NIBM (All in one thread) - 01-02-2008, 01:19 PM

Hi Puys,
As none of the older thread is active any more and dates for GD-PI for Batch VI (08-09) have already been declared, this is your place to know all about NIBM.
We, seniors, from latest and previous batch will help you in understanding both the institute and banking industry plus will try our level best to solve all sort of queries related to GD/PI, placements, learning opportunities etc. (of course not to forget all time favourite discussion on pay packages data disclosures)
So go ahead and shoot!!

Friendly notice : This thread supersedes all the other existing (almost dead) threads related to NIBM and is going to be the one and only thread for all kinda discussion right upto the batch (VI) formation from which, adorable Juniors can take over or start new thread.

With Regards,
Andy

Thanks Andy Sir,
It was a good initiative from ur side.
the first thing i would like to know is about the Profile and the packages of the placements of the students.
i know its a qs which comes first and should not be a parameter to gauge the course but still it does matters to many aspirants like me.

Also i have seen that NIBM doesnt entertain much to the Engineers is it true ? as they are not from finncial background. I mean is that what exactly they look after in an aspirant who is not having any of the financial experience (like me) but is eager to get into Finance any how.
Kindly help us sir it would be of great help if you follow up with our queries yet to come...

Thanks & Regards,
Saurabh

Re: NIBM (All in one thread) - 01-02-2008, 02:56 PM

ok Saurabh,
Let me start with putting things in right perspective.
You see NIBM is primarily backed by RBI and major PsBs like SBI, BoB,PNB et al. and thus has served as being the prime training centre for bank officer (right upto the level of EDs) for three decades. This is only in 2002 that they restructured one of their very popular two year program for General Managers to a one year course Post Graduate Program in Banking and Finance (PGPBF) and allowed freshers (read non bankers) to join alongside selected bankers to give a pep to PSBs in view of exciting changes happening in Banking Industry. So you can see the standards, knowledge and exposure of industry you'll get being at such a place.
Coming on to placements here (Welcome to National Institute of Bank Management) is the link to placement of our batch and you can see 35 students ending with 172 jobs I too had more than 7 jobs that day....so can testify each and every figure out there. But at the same time let me also make clear that due to subsidies and grants etc. institute bears obligations towards major PSBs and thus placement is not open to corporates like Infy. Wipro, i-flex directly, but with knowledge and Brand NIBM.............Sky is the limit On monetary side 15 outta 35 (non bankers)students from my batch were offered SBI job which is 6L PA now, and even then only 9 took that offer.............so count your own chickens/eggs/omelettes whatever:tellme:..............
And finally on the issue of not giving priority to engineers, just think if this is possible any more after I guess no. of engineers in India coming second only to number of mobile usersBe it any institute buddy, if graduation is requirement you can't disallow engineers and let your seats go empty:razz:, for records we had some 10 plus engineers in a group of 35 non bankers (there were 12 bankers too with engineers among them too).
Ask anyone in Industry and you'll come to know that engineers are doing very fine in finance overall and primarily in banking industry...........
Continue discussion.................All the Best!

Andy

Hey that was put up absolutely in a fantastic way...
most of the queries got resolved.

But my major concern is that even though the packages are less. What eaxctly a pass out from NIBM is upto...i mean what post and all since most of them are PSB's and almost all nationalised banks... they must be offering the one and the same offers with different postings (read cities)...:tellme:
And since NIBM is churning Fanacial managers since last 3 decades by now they have been on few TOP positions.
In other B-Schools(2 yr prgm) the offers made to Finance Grads do vary a lot, like from Wealth Management to Equity Research to what not...

Do NIBM grads also find such positions ?

P.S: It is just a Healthy discussion to know how about NIBM.

Cheers !!!
-Saurabh

I object your honour, and this can be your first lesson in finance too ..........do some back of the envelope calculation and calculate your one year additional earnings plus super defined work experience at middle management role availed at less than 1/4th of the average cost of MBA in India. And btw lets talk take home which is more than 30K (after tax deductions) for more than half the batch.

Well understand there are only 9 months, or 3 back to back trimesters of 3 months each. In addition a close look on subjects (given in prospectus) and their distribution will help you appreciate the focused approach adopted in PGPBF (NIBM). Actually banking is spread into various domains, primarily into credit and investment, and historically all the people from last batches of NIBM have worked more or less at head offices or corporate centers, as for generalbanking banks have sufficient officers and thus they try to use NIBM pass outs for specialist role. I am working as (minor) consultant risk management at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dun_&_Bradstreet

Well its said that almost all executive Directors of major PSBs have been to NIBM atleast once in their life (read my signature...Mecca of banking ), but strictly speaking for freshers who joined NIBM, the first batch passed out in 2004 only but still many (of course based on their sincerity etc.) have reached and managing critical verticals in banking and related industries plus drawing salaries in six figures if it matters as data

Carry on your healthy discussion, but it will be nice if you can put multiple queries as points so that I can save my time on fragmentation.

With Regards,
Andy

Andy sir,
thanks a lot for the info given in previous threads. can you tell me what is the weightage assigned to different parameters in selection process. I mean, what is the weightage assigned to CAT score in subsequent selection process after shortlisting.

To be honest because of the limited intake and thus limited number of candidates for GD/PI am afraid if theres any broad classification available (publicly). Actually let me admit honestly that the whole process tends to revolve around few key faculties (read program coordinator/interview officials) and students are selected mainly on the basis of need, distribution of the batch, suitability of candidate and his/her willingness to contribute best to Indian Banking Industry.
I'll also add that yes there's a room for improvement on certain aspects in this process but having myself cleared some 5 odd interviews for very reputed institutes (ranked 10 to 20, in India) I can vouch for NIBM's being one of the most fair selection process. (it's declaring a clear cut cut-off right from first batch)

With Regards,
Andy
PS (general for all) : In past there's always been at least one selection from the last 5 puys called for GD-PI, so if you are here in stage II, then go ahead, you stand a chance as equal to anybody else of the final call.
