)
overall 24 ppl in 3 grps, 7 guys from kgp (quite nice)
essay topic: JOB RESERVATIONS IN PRIVATE ORGANIZATIONS
obviously, there was a lot to write about, & every1 did that. 10 minutes for writing.
(note - the morning topic had been "coconuts: nature's packaging at its best")
PI: was 7th in my panel. had a looooooooooong wait. my pi actually started after the other groups had finished.i finally entered tht hallowed rm at 5 pm, after waiting for nearly 2.5 hrs. initially our panellists had been taking pi's for ~30 min, only the last 2 were of 20 min each. was perhaps over-relaxed, did not feel any tension before, during or after the pi.
P1 - Prof. Satish Y Deodhar (centre for management in agriculture)
P2 - Prof. T. Bandhopadhyay (P&QM)
P3 - 3rd prof
m - me
P1 in centre, p2 on his right, P3 on left. P3 came out to call me.
P1: have a seat
m: thank u sir
P1: (started reading from my curricular achievements) so u were the topper in west bengal in cbse in class 12
m: yes sir
P1: cbse gives out some merit certificates as well doesnt it?
m: yes sir, for the indivudual subjects
p1: ah yes u have those as well in class 12
m: yes sir
p1: (coming down to extraacads) so what is this business event "abc- all about business and chemicals"?
m: (abc - an event in "cheminsight" our inter clg fest organised by dept of chemical engg, iit kharagpur) explained everything in detail, appeared satisfied)
p1: ok .. so in your hobbies you have written watching formula 1. y is it called so?
m: blah blah
p1: what were the positions last year?
m: blah blah
p1: how about this year?
m: blah blah (told thm abt sunday's race, where it was held)
p3: so who won it?
m: blah blah
p1: so u like watching movies. what type of movoes?
m: english, mainly scifi
p1: very recently, there was a movie which had some indian connection or plot and had a futuristic theme. can you name the movie?
m: ??????? :O :O (ye kya hai bhai) i looked this way & that
p2: ok one clue, it had a name related to mathematics.
m: (still clueless) guessed pi, life of pi, matrix, but all were refuted. but p2 said "nice guess"
p1: ok forget that, tell me, which indian movies have been noiminated in recdent years?
m: blah blah (told eklavya, paheli, lagaan, water, with lagaan & water reaching the final 5)
p1: any othr movie to have reached the final round?
m: mother india (1957)
p1: hmm ok ... was water an indian movie?
m: (awwww ... now i remember that it was a canadian entry) said something about it having an indian starcast, indian story, indian diro etc etc, just shot in canada ...
p3: (interrupting) was the movie shot in canada?
m: (aww another error) hastily rephrased myself by saying that it was shot in srilanka, post production & everythng was done in canada
p3: so y wasnt the movie shot in india?
m: protests by some parties
p3: y were they protesting?
m: said to be against hindu culture, distorting india's image etc etc
p1: so what are the major movie awards in india?
m: filmfare, iifa, national awards, zee cine etc etc
p1: any major national award?
m: (got confused)
(p3 asks for dertificates at this point.. hand them over)
p1: named after a famous personality?
m: (finally i understand) dadasaheb phalke award
p1: its a pretty unusual name dont u think? who was he? a contemporary of dadabhai naoroji?
m: (arre ye kahan mar gaye) couldnt remember abt naoroji, so said somethng abt phalke working around the turn of the century
(p1 leaves briefly; p2 takes over)
p2: so what courses have you done in maths?
m: maths 1, 2, num sol to odepde, transform calculus
p2: have you done any course in numerical analysis?
m: (here i screwed up a bit. i had forgotten what numerical analysis was and said no. it was only later when he asked me about iteration that i remembered that numerical analysis means these things

) no sir
p2: how do u solve transcendental eqns?
m: by iteration
p2: when did u do that?
m: in maths 2
p2: so u know any iteration techniques?
m: newton raphson
p2: explain
m: wrote the formula and started explaining
p2: tell me physically what it represents
m: drew a graph, explained everythng nicely
p2: so can u derive the formula now?
m: couldnt do (its very simple, a 1-liner in fact, and damn, i couldnt do it thr)
p2: ok fine. now suppose there are 10 toffees in that bowl in front of u (the bowlful of toffees was there right under my nose). imagine there are 2 blue & 8 red toffees. what is the probbility that a blue toffee will be selected?
m: (after some thought) 1/5
p2: sure?
m: (some more thought) yes sir
p3: ok now imagine that before u, 10 people came in and took a toffee each. 8 people took blue & 2 took red, and after each person took a toffee, it was replaced by a toffee of the same colour. would you like to change your answer?
m: (the language wasnt very clear initially, so i asked twice for clarifications before i finally understood what they wanted. but i stuck to my answer) (in the meantime, p1 comes in & is handed the file of certificates by p3)
p2: what courses have u done in probability?
m: only the basic probability in class 11-12, i havnt done any courses in engineering (luckily

)
p1: ok enough of maths, tell me ... something about chocolate
m: told about history of chocolate, that mayans and aztecs were the 1st to consume, and that its actually bitter, sugar has to be added to make it sweet (this was done by europeans) told about some aztec king who drank 50 cups of chocolate a day, how coffee beans were native to central america ...
p3: (interrupting) coffee beans?
m: oh sry , chocolate beans ...
p1: are they called chocolate beans?
m: (stuck in technicalities grrrr) they are called some beans but i cant remember the name
p1: u dont know their name?
m: cant remember
p1: names of any health drinks for children?
m: horlicks, bournvita etc etc
p1: isnt there something produced from cocoa extracts as well?
m: (andhere mein ujala) sir they are called cocoa beans (how did i forget this?)
p1: so how did chocolate get to india?
m: spanish brought it to europe, then british to india
p1: ok fine that will be all. take a toffee.
m: thank u sir (took a blue one

)
my take - essay writing was decent. this was the most relaxed pi which i have given, and possibly the first which i actually enjoyed. did not feel even an iota of stress. though should have done my maths better.
ab lets see wat happens on april 11.... puys please respond on my chances of conversion of a.
