Hey. Thanks for sharing your experience. I think your interview went quite well. you can expect a conversion.

There was a lot of scope for you to give direction to this interview and make them ask questions on what you know than on what you dont know. even if you are asked 2-3 questions that you can't answer, you can immediately introduce a topic of your liking, or give some opinion that you can elaborate on and impress them.

All the Best!

Re: [2008] IIM L GD/PI Experiences - 10-02-2008, 02:26 PM

When - 9th Feb, 10 AM.
Where - Hospitality management Institute, Mumbai.
Why - CAT %ile - 99.89

Profile : B.E in IT from NIT, Durgapur. Currently working in software domain, Work-ex - 1.5 years.

Total people in the group - 6 (4 were absent ).

GD TOPIC : People who work sitting down earn more money than people who work standing up.

With 6 people, it was always going to be tough. I started the discussion, and was satisfied with the start ,said something about people standing up are doing manual labour, at the lower level of an organization, whereas poeple sitting down are poeple at the top of an organization, having more responsibilty. Came in 2 more times in the GD, once with a decent point, and at other time with some crap (I never had much to say). Anyways, it was a decent GD
:satisfie:

PI : hardly lasted 10 minutes

Two panelists, P1 and P2.
I hand over the files to P2, who starts examining it.

P1 : Hello, Rajat, so which subject should I ask you about.
M : (Well, no intro, nothing, direct to the point
:eh: ) Sir, Computer networks.
P1 : Ohhhhhh, networking, anything else.
M : Sir, data structures.
P1 : Others ?
M : Algorithms.
P1 : Thats the same, data structures and algorithms.
M : Sir, C,C++.
P1 : I don't know languages.
M : Operating systems.
P1 : (Laughing) So, what is it that you don't know Rajat ?
M : Theory of computation, automata and Compilers
P1 : Ok, I will start with networking.
M : Yes sir.
P1 : When I type in a web page, how is it accessed.
M : Explained about DNS server............
P1 : What is cache memory ?
M : Explained about RAM and cache, with cache being faster and data is stored temporarily for faster access..............
P1 : Good, but i was asking about cache in networking.
M : Said about pages stored in the local server, like google being most of the times accessed from cache.
P1 : Name five search engines.
M : Google, yahoo, MSN Live, AltaVista, AskJeeves.
P1 : Any more
M : (Thinking
)
P1 : You have named five already, leave it.
M :
P1 : Whats electronic commerce and electronic business.Whats the difference ?
M : e-commerce is about the transactions going digital
P1 : (Cutting me in between) Do you know electronic marketing ?
M : Sir, marketing done through internet.
P1 : P2 , you may ask now.

Now starts the bad part

P2 : Rajat, whats ICT ?
M : No idea :-|
P2 : Do you know the difference between vaious braches of IT, like IT and ICT ?
M : No.
P2 : What are the IT hubs in Europe, set up by govt.
M : No idea :-?
P2 : Which are the IT hubs in India, like NIC, there must be other things by govt ?
M : No idea

P2 : Which is the largest software compnay in India ?
M : TCS
P2 : TCS is more into consulting, which is the largest software firm ?
M : Sir, I am not sure, but if its not TCS, then it must be either Infosys or Wipro.
P2 and P1 : (Both laughing) Thats what we are asking

P2 : Whats IT Act ?
M : :-?
P2 : P1, you only ask him, he knows nothing other than tech.
M : :-|
P1 : Who was the first CM of J&K ?
M : Sheikh Abdullah.
P1 : Was he CM or PM ?

But before i could answer, they both had some discussion on the same : yes, yes, Independent India and sth like that............

P1 : Ok, you may leave now.
M : (Bus ho gaya )Thank you Sir.

It started off so well, but ended on an equally bad note :(

Depends what the profs were looking for, if its tech, then fine, but overall it wasn't a feel good interview.

Looking forward to the IIMK GD/PI on 14th.

All the best to others who have their interviews lined up.

Re: [2008] IIM L GD/PI Experiences - 10-02-2008, 03:52 PM

My IIML adventure...

First.. My profile...
Xth : 89.4%
XIIth : 90.6%
B.Tech : 8.043 (Metallurgy and Materials Engg)
CAT : 99.91 (all 6 calls)

Gd/PI at IIML Noida Campus on feb 8th at 10 am
No. of ppl : 9 (1 absent)

Gd Topic: Science without Religion is lame. Religion without Science is blind.
we had half an hour to write an essay... and after 15 mins i looked around and found that everyone was still on the first page... and realised that it will not be a very content heavy gd.. so relaxed a bit... i started the gd, came in 4-5 times with generally good points... the whole discussion was very smooth, everyone chipped in... towards the end it got repetitive and no one was willing to cut in and speak... overall it was good Gd.. even the moderator called it an enlightening GD (though i thought it was a sarcastic remark... but anyways)

The interview:
P1: slighty older nice guy
P2: slightly younger nice lady
Me: who else!!!

P1: what courses are you doing this sem?
Me: (of all the things, you had to ask this) i listed out the course and emphasized my B.Tech project...
P1: asked a few questions about the project, which i explained satisfactorily...
P2: so, you have done a course on Industrial Sociology? why? what did you learn?
Me: (i already love you lady...) told them about my training in the HR division of NTPC... and my quest for mgmt knowledge... listed the topics studied in Industrial Sociology ( i had an A+ in the course)...
P2: (seemed satisfied with my answer) gave me a case about me being the team leader and one employee not working... how to deal with this situation..
Me: gave her globe gyan about getting to the root of the problem, talking it out, giving her a short holiday to sort out the problems...
P2: An area you need to improve on...
Me: gave her an prepared answer about the need to dev. people skills...
P1: how to do that?
Me: another prepared answer.. about trying to have conversations in my mind.. preparing for the different situations.. had a small discussion about the GD... and had P1 interrupt me with something about preparing for all the bad things that might happen...(P2 laughed at this, even P1 was laughing and i joined in... a happy IIML family.. )
P2: why trekking as hobby? what mgmt you learn from that?
Me: another prepared answer.. about planning and motivation.. (the lady was shaking her head so vigorously that i kept on going with the answer.. said something about satisfaction)
P1: is 8.04 satisfying?
Me: my rank is 6 in the dept. (seemed satisfied)
P1: a few questions about why i got C+ in one of the courses?
Me: gave what seemed to me a satisfactory answer..
P2: one last question... you english marks are low in the boards (85 and 75) and you say you are the editor of a student magazine...
Me: told her about improving and working hard to improve...and doing a good job at it.. as demonstrated by my editing work...

Overall it was a feel good kinda interview... they were laughing at times, and i was too...did not try to stress on my answers.. accepted my answers well... only restricted themselves to my strengths... did not ask uncomfortable questions like Why MBA? why MBA after IIT?
Anyways.. i don't care if i get selected or not... i just want all my interviews to be this cool... (touch wood......)

Re: [2008] IIM L GD/PI Experiences - 10-02-2008, 05:37 PM

I had my L interview today...very chill one....no tensions whatsoever...calm GD, calm panel calm interview.....an anticlimax of sorts given the hype of the mocks.....

Here go the details:

Acads:
X : 92%
XII : 95%
Undergrad Major - GPA/%age: 9.1 CG

Work-Ex: 1.5 yrs
NIL/Sector - Number of Years

CAT %ile:
DI 99
Quant 87
Verbal 92
Aggregate 98.5

GD:
Topic: Winning is important, no matter at what cost.
Number of Ppl present : 6 (3 absent)
Time: 10.00AM
Brief Snapshot of Discussion:

Were first asked to write a four page essay on the topic.

Discussion was very calm as I said earlier. A good number of points were made and allowed to be made. Discussed various examples. Everyone chipped in at least twice. Couldnt conclude though. weren't asked to either.

Didn't notice what the panel were doing. Probably they slept off!!

PI:

Panel Members Intro: 2 guys, mite be in their late 40s..

Questions: guess one of the panelists was from my hometown, so were generally discussing about localities, places of visit etc etc for first 5 minutes. Only then the actual interview started. All of us were asked what were the areas that we can be questioned upon..Chose project management and indian economy as I was pretty confident about these areas...

Was asked what was PERT/CPM and the difference between the two.Thats it for the Proj Mgmt part of it.( The panelist says, you can take over from now!! after just 3 qns)

Then was quizzed about GDP/GNP,figures for the current year, Current account Convertibility, forex reserves utilisation.

No why MBA,strength/weakness, and all the other much hyped questions.

Lasted for about 15-20 minutes, but a big chunk was spent in discussing localities of my hometown!

DI: 99.93
VA: 99.85
OA: 99.99

Topic: When you start feeling you are siding with the majority, its time for you to reform
Centre: IIM L Noida Campus
Essay: spelled out majority as majourity in the whole essay
neways.. a decent essay with 3 different examples and also wrote about having a framework to question the decisions. my rating: 7/10(could have been 9 :( )

GD: Was not that good. Came in 3-4 times but with no one interested to listen. Almost the same points being mentioned. One of the member started with something like "As i am a computer engineer from one of the best engineering colleges of India...blah blah blah"... was stunned to hear him talk.. it almost felt he was trying to answer "tell me about yourself and why shoud we take you".. neways.. not much fish market ... my rating : 5/10

PI: Old lady (P1), Middle aged lady(P2), Your's truly(S)

P2: So tell us about your job (what??? there goes my prep of why mba down the drain)
s: Blah blah... mentioned web application and ERP (poocho poocho)
P1: you got promoted so what is the difference in your responsibilities?
S: (Not again)... told that no difference... 2 min discussion on it
P1: When did you start feeling that you need to do MBA?
S: told about a year back...(cutting me short)
P1: This is your first attempt?
S: no its 3rd.
P2: Then why did you give it before? peer pressure?
S: No family pressure.. then explained that family wanted me to become doctor and stuff...
P2: So you wanted to prove yourself...
S: In a way.. yes.
Then had a discussion about time investement in medical field and engineering(8 yrs compared to 4 in engineering)
P2: you work in Bangalore? then why the centre is delhi?
S: explained that due to some work related goof up i am stuck with Delhi as center
P1: Ok so what happened in the last 2 attempts?
S: 2005.. converted IMT but did not join as wanted to study from IIM's only
2006.. Pathetic percentile so no calls
2007.. "got calls"
P2: What all calls did you get this time?
S: All of them
P2: What's your percentile?
S: (With a straight face)99.99
P1, P2 burst into smiles....
P2: It cannot get better than this
S: yes maam it cannot get better than this
P1: What changed in the last 2 years? how did you manage good percentile this year?
S: Patience... then a small discussion on it
P1: Ok, so since you got multiple calls, where will you rate L among them?
S: (Aww comeon.. can you not ask me something else?).(with a big smile).. maam its a dream come true and frankly speaking i have no idea where i can rate L among others.. to me they are almost the same.
P2: Ok so which college will you fill in case of multiple converts?
S: (are we not done here??).. (again smiling).. i have no idea maam.. perhaps the one that comes first
P1: The one that comes first?? but that is not how decisions are made.. this is illogical..
S: (Me and my big mouth) Maam i will be so happy that there is a very good chance that i will make such an illogical decision..
P2: Which exam did you give to get into your engineering college?
S: explained... and then had a small discussion on my college
P1: Ok so what kind of reading do you do?
S: Anything that i can lay my hands on
P1: Last book?
S: Witch of portobello.. currently reading "grapes of wratih"
P1: Author?
S: (thinking) srry i cannot recall it (Stupid me... the only question that i did not know)
P1: What do you like about paolo?
S: silverlining in everything.. but am very much critical about his way of presenting things
then again a small discussion on it
P1: So you think it makes people pessimistic?
S: (Confused).. maam i said he looks out for the silverlining so i guess it makes people more optimistic than pessimistic.
P2: what did you learn out of that book?
S: nothing as i was reading only for reading paolo's style of writing..(one question that i should have elaborated upon)
P2: What do you do in free time?
S: i discuss things with my friends.. on any topic..
P1: Rate yourself in the GD
S: 5/10
P2: why not 2 or why not 8?
S: Spoke moderatly
P1: Then how come you are able to discuss things with your friends?
S: 2 reasons.. 1. I am more comfortable with them and 2. they are willing to listen when others are speaking (the only questiion where i think i should have been more diplomatic)
P2: So you were not that comfortable with them?
S: no maam i wasn't
P2: Ok we are done.. you may leave..
S: Ty

neways.. Lucknow is done.. next stop Khozikode on 22nd

After me every member of the group had a look at the topic chit, which somehow made me feel a bit better.

GD was good a couple of times two people spoke simultaneously. We were stopped after around 12 mins.

is there no essay writing????

The GD topic was announced first.. we had to write an essay... the confusion arose while I was writing the essay... although logically it had to be lame since the last word was blind... but I decided not to take a chance.
