ONLINE CAT : A CLARIFICATION

An article appeared in Business Standard dated February 4, 2008 which gives an impression that a decision has been taken that IIMs will introduce online CAT from CAT 2009. This is totally incorrect. In view of increasing number of candidates IIMs are considering various alternatives for modifying the process of conducting CAT, if necessary. Online testing is one of those alternatives. The proposals are at the preliminary stage of discussion.

puys,
see the target of CAT is to replace GMAT one day. so online has to be an option. now, how they do it is another thing.

i feel the biggest problem for CAT will be to set a paper of equivalent difficulty for all aspirants, while not extinguisihing their question bank. the pattern of examination has to be well thought out.

My strategy would be to take the exam over a period of say-15 to 20 days in different centres around the country in different time-slots. Also, it would be really fantastic if they could provide each person in the same time-slot the same paper all over the country. this would reduce their burden, as then over the 20 days, they would be able to conduct the paper without divulging all questions.

Re: CAT to go online from November 2009 - 02-04-2008, 06:27 AM

Hi All

CAT GOES ONLINE is going to be one of the worst move . We should understand the reason why GMAT and GRE exams are online .

a.Its taken all over the world , which is not possible across using offline method.

b. GMAT and GRE aspirants are few in numbers as compared to the CAT .

c. GMAT Scores are valid till 5 years ( which means less people to sit) , while CAT has no options like this.

d. GRE and GMAT happens round the year , CAT cannot we have only one session and mind you we cannot increase the capacity as of NOW. US universities have THREE sessions .

d. Country like INDIA where the number of candidates would only be increased cannot consider ONLINE . See my calculation below

Total Number of Prometric Centre ( GMAT etc as per their web site) = 8
GRE Test Center - India

300,000 /8 = 37,500 (practically one centre would have more rush than other , but lets take this only) We are not sure if there are other Centres as there can be some more , but these centres are equipped with best connectivity . ( Even though our Banks stop working due to connectivity failure)

Now if we have 365 days in an year we have to do 1000 students per day at each centre .

and Per day you have 8000 test taken . but CAT should happen in not more than one month time as that is the only time they take with current procedure . so in one month they have to analyse 300,000 which means 100,000 candidates per day . ONE Lac People sitting on same server or may be different one . Is it possible risking one of the most prestigious exam .

and If they bring more centres , than also amount of load on the server remain the same .SO CONNECTIVITY IS TWO WAYS NOT JUST CENTRES BUT ALSO THE SERVER WHICH WOULD BE HOSTING THE APPLICATION OF ONLINE EXAMINATION.Can you imagine what happened in SAT ( Symbiosis last year at Agra NIIT Centre) . Power FAILURE . Since it was a simple exam , the aspirants made few noises . But what would happen for aspirants of CAT.

I have gone through some of the feedbacks from Industry , and they have unanimously said one thing , If due to a problem they faced because of scanning of OMR Sheets its because of wrong vendor they have roped in .

For Information I am giving some of the Good OMR Scaner details

OMR Solutions, Complete Solutions for OMR ,process your forms and answer sheet OMR Scanners Manufacturers and Software Developer

DRS: Examinations & Assessment

Дޮ‰ïŽÐƒZƒRƒjƒbƒN

Cases are there where High Volume is done with ease .

ONLINE EXAM WILL KILL COMPLETE TRANSPARENCY . OMR is still tried and tested technology . Will you ever be in position if you give exam and the system crashed/programming bugs and you have No physical Answer sheets .

ONLINE EXAM IS RECOMMENDED WHEN YOU HAVE LOW VOLUME AND NOT HIGH

Rohit

Monster that link u have provided is the response the IIM's gave when the article was printed in newspapers somewhere in Jan-Feb.....i.e. when they were still in the "process" of testing options....
And this is now in Late march that the decision has been taken.....a tender obviously cannot mean trying out options it means a decision has been taken and now its time for implementation!!
:baaa:
Refrain from using mod like words like "refrain"...haha just kidding (I know u'll still go ahead and groan lol)

P.S: The sites will be updated by the IIM's with time I'm sure.....I trust the TIMES man... Front page stuff cant go wrong!

hi Rohit,
it is not necessary that CAT should be also conducted by the same people who conduct the GMAT/GRE? I don't think so.

Well, I got to know that Indian companies like NIIT, CMC, and Aptech went for the bidding as well........so you may never know that how many test centres might come up in near future. As the number of test centres are more a thing based on the need, GMAT takers were not many when compared to any of the other Indian MBA tests, and thats why the numbers are less.

Moreover, I personally feel that online test would be better, and if things are like GMAT than it would be even better - No need to wait for the results, as you can see it immediately after the exams are over. And then the test situations would change for better. In Computer Adaptive Tests you can't skip questions, etc etc

So accept things with a positive frame of mind, change is good, accept it!

thanks & regards

Re: CAT to go online from November 2009 - 17-01-2009, 11:52 AM

Hi,

I have a feeling that CAT will go online from 2009. This will be a move to try and offset the advantage of those who undergo coaching in various institutes in order to prepare for cat. However much the coaching centers try, the first few years of online CAT will be unpredictable and difficulty level difficult to gauge. This very fact may encourage the IIM pple to go for online CAT. It will be interesting to see how IIMs finally come out and inform the test takers about it. Also whether they are able to manage the huge demands of infrastructure the new format will ask for. As for as test takers perspective is concerned, it will be same for everybody hence there is actually no scope for cribbing. Change is inevitable and we must not resist it.

Re: CAT to go online from November 2009 - 27-01-2009, 12:52 AM

First, I would like to clear some apprehensions, which may be present in some other test aspirants' minds too:

1. Is there going to be a change in test pattern( unlike the regular QA/DI/VA pattern ?)

2. Many discussions are on, stating that the online CAT will be synonymous to the GMAT or GRE. If so, would it be Computer Adadptive?

Computer-adaptive testing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

3. In a more focused tone, should I, as a person preparing for the exam, change my preparation in any way because of the change in the pattern of exam administration ?

I give my honest and sincere thanks to all the people who reply to my queries.

All the best

Regards,

harish
