: so u like watching movies. what type of movoes?
m: english, mainly scifi
p1: very recently, there was a movie which had some indian connection or plot and had a futuristic theme. can you name the movie?
m: ??????? :O :O (ye kya hai bhai) i looked this way & that
p2: ok one clue, it had a name related to mathematics.
m: (still clueless) guessed pi, life of pi, matrix, but all were refuted. but p2 said "nice guess"
p1: ok forget that, tell me, which indian movies have been noiminated in recdent years?
m: blah blah (told eklavya, paheli, lagaan, water, with lagaan & water reaching the final 5)
p1: any othr movie to have reached the final round?
m: mother india (1957)
p1: hmm ok ... was water an indian movie?
m: (awwww ... now i remember that it was a canadian entry) said something about it having an indian starcast, indian story, indian diro etc etc, just shot in canada ...
p3: (interrupting) was the movie shot in canada?
m: (aww another error) hastily rephrased myself by saying that it was shot in srilanka, post production & everythng was done in canada
p3: so y wasnt the movie shot in india?
m: protests by some parties
p3: y were they protesting?
m: said to be against hindu culture, distorting india's image etc etc
p1: so what are the major movie awards in india?
m: filmfare, iifa, national awards, zee cine etc etc
p1: any major national award?
m: (got confused)

(p3 asks for dertificates at this point.. hand them over)

p1: named after a famous personality?
m: (finally i understand) dadasaheb phalke award
p1: its a pretty unusual name dont u think? who was he? a contemporary of dadabhai naoroji?
m: (arre ye kahan mar gaye) couldnt remember abt naoroji, so said somethng abt phalke working around the turn of the century

(p1 leaves briefly; p2 takes over)

p2: so what courses have you done in maths?
m: maths 1, 2, num sol to odepde, transform calculus
p2: have you done any course in numerical analysis?
m: (here i screwed up a bit. i had forgotten what numerical analysis was and said no. it was only later when he asked me about iteration that i remembered that numerical analysis means these things ) no sir
p2: how do u solve transcendental eqns?
m: by iteration
p2: when did u do that?
m: in maths 2
p2: so u know any iteration techniques?
m: newton raphson
p2: explain
m: wrote the formula and started explaining
p2: tell me physically what it represents
m: drew a graph, explained everythng nicely
p2: so can u derive the formula now?
m: couldnt do (its very simple, a 1-liner in fact, and damn, i couldnt do it thr)
p2: ok fine. now suppose there are 10 toffees in that bowl in front of u (the bowlful of toffees was there right under my nose). imagine there are 2 blue & 8 red toffees. what is the probbility that a blue toffee will be selected?
m: (after some thought) 1/5
p2: sure?
m: (some more thought) yes sir
p3: ok now imagine that before u, 10 people came in and took a toffee each. 8 people took blue & 2 took red, and after each person took a toffee, it was replaced by a toffee of the same colour. would you like to change your answer?
m: (the language wasnt very clear initially, so i asked twice for clarifications before i finally understood what they wanted. but i stuck to my answer) (in the meantime, p1 comes in & is handed the file of certificates by p3)
p2: what courses have u done in probability?
m: only the basic probability in class 11-12, i havnt done any courses in engineering (luckily )
p1: ok enough of maths, tell me ... something about chocolate
m: told about history of chocolate, that mayans and aztecs were the 1st to consume, and that its actually bitter, sugar has to be added to make it sweet (this was done by europeans) told about some aztec king who drank 50 cups of chocolate a day, how coffee beans were native to central america ...
p3: (interrupting) coffee beans?
m: oh sry , chocolate beans ...
p1: are they called chocolate beans?
m: (stuck in technicalities grrrr) they are called some beans but i cant remember the name
p1: u dont know their name?
m: cant remember
p1: names of any health drinks for children?
m: horlicks, bournvita etc etc
p1: isnt there something produced from cocoa extracts as well?
m: (andhere mein ujala) sir they are called cocoa beans (how did i forget this?)
p1: so how did chocolate get to india?
m: spanish brought it to europe, then british to india
p1: ok fine that will be all. take a toffee.
m: thank u sir (took a blue one )

my take - essay writing was decent. this was the most relaxed pi which i have given, and possibly the first which i actually enjoyed. did not feel even an iota of stress. though should have done my maths better.

ab lets see wat happens on april 11.... puys please respond on my chances of conversion of a.

@raunakmetal

I think the movie is matrix reloaded ... it's about the small girl in the end named sita or something .... and she gave out some fundaes which match with some indian philosophy

only that it is probably not very recent

The movie is Matrix Revolutions - the last part of the Trilogy. The girls name is Sati, and her parents are Ramakant (Ramakandra) and Kamala.

Re: [2008] IIMA PI Experiences - 19-03-2008, 10:53 PM

Hi everyone
My two pence on my IIM A interview.
Time :2.00
Date: 17th march
Venue: Hotel Kenilworth, Kolkata

My profile:
10th- 80.83% (assam board)
12th- 88.80% -cbse
grad- 8.58/10.00
In my final yr, CSE engg.

CAT07: 99.70%tile, BLACKI

My panel was the same as that of raunakmetal, in fact my PI was just after him.I was the last person to be interviewed that day and my PI began at 5.30
The essay topic was same and I wrote pretty decently on it.

Now the nightmare begins.
4 profs were there, the panel specially expanded for me since the other panels that day had dispersed into mine.
I entered the room wished them all good evening and sat down on the chair as directed.
initially they checked my form...
P1: What was this (pointing to a paper I presented at a Linux symposium)
me: explained the event
p2: you have copy of the paper now?
me: took it out and showed him.
p1: You have written that you sing.... what kind of music?
me: explained...
p1: ... and you also write.... you have any samples?
me: showed him my college newsletter.. also explaining that I had also been in the editorial team.
p3: You write in english?
me: yes
p1: So many quizzes..... national level .... ur a quizzer eh?
me: yessir
(till here I was hitting sixers
p2: there is a musician who won a grammy usinga modified guitar....
me; ???
p2: he is an iNDIAN....
me: <gotcha clue!> Pandit Vishva Mohan Bhatt
p2: ok what are the modifications?
me: its closer to the Spanish guitar rather than Hawaiian... it uses bars not fingers to press the frets...
p3: Spanish or Hawaian?
me: <confused!> The one with the bars sir, Hawaiian is played direct.
p2: Okk fine...... Name some regional parties.
me: TMC, AGP, RJD, DMK....
p2: what is rjd?
me: told
p1: who founded janata dal?
me: JP narayan
p2: which narayan????
me: Jaiprakash
p1: he formed Janata Party
me: <ooops! embarassed> yessir, Janata Dal is what now remains of the erstwhile Janata Party...
p1: ok who was JP narayan?
me: told....
p1: when was the emergency declared?
me:(walking on thin ice) between 1971 and 1975... I don't remember the exact year.... (at least i was sorta correct here)
p1: ok... One of the founders was a PM
me: sir am not sure.... HD Deve Gowda maybe... (tricky tricky...)
p1: fine name some non-congress PMs?
me: AB Vajpayee, deve gowda, Charan Singh, Morarji Desai
p1: and....?
me: cant recall anymore....
(only IK Gujral is left out here.... he didn't ask me to name all, just some... still he applies pressure )
p2: Name some CMs of Southern states. (I am from the NE states)
me: Jayalaitha, Naidu.....
p1: I mean present...
me: oh... Achutanandan from kerela, Karunanidhi from TN... (abt to say rakashekhara reddy when he cuts me of)
p1: What is DMK?
me: Dravida Munnutera Khazagam
p1: who founded it?
me: confused and stressed.... MG Ramachandran ( its actly Annadurai)
p1: ????
me: still confused... explaining abt how aiadmk and dmk came after a factional break...
p2: tell me why DMK was formed.
me: Regionalism.... perceived regional suppression (I was such a fool, didn't mention the key words: language movement)
p1: what regionalism??? (irritated...)
p3: okk, I will ask you some simple mathematics.
what is a prime number?
me: told
p3: what is the largest one u can think of?
me: 193
p2: r u sure its prime? how do u know
me: can work it out... also remember reading it sumwhr
p3: fine, is there any formula for prime numbers?
me: all prime nos r of the form 6n+1 or 6n-1
p2: he means a formula that will give prime nos for all n.
me: I dunno sir....
p3: think abt it...
me: <after a pause> dunno sir (there is one.... i wikied it now, too late)
p3: fine, a computer scientist made this algo to find prime nos.... u know his name?
me: nope
p3: ok prove that there are infinite no of prime nos.
me: some bull abt infinite natural nos... if we have a formula for generating primes which u mentioned then for infinite n there can be infinite primes.
<more questions on these lines were asked....>

Finally p3 drew a graph and asked me to tell which function it was...
I cudnt...
they kept on askin me to try
I said " it cant be log this... sin or cos"
p2: what abt Fourier series?
me: that way sir every function can be expressed as sin and cos... even this..
p1: okk Chandrima take a toffee....
me: thank you sir...
Thank yous all around...
I exit in ignonimity.

Tell me what you think.... I expect many consolations for this horrible PI.

If this deserves consolation, then I don't know what my PI deserves..

Seriously buddy, I didn't see much wrong here. No one could answer all questions in IIMA PIs, not possible at all. You answered quite a few things which are good enough to clinch the deal. Add your profile to the mixture, and you are a real favourite to spend your next two years in Vastrapur.. ATB.

Anirban

P.S: I am still recovering from the shock of my PI. Yet to gather enough strength to write the exp..:snipersm:
